“Beautiful Resort! Great memories!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

So many good things to say about the Sunset Plaza. Upon arrival we were offered a cold glass of sparkling wine and I had a 5 min massage. We travelled with our 8 and 11 year old daughters and our biggest concerns were put to rest immediately. The beach was definitely big enough especially when we are the only ones out there. I was also worried that there would not be enough to do for the kids but they still enjoyed visiting the Kids Club for the 10:00 craft time, and my older daughter enjoyed playing beach volleyball. I had a 5 min massage almost daily, and in the early afternoon they offered each guest an ice cold cloth scented with anise. These little things push it above 4 star. Anyone who has stayed at a PV 4 star would understand why this resort is a 5.
The room was awesome and having a 2nd bathroom when there are 4 people is very rare. The master bathroom was very well appointed with a huge shower and separte jacuzzi. The bed was super comfortable - the best bed we have ever encountered in all of Mexico. We did not use the kitchen although it is stocked with wine glasses, pots and pans, dishes. No salt or pepper though - you would need to bring/buy everything.
The tide came up pretty good a couple of mornings but by afternoon there was plenty of room. It certainly made for some interesting wave watching.
Lots of talk on Trip Advisor about the nightlife. We had asked at the front desk about when would it be Mexican night and Javier himself said there is no Mexican night, only Mexican menu. So to our surprise, we stumbled upon a couple of nights where there were amazing Mayan tribal dancers and a 5 piece mariachi that we thought was very good. We also enjoyed the trio in the lounge a couple of nights. Some folks have written in to say the lounge was sad and boring, but I would disagree. Finding a quiet lounge and a trio/quartet is right up our alley and so listening to 'Girl from Impanema' while sipping a cold sparkling wine suited us just fine - and there were 20 other people in the lounge that night as well. They even open the kids club at 9 pm so parents can enjoy the evening and not be locked in the room. I suggested to the staff that a poster in the elevator featuring tonights entertainment would be a great idea, or you would have to ask daily. I can see the effort they are making with the night life and I would personally enjoy more of that if only I knew about it.
Food and bar was quite good, and they were very good to the children. They enjoyed chocolate icecream and banana smoothies at the swim up bar. The breakfasts were awesome, truly wonderful. The kids loved their french toast and pancakes and we liked the Northern Burrito. If you want some kick for breakast order the Salsa Rojo - very authentic. Lots of people drinking 'green juice' which is cactus, pineapple andd celery. I enjoyed Mojito's and sangria most days.
We will go back, we have great memories and I am very happy to report this resort will not dissappoint!

Room Tip: We were on the 11th floor and we could see from one end of PV to the other. If you were 8th floor o...

Every one there was so happy to help in any way - they were cheerful at all times.
I keep seeing 'not a 5 star'. Well it is a solid American 4 star. We thought the food was wonderful and any thing we asked for was delivered.
The 'reservation' restaurant (take a sweater) had was nice for dinner but the weekend breakfast buffets were the best. Generally all food was made to order (my preference) almost anytime & anyplace
Beautiful (& safe) rooms, grounds, lobby, pools, staff. Rooms were kept so clean & smelled so good.
A relaxing quiet place to be.

We stayed at the Sunset from Feb 4th-9th 2013. We met 2 other couple there that had arrived 2 days before us, they conned Manuel (one of the awesome butlers) into greeting us with a tequila shot and a donut (my boyfriend is a cop) instead of the usual drinks, it was quite hilarious. The manager gave us complimentary massages right after we arrived and the place was beautiful to top it all off. We were brought to our room and showed around and everything was clean and gorgeous! Everything about our room was perfect, the bed, the shower, the view.....everything! We lounged by the pool on most days, which was awesome, the pools are clean and spacious and not crowded by any means, the servers around the pool were very attentive, our favorites were Jorge and Salvador, they were great, always making sure that our drinks were full and our bellies were never empty.
We were able to watch the whales from our balconies and the sunsets were beautiful every evening. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this place. The food was good and the service was great. We are getting ready to book our trip for next year and we plan to stay here again and for 10 days this time!! I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking to travel to Puerto Vallarta!!

The hotel is not fancy or large. It has an intimate feeling. The rooms are very nice and clean. The view of the ocean and pool area from the room is wonderful. The staff is wonderful, smiling, and helpful.

We didn't book all inclusive because I like to sample local food, but we did eat some meals there. They were local cuisine and excellent. All of the drinks were good. Possibly one of the best margaritas around.

The bus is half a block away and downtown and the Malecon a short ride. Also easy access via the bus to Bucerias, Sayulita, the marinas and the airport.

If you want to relax, this is the place.

