“Enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Just returned from this hotel, after a 1 week stay. This is a smaller, newer property that has its focus on great food and service. Its beach is a very small area which is the case with most of the hotels in the hotel zone, not great for swimming or beach activities. There is not alot of activities or entertainment supplied as with larger properties, but there is a group of 3 that play in the lounge a few hours (8-11) Wed, Thurs Fri , only, I believe, that are enjoyable. Go off the resort for your nightlife fun. We had a 1 room suite 11 th floor, more of a condo really, with great view from a large balcony. Fully equiped kitchen, dining and living room. Big modern washrooms, walk in closet. Very comfortable bed. A little over the top for a all inclusive stay, but beautiful. Buy a bag of coffee and filters from oxxo of Sorianos to make use of the coffee machine and save charges for daily supplied coffee. If you want a relaxing, quieter resort with a great room and food this is a great hotel. No buffets, restaurant service only, all day long. Food is alway fresh and hot. (We did'nt find the menus to be too limiting or repetative for a week stay as some other reviewers stated) Smokers be aware that thier is no smoking on balconies or most of the property, say for 2 small areas. (not in bar or pool areas) We didnt try the spa or hear any other guest comments on it.

My wife and I plus twin 21 year old sons had a great time. Having a capacity of 200 guests but plenty of staff gave us the attention necessary to qualify for a 5 STAR rating. The layout of the resort is cozy and clever. The pools offer different ambiances and one is restricted to ADULTS ONLY. The SWIM UP BAR is HUGE, and service friendly and prompt. The small area of private beach has several CANOPY BEDS that sit only 30 FEET from waters edge. The food is adequate, not great. The rooms are a decent size and the maid service is excellent. Be careful not to stay on the NORTH end of the building on 1 - 7 floors, the motor/fan on top of building below is NOISY, really muffles sound of ocean waves. We stayed on 10th floor . . . GREAT!
We will stay again.

Room Tip: Stay on 8th floor or higher, better view and quieter.

I have visited Mexico on 6 or 7 occasions, always staying in all-inclusives. This one was head and shoulders above the rest. It is smaller than most such resorts and hence doesn't have some of the features such as night-time shows etc. but that is offset by the quality and value of the resort. The rooms are spatious and clean. The food was very good (although served in a restaurant rather than Buffet style). Most of all, the staff was the most pleasant and accomodating of any all-inclusive resort I've ever visited including ones in Jamaica, Cuba and Mexico. My wife became ill, for example and needed some Tylenol. Our butler went off the grounds to a pharmacy and brought back the medicine. Because it is smaller than most resorts we really were able to become acquainted with the staff and I was repeatedly asked how she was doing by various staff. The morale was also very high and you got the feeling that the staff really enjoyed what they were doing and loved their jobs. It's also worth mentioning that you're only a 10 minute ($4.50) cab ride from downtown Peurto Vallarta so going in and out of town is a breeze.

This is definitely a place I would return to.

Room Tip: All the rooms have great ocean views. If you are height sensitive you might ask for one on a lower...

Our group ages 22 - 49 enjoyed an excellent stay here over Christmas. The rooms are spotless, the grounds are beautiful, the pools and hot tubs are clean and heated and we had great poolside service. The staff works very hard to look after your every need - very accommodating and very friendly - management, reception, spa, restaurant, bar, butler, maintenance and housekeeping - everyone! Sunset is a nice relaxed atmosphere with a boutique type vibe. It is a smaller hotel and therefore never seemed busy although they were fully booked. We have only praise for this place and would definitely recommend.

We just returned from a 7 day holiday at the Sunset Plaza, were there from Dec 29-Jan 5 so over New Years. Despite the weather not cooperating, I have so many excellent things to say about this resort. My family have been travelling to Mexico almost every year for the past 15, and we mostly stay in All-inclusives, and have been partial to Neuvo Vallarta. We decided to try staying in PV this trip for a change. Location is good, about a 10-15 min ride to the Airport and about the same distance to the Malecon. NEVER before have i stayed in a Mexican hotel where the service was so good! I especially liked that the resort is small so you got to know the servers, bartenders and the concierge/butlers. We had excellent service from almost everyone in this entire place, they really made the trip special. It was my step father's bday on NY Eve and despite all the preparations that the resort staff were doing for the gala evening, our Butler Juan went into town and bought for us a special birthday cake and also did another trip into town for some tylenol when my mom wasnt feeling great with a cold. The Food here was also fantastic, a great selection of seafood and steaks and they were very accomodating to our kids who didnt care too much for fancy food and so they were offered pasta, chicken, burgers or pizza. The fine- dining restaurant Luciano could use a little work though, the atmosphere is pretty dark and empty and the food wasnt as good as the main restaurant (my only complaint about the food). Pool service was excellent, those guys really worked hard! The Bar service was fantastic too, great quality alcohol and they weren't shy with the strength of the drinks. Ulysses was our favourite bartender, he always had a smile on his face. Our room was better than any I have stayed at before in Mexico, including a 5 star in Playa and Cancun. Every room has an ocean view-we were up on the 15th floor so the views were spectacular. There was noise from the neighbouring hotel, but it was mostly shut down at a reasonable time. There isn't a ton of night life at this hotel, they have live music playing in the lobby bar but no shows, they are really trying to stress a peaceful, relaxing environment. There are activities during the day, like cooking classes, bartending classes, yoga, dart tournaments, but the activity guys are not pushy, ...it's there if you want it. The Beach here is small but good for boogie boarding and the vendors don't bug too much. We did kayaking from the resort and banana boating which the kids loved. Its not very often that I would go back to the same resort over again, but this one I definetly would. There were 9 of us travelling together and it was truly an excellent trip at a fantastic resort.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are pretty good although the lower ones seem to get more noise from neighbouri...

