I love to cook, and have enjoyed many PV restaurants on past trips, but this time I booked Liana as a personal caterer and couldn't be happier with my day. She refers to herself as a "Mama-style chef", so the atmosphere was easy and friendly.
Liana met me at our condo, and took me to an outdoor Mexican market, where we shopped for meat and produce, and poor Liana answered every question I had about the variety of foods that were new to me... I was prepared to think outside the box of Canadian and American grocery stores, which was certainly necessary, and I found the shopping an experience I won't forget. Best of all, I won't hesitate to shop there again on my own - there were next to no ex-pats in the market, and the vendors were totally gracious.
Back at our condo, Liana cooked several dishes including those that I had specifically asked to learn - Chillies Relanos and Tortilla Soup. (A bonus was Hibiscus Tea that we've been mixing into our own iced tea - Who knew?) She certainly knows her way around the kitchen, and was very open to showing me the tricks behind the ingredients I didn't know much about, especially the varieties of peppers. We not only had a great late lunch when the meal was ready, but I learned enough to make these items again and perhaps even stretch out a little on my own.
Liana was a great teacher, and was also a lot of fun - I really enjoyed my day with her. It may not the Mexican experience of parasailing and booze cruises they sell on the beach, and I realize it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I loved the experience of new recipes and interacting at the local market.
Nuts and Bolts: I paid for all the groceries (very inexpensive local prices) and paid Liana a flat hourly rate. Liana drove from our condo and back, and did all the dishes while we ate. We had leftovers for days!