Ive been to a few all inclusives in Mexico and this was by far the worst. I dont understand for the life of my why this hotel is #3 in tripadvisor. I booked this hotel because of that fact and now i am forever very wary of tripadvisor rankings- I read all the reviews instead.
There is absolutely no atmosphere. They had a free 5min massage and some drink demonstration. Thats it. If you want a little fun on your holiday- this is not the place. Theres nothing to do, nobody to watch, no great drinks, no nice beach. NADA!
The food was extremely limited in range and the mini mart and italian restaurant were never open- only the bar/area near the pool. The same food, people, tables every day for a week is very boring. The drinks were the worst- and thats saying a lot because many all inclusives dont always give you the best quality.
The lobby- which resembles an office with little desks and computers- is full of people asking you questions every time you walk past, avoid them by using the "wet" entrance/exit on the left hand side of the lobby. When we got a taxi to the airport the guy was asking "have you checked out?" "What room?" "Where are you going now?" But not in a friendly way, in a forceful very invasive sort of tone.
The only good thing about the hotel is you get a little balcony with a table- nice to enjoy the night sky. And the rooms were clean and comfortable. Wifi was spotty. And the adults pool has day beds and a nice secluded feeling- it felt good to pretend to be in another hotel from there!
Honestly the main area of Puerto Vallarta is not that pretty and you cant swim- There are many more beautiful beaches in Mexico. Or if you really want to try out PV, head north for the better beaches. Im not going back there- the hotel or the city.

Thanks TripAdvisor reviewers for helping us to choose this exceptional resort. We were at a bit of a loss as to which hotel to choose and now have a new favorite not just in Puerto Vallarta but in Mexico. The service was exemplary starting with the butler-led introduction to our enormous one bedroom suite. OK we lucked out by being placed on the 15th floor. The view was an amazing span of Banderes Bay from downtown PV to north of the marina.
The room was fantastic: huge, new and modern decor, well-appointed with 2 flat screens, DVD player, iPod dock, two very large modern baths, sofa bed that was a foam mattress instead of a coily-springy thing, pillow choices, scent-menu, gigantic balcony.
Resort: just the right size with some cool activities like cooking display and bartending, without the annoying calls of water aerobics. Three well designed interconnecting and attractive pools in the main area (with a nice swimup option the kids can enjoy), plus a private adults area with privacy hedges and comfortable covered chaise beds.
Beach: This was my biggest reservation before coming worried that we would regret having such a small beachfront. As it turned out it was completely sufficient and fine. My 8-year old twins went wave riding every afternoon. In the am, the water was very calm and swimmable, in the pm it was wavy and fun for the kids. The beach was sandy and clean, unlike some of the other resorts like the Sheraton which is very rocky.)
Resort choice: Location was just close enough to downtown that we could walk on the beach 40 min to the Malecon, a very nice walk (but bring sandals since there is a rocky section after the Sheraton
Walking past the other resorts I can confidently say that the only other resort that I would have possibly chosen with this vicinity to downtown is Now Amber, which has a nice span of beach. But that resort was much bigger and turned us off by the size and activity level. The Sheraton looks downright Eastern European from the beachside (dingy walls with old-looking curtain and rocky beach--we didn't see the rooms but were happy to not stay there)
Value: My husband thought we had paid $250-$300/night given the room & amenities and thought that would have been a good value, but we paid 1/2 of that and felt like we got an amazing deal
Weather: perfect every day (Ok the resort didn't control this or the sunsets, but they were both perfect)
Kids Club: A great value at Pesos 150/day (about $13 per child). We would swim with the kids in the am and twice brought them to kids club for some chill time with movies & video games which we relaxed at the pool or went for a walk downtown.
Food & drinks: drinks were amazing, good value and very well made. Only drink complaint was the complete lack of wine in the Italian Restaurant (3 Chilean options that were downright bad. Not a surprise in Mexico, but if you have an Italian Restaurant good wine should be available). The food was good, but didn't vary much. We chose not to do all-inclusive and were happy to go outside for dinner. The in-room dining is the other room for improvement at this otherwise fantastic resort. We had breakfast twice in the room and the room service version was much less appetizing than if we had ordered in the restaurant.
We will definitely be back to our new favorite resort! I'm so happy this resort has gotten such good reviews. It certainly deserves it.

This was a very fun place to stay. Great view of the ocean from your room and the pool and dining areas. The all-inclusive package was great to enjoy the different food choices whenever you liked, and plenty of frozen drinks to enjoy pool-side, or even at the swim up bar. Daily activities like kayaking offered for free, and other activities are available to purchase from peoples on the beach. Close enough to walk to downtown, or you can take a cheap bus ride.