Just returned from Sunset . the resort couldnt of been better. when we checked in, we spoke with the manager "xavier" who introduced himself to us upon our arrival. Juan was very helpful as well as the rest of the staff. Rooms were great just couldnt praise it enough.

Room Tip: if your traveling with children, ask for a suite with joining room.

We stayed here from December 22 - December 29. This was our first time staying at an all-inclusive and it was my first time in Mexico. If I had to do this vacation all over again, I would stay here for no more than 4 days and then move on to a different resort. This is not to say that this place is bad but, like the other reviewers, I think that the lack of variety causes it to get real boring real fast. Additionally, little things add up to making a less than exceptional experience. Let's start with the good things, though:

- Eduardo is great! He works at the pool bar and remembered everything we ordered the first day and every day after that, as soon as he saw us he would deliver our first round of drinks without us even asking. He is AWESOME!

- The couple who works at the lobby bar is really nice. They make great drinks and they are fast and friendly.

- Housekeeping does a good job. You never know when they will be there but when they do show up, they do a thorough job.

- A/C works well and there is a good ceiling fan in the room. Keeps everything nice and cool for sleeping and relaxing.

- Good selection of premium liquors - better than expected for an all-inclusive. They do have a handful of liquors that cost extra for the all-inclusive package but they make sure to let you know that.

The following is list of things that didn't go so well for us:

- Get there early to get a chair by the pool or you don’t get one. There are many chair "poachers" who go down early and put towels on the chairs and if you get down there after 9am, you are out of luck.

- There were lots of kids. This wasn't a huge issue and certainly no fault of the resort but just something to be aware of.

- Wifi is not good. This is not a deal breaker and we anticipated this in advance but just beware.

- Some of the alcohols/food are not included in the all-inclusive. The food items that are not included are mostly at Luciano and don't waste your money to "upgrade". We did one night and the cut of meat was no better than what's included for free.

- Food gets boring after a few days. They have the same 25 ingredients and try to rearrange as best they can but it's all pretty much the same thing every day.

- Angel (who works at the front desk is rude and condescending. I wanted to find out about adding a night to our stay due to a change with our plane tickets and when I asked him about it, he didn't appear to care at all and just said they were booked through February. He did no checking to see if there was any room available, he just said to check back later. All three times I had to interact with him, he was constantly interrupting me by taking calls on the phone, over the radio and even talking with other guests as I was talking. This was exceptionally frustrating.

- The butler service that they advertise on their website seems to be non-existent. We never saw our butler after the first hour of our arrival. We never got a pillow menu or a scent menu for our room. This wasn't too much of a worry for us but, in my opinion, if they advertise it as a service, they should adhere to their promises. The only big disappointed related to the butler service was that the resort had a Christmas Eve dinner that we found out about only by overhearing other guests. I inquired with the manager ad he said they were completely booked and that our butler should have told us about it. We were disappointed to have been left out of the festivities but it worked out for the best when, upon the manager's recommendation, we had dinner at The Vista Grill (in old town PV) instead.

- Luciano, the Italian restaurant is mediocre. Nothing special but nothing bad, either. Just don't expect anything spectacular.

- Towels smell kind of bad and they are hard and scratchy

Like other guests who stayed during this time, we had a terrible, horrible stomach flu. This was not your typical travelers tummy troubles - this was full-on fever, non-stop vomiting, diarrhea and general malaise. We did not leave our room for two days which makes me a little resentful of the all-inclusive cost as we didn't get to use it at all during the time of our illness (which altogether lasted about four and a half days). We did note that this was probably some sort of food-borne illness as we never once observed hand washing by people who prepared or delivered food. From the other reviews, it sounds like this happens frequently. I would think they would be more prepared for this by sending housekeeping right away to restock towels and empty trash and also send someone to deliver plenty of bottled water. We were told they would do this but, after four or five hours, we ended up grabbing towels off the maid's cart and grabbing bottled waters from the downstairs bar.

Again, I would probably return to this resort but I would not stay any longer than four days and I would have lower expectations in regard to the butler service. Overall, we thought the service was good and the people were friendly. The pools were nice and we enjoyed our time there for the most part. Happy travels!

Room Tip: If you want to upgrade to a junior suite, I would recommend calling and talking with someone rather...
