We arrived Sunday afternoon, got mobbed by the airport TS people, but made it through quite well. The representitive from Apple Tours was nowhere to be found so we took a taxi to the Melia. The Melia is a beautiful piece of property. Nice entry and reception, after you get used to the parrots. Check in was a breeze. It was all prepaid, and we went AI since we were a ways from town. Had I have really known how often we were going to go into PV, I would have spent a little more and got a hotel in town. Anyway, room was nice. Yes it did smell musty a bit, but my husband who lived in PV about 24 years ago said with all the woodwork, it is bound to smell that way because of the humidity. Simple, old, basic room. Not even close to what it looked like on the website. No big frills. We installed ourselves and went to explore the grounds. Again, very nice grounds. The first night we left the kids at the hotel and went into town. 45 pesos each way in taxi. Ah well...we did eventually venture out on the buses, and never had a problem. Great night to be in PV. It was the ending night of their cultural fair or something, and there were so many performers.....we just stood in awe at most of what we saw. I loved those guys that swing on the ropes around the pole...excellent! We were asked, not chased, not insulted, not touched...just asked if I needed a map, which leads to the pitch, but each time I said "No, thank you" and it was enough. I never bought a thing from a regular store. Only the Flea Market vendors. They barter, stores do not. Never had a problem any of the times we were in town.
When yo arrive at the Melia, someone is assgined to you. They do call it a orientation, but it is to get you to listen to their TS presentation. I was mostly obligated to listen to the TS in the Melia, but they offered my family (4) a cruise on the Yelapa. So I did it. 90 minutes, and no pressure to buy. We were considering it, but told the rep that I would need to think on it. Good thing I did, cause the 3rd day is when the trouble started in the hotel. I will just put the troubles this way - 1st day I didnt tip the maids, we had not a single towel, hand towel or washcloth in our bathroom. I called, 5 hours later, still nothing. I went to the front desk, and they brought 2 towels. There were 4 of us, so I went again. Finally we got the grand total of 4 towels, one washcloth, and one handtowel. Needless to say, I was not happy, but decided to wait to talk to the Gerente (Big Boss) until the next day. The next morning we were completely ignored by the wait staff. We asked for coffee 3 times, no where to get it yourself, and never got anything to drink with that meal. (Yet somehow the waiter in our section had time to serve the Doctors that were there for a convention, not only their drinks, but actually take orders and fill them from the buffett) I had been tipping generously up until that point. Anyway - talked to the boss, was assured it wouldnt happen again, and they gave me a late departure - but it did happen again, 2 towels and no service from the wait staff for the rest of our trip. The Gerente wasn't interested in hearing about it again, so we gave up.
The day before we left, my husband broke the big toes on both feet playing beach volleyball (sponsored activity) and I had to beg, borrow and steal practically to get even a bag of ice. They did offer to call someone to come look at it for $110.00 US, I declined as I know a medical consultation doesnt cost that much, and asked if there was a hospital close and that is where their help stopped. Seems as though If I didnt use their doctor, they weren't going to tell me anything else. I ended up talking to the sweet girl in the towel shack, and she gave me a roll of white medical tape on the sly. I did the best I could to wrap his broken toes, and we left the next morning. The taxi driver asked us how we liked our stay, and I told him we would never return there. He said that the Melia is one of the worst hotels in PV. I would have to agree on a customer service standpoint.
The pool was nice, but the beach is extremely small, and they have vendors that come in through the hotel and set up at the foot of the stairs to the beach. They are very annoying. They even have vendors in the corridors of the hotel. But I will say, they do not offer anything, just are there, in case you would like to buy something for 5 times more than you can buy it for in town.
The food, except for one meal in one of the "Once a visit" resturants, was bland at best. They had a few good dishes, but even that gets old. The kids did enjoy the Palapita - snack bar by the pool.
Getting drinks is another thing. There are really two bars that are not attached to a resturant. If the resturant is closed, so is the bar, so at night, the only place you can get a drink (I'm talking anything, not just booze) is in the Lobby bar. If you are down watching the show, either take two with you, or you will miss half walking to get one. No Kidding.
Loved PV, loved the cruise (which by the way was worth the 90 minutes I gave the TS people) loved the people, the shopping, the food in town. Would go back again in a heartbeat - but not to the Melia. As a matter of fact, I will stay away from the Marina district all together. Too far from the fun.
