I went to this hotel with my girlfriend for the July 4th weekend to celebrate her birthday, and we had a very relaxing time. We were looking for a mid-priced all-inclusive hotel where she could get pampered, and I could just laze around the pool.
The hotel is conveniently located in the Marina area, about five minutes to the airport, and is close to the shops and restaurants in the Marina itself. There are several other hotels in the area. It’s about a 20-minute taxi or bus ride to the downtown area (which is definitely worth a visit). The hotel is very family-oriented, so if you are bothered by lots of kids running around, this is probably not the place for you. We don’t have kids but didn’t mind them at the hotel; there were a lot of activities for them so they were entertained and not causing trouble. The hotel is not brand-new, but it’s well-maintained, especially the gardens and pools with giant goldfish. (What do they feed those things!?) The hotel is set up in an L-shape, with palapas (thatched-roof huts) in the middle, housing the lunch restaurant, the theater, and walkways. There is a very small beach with kayaks and other activities, but the pool is where the action is. The pool is very large and we never felt crowded. We didn't have any problem finding chairs or a spot to hang out in the pool. There is a good view from anywhere in the pool area and lunch restaurant across the bay to the downtown, with the mountains in the distance. It rained a few days of our stay, and watching the dark clouds roll in was really dramatic. Looking back on our photos, we have this same photo of the view about eight times, but it is really pretty.
We booked the M-Experience room, which was definitely worth it. The M-Experience rooms are the nicest rooms in the resort – they are all ocean-front and have been recently remodeled. We had a flat-screen TV and a modern upscale decor, plus the radio came with an iPod adapter. We had a balcony overlooking the ocean that we used a lot, and it even had a hammock which we enjoyed as well. Our room was close to the pool and lunch restaurant, which made it really convenient. Also, there didn’t seem to be any kids in this area of the hotel, which was nice for us. The room was damp and humid, as some of the other reviews have mentioned, but what do you expect at the beach? Plus it is the rainy season in Vallarta, it is going to be humid everywhere.
The M-Experience rooms are more expensive than the normal rooms, but we waited for an internet deal and got a good rate. Jessica was our personal concierge, and she did a great job. She contacted us before our arrival to see if we needed help arranging any tours or restaurant reservations, or if we had special requests. We had our mini-bar stocked with our favorite sodas and beer, and she gave us advice on a tour we ended up taking (Las Caletas with Vallarta Adventures, I highly recommend it). She even came to meet us at the airport and take us back to the hotel. We left on a Sunday and she was off that day, but Oscar took care of us and knew all about our special requests. My girlfriend even got a piece of cake in the room on her birthday, which we were not expecting! It was a small thing for the hotel to do, but it made her feel good. I made sure to take credit for arranging it with the hotel.
Our Melia concierge also went to the trouble of finding out that we were going off the resort for her birthday dinner, calling the restuarant where we had already made our reservations, and making sure they knew it was my girlfriend's birthday. I discovered this when I snuck off during the dinner to tell our waiter about her birthday. He showed me a note he already had with her name, birthdate, and age! Talk about service! Of course, the birthday song and piece of cake came during dessert.
The restaurants were standard all-inclusive fare. The breakfast buffet turned into a madhouse after 10:00. The lunch buffet at the palapa restaurant was decent and we liked the beachy atmosphere, in the open air by the ocean. There was a snack bar by the pool with the obligatory hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. Besides the buffet for dinner, there were two a la carte restaurants, one of which (Italian) required a reservation. The Italian restaurant was enclosed and air-conditioned, which made it seem more private. The food there was better than I expected, and the wine was decent. There was a guitar trio playing which we enjoyed. Again, our concierge had notified the restaurant that we were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday that weekend, so more cake, more singing! (And I still took credit for setting it up). We ended up eating at the hotel most nights, but the marina is within walking distance if you want to eat at one of the restaurants there.
The service at all the bars was quick and friendly, and I was surprised to find that they had good brand-name liquor, since most all-inclusive hotels buy the cheap stuff. The frozen mixed drinks at the pool bar did the trick, and the bar staff was friendly. My only complaint was that the pool bar was small, and tended to get crowded, especially when only one bartender was on duty. The staff did make regular rounds around the pool to keep you topped off.
My girlfriend got a massage on one of the days, and they gave her the option to have it in the Spa or in a palapa by the ocean. She went with the ocean option, and even though she tells me it was less private (there was a curtain on the side facing the pool), it was relaxing to hear the waves. There was no 30-minute massage option, so if you want one, you have to spring for the 50-minute massage, but it is still reasonably priced.
Overall, the hotel exceeded our expectations. The service was friendly and welcoming, the room was very nice and we enjoyed our time by the pool. Also, special thanks to our personal concierge who made it a very special birthday weekend for my girlfriend, and made me look like the best boyfriend ever.
