We stayed at the Sunset Plaza from 1-8 June. Staff was excellent, property was excellent, well maintained and very quiet (good for me as I like sitting by the pool reading and drinking margaritas).

I was worried about the food and drinks given some comments but I found it to be very good. If a drink was too weak we just would ask for additional shot and servers took care of us. What the resort/ Luciano Menu calls a Filet Mignon is most definitely not a Filet Mignon; it was very tasty however and probably a ribeye based on looks, fat content and tenderness. There was a foul odor detectable in our bathroom (may have been from the window or ventilation system). I suspect it was the ventilation system because as long as it was on we couldn't tell. Concierge was trying to get us to sign on the dotted line for excursions but the 5 year old didn't have the kind of attention span to bring on 6 or 8 hour trips; don't begrudge her the hard selling tactics it is her job after all but now I know better.

Breakfast sandwich was delicious but pack your insulin.

We went on an all inclusive package, it was worth it given what we paid for and the quality off site. Gratuity is not included but I recommend it as the staff works hard and have excellent attitudes.

Last 2 nights Thurs and Fri, there was a convention of some sort and the pool had a DJ, kids liked the dance music and they didn't play into the wee hours so it was fun.

Kids loved the pool, kids zone and got to release newly hatched turtles. Nearby Soriana (grocery store) is 4 blocks to keep fridge stocked. If you are put off by desparate street and beach vendors Mexico is not the place for you, a polite "Gracias, no" usually does the trick.

Note: Rainy season starts in Puerto Vallarta in June, if you like sunshine Fall is best.

Room Tip: Higher floor is quieter so I am told.

Our family of 5 (couple in 40's, son age 15 and grandparents in 60's) recently returned from our stay at Sunset Plaza. This was our 7th trip to PV. We have previously stayed at Secrets, Villa Premiere (2x), Dreams, Melia and Golden Crown Paradise. Sunset Plaza is hands-down the best of all of these resorts!
We checked in around 1pm, we had booked 2 suites, all-inclusive. We were greeted with cold towels and mimosas. When we were checking in we asked for rooms on the same floor. We were accomodated and were given rooms 812 & 814. The check-in was swift and staff were knowlegable. We were shown to our rooms by Ivan. He went over every aspect of the room and our luggage arrived while he was still explaining everything.
The rooms are gorgeous! They are absolutely immaculate, not a speck of dust, no tears in furniture, etc. The balcony was huge! The pictures on the website don't do it justice!
Housekeeping did turndown around 8pm each night and cleaned around 11am each morning.
Some of the best lunch dishes were the shrimp campachena (it was so good I had it every day), steak sandwich, mediterranean salad with grilled chicken (on the poolside menu). If you want something not on the menu then ask and they will do whatever they can to accomodate! Drinks were good, loved the mojitos and margaritas. If you want extra alcohol then ask for a double. The only beer available is Modelo and Negro Modelo on tap. The service in the restaurants and bars was always excellent. The best server during our stay was Jose'. We cannot say enough good things about him. He did everything possible to make our meals memorable.
We tipped throughout our stay for all meals, occasionally for cocktails, housekeeping, butler, valets, etc. I hate to say it but I really didn't see very many other people tipping even though the Mexican people make such poor wages.
The pools are very clean and we never had a problem finding 5 seats together. The cabanas in the adult pool are very nice, poolwater was just the right temperature. Poolside service was always prompt. Towels are well-stocked and there is no need for "towel cards".
We ordered room service 4 times. It always arrived within 15 min. Only one time it was missing an order of bacon and the server promptly brought it back up to our room.
We really enjoyed dinner at the Italian restaurant. The spaghetti bolognese, bruschetta with olive tempenade and minestrone soup were excellent. My 15-yr old son had cheese pizza and said it was the best pizza he's ever had (the pizza was much better in the Italian restaurant than from room service or poolside). You must try the Mexican coffee, it's a neat show and tip your servers!!
Some of our favorite breakfast foods were the steak/egg burrito, omelettes and french toast. The OJ was fresh-squeezed. The shortrib tacos and quesadillas were our favorite dinner choices.
I had a Hawaiian massage on the pier on the ocean and it was one of the best massages I've ever had! The prices weren't out of line at all, about what I pay here in the U.S. They had a special pkg, free 25 min facial with the purchase of an 80 min massage. It was outstanding! Ask for Elda, she does an excellent job!
This is a quiet resort/spa. If you want someplace livelier then don't stay at a spa resort.
Overall we had a fantastic stay. There are just a few things that would make it even better.
-The hotel next door is very loud until about 10pm, so if you go to bed early it may affect your sleep quality until it quiets down
-They only give you 2 pkts of coffee in your room and don't replinish it. It would be nice to have 1 pkt a day.
-Randy in the lobby bar is awesome! He's always smiling and makes a good drink. However, the music in the lobby bar is very loud. It's club/tech music so you have to sit outside if you want to visit. It's not a dance club so this doesn't make much sense.
-There needs to be a small giftshop for items such as lipbalm, gum, magazines, etc.
-It would be nice to have some bottled beer in the lobby bar
We will most definitely stay at this resort again. In Dec we stayed at Secrets, the rooms there are nice but the Secrets/Dreams resorts food is about a D+ overall and service is a C-. We love the Villa Premiere but the rooms need a major makeover. Melia has a lot of locals and the Golden Crown is poorly maintained and dirty with a very low-class crowd (but good food).
We travel extensively from Mexico to the Caribbean to Hawaii to Central American. Sunset Plaza stands out as one of our favorite resorts!
Cudos to the staff for making this such an enjoyable place to vacation! We will be back soon!

Room Tip: All of the rooms have sweeping ocean views. You don't have to pay extra for an awesome view lik...

Sunset Plaza was just as nice as other reviewers depicted it to be. When we arrived to check in, we were greeted with champagne, cold washcloths, and a complimentary aromatherapy chair massage. Our room was beautiful and faced the beach. It was equipped with modern amenities. We opted for the European plan, as neither of us are much into all-inclusive plans, but the pool area was very nice with plenty of places to lounge. The infinity pool was pretty cool, but the best part is that they have a private, adults only pool and 3 separate hot tubs with awesome views. The only downside to their pool area was that there was not much shade once the sun was at it's highest.

Everyone and everything about Sunset Plaza is wonderful. The food is great at all three restaurants. We highly recommend the exclusive quiet dinner for two out on the jetty (where massages are during the day). It was the most romantic unforgettable dinner we have ever had the opportunity to experience. Not to mention the ambiance at sunset made the dinner even more complete. The butlers, bartenders, maids, turn down maids and concierge (hope I didn't forget anyone) are all absolutely fabulous. Now that we are home I really miss our butlers. Love how the butlers would even shop for us when we needed items whether it was for our refrigerator or if it was batteries for the camera. Take advantage of the morning deep stretch class it will start your day out with a smile. My husband and I did the tandem massages out on the jetty in the morning and everything about them was extraordinary. I would say that there is not anything negative to say about Sunset Plaza. We can't wait to go back. It was by far our best vacation ever!

Room Tip: Love the 1 bedroom as it has 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. I find it a must to have a fridge. The groce...

Everything about our stay was amazing. Me and my best friend checked in a couple of days after our two other friends. They already knew our friends very well by the time we got there. The service was excellent. Always smiling and very helpful. The food was amazing. The rooms were so clean and the turn down service with linen spray was a nice touch. Everything we needed was provided for and more. Nice, small, with a boutique feel. The entertainment guy hooked us up with a private tour operator from the beach. It was my third trip to PV and my best friends fifth trip. Both our friends were here for the first time. Big name tours are nice and all, but we wanted something more personal and intimate. We paid 1200 pesos each (times four people) for an 8 hour private boat charter with two snorkelling stops and a stop in Yelapa. It was amazing! Way nicer in terms of our own private time than the big name companies. We stopped off at a secluded beach and we were the ONLY people there. Very nice. Not rushed. No lineups for snorkels. Yelapa was pretty cool, too. I highly recommend the private tour route and would do it again without hesitation. Just ask the entertainment guide to recommend a reputable person.

Las Palmas is right next door. If you want all-day pool party action, then go there. Seriously they partied all day and late into the night. Our resort all but shuts down at 10pm. Nice to come home to after going out dancing elsewhere. Also nice to relax to.

Our stay at Sunset Plaza was awesome and amazing. Can't wait to return!
