“good for families, not so for party goers.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Good for families, not so for party goers.

It is good hotel, convenient from the airport, further away from downtown and night life.

I, my wife and daughter just came back from a Mexico vacation. This was our 5th trip to Mexico and 2nd to Puerto Vallarta. Experience with Melia Vallarta was, overall, pleasing: hotel was clean, well kept, staff was always ready to help, most spoke some English. There were enough activities for all of us, including my 12 year old daughter: every night different show, archery, beach volleyball, swimming pool activities and so on. I give hotel extra pluses for providing free soft drinks and drinkable water in the fridge and also for free, although, at times painfully slow wi fi internet in the lobby. If you want to get internet in your room, you will have to pay. Food was good quality, sometimes lacked variety. This is a family hotel, popular with Mexican families, don't expect wild parties until morning. it has bus stop next to it, about 20-30 minutes to get to Malecon. Taxi ride there about $8.

Overall we really enjoyed our vacation at the Melia last week. We enjoyed the many activities offered- pool, kayak, rock climbing, cooking demos, kids club, batting cage, mini golf, the fabulous shows and more! It offers a lot, not to mention the sun, lounging, the beautiful beach, sand etc! The downside was we were expecting it to be a completely non smoking resort...but it is not! There were people openly smoking poolside, at the pool bar, in the pool, outside the restaurants, and around the resort. We mentioned it a few times to the staff but when we realized they were not prepared to enforce it we gave up and ended up just moving to a place where no one around us was smoking (which at times was difficult). We did not feel it should be our responsibility to say anything and had no desire to get into conflict with people directly by asking them to smoke elsewhere. We would have rated our experience a 4 instead of a 3 if it were not for this issue.

We enjoyed many of our meals and really appreciated the excellent service by the restaurant staff most of the time. We had a chance to try all the restaurants but would only be able to recommend the Mexican restaurant which was excellent. The breakfast buffets was always excellent with made to order eggs or omelettes, pancakes, waffles or french toast everyday and a large selection of fresh fruit and other options. The lunches often featured Mexican specialties like tacos, fajitas, burritos, etc. We enjoy mexican food and loved the chance to try all the traditional salsa's (often 5 or more to choose from)! Also enjoyed making tostadas with the almost daily pulled pork, or shredded beef available to build them with. We especially enjoyed the enchiladas verde, the pablano cream soup, and the taco stations. Don't miss the special dinners when everything is set up on the beach or ourside on the deck, it is such a lovely setting...having dinner, watching the sunset etc. At the special dinners there often large tables where we were at tables with other families and it was a really nice way to meet others and get to know the other guests. The snack bar has a selection of fried foods and one suggestion we would be to include some watermelon or other fresh fruit and maybe some cut fresh veggies to offer some healthy alternatives to snack on.

The bars try their best considering the volume of drinks they serve up everyday. We really enjoyed the lobby bar which has the best selection of better quality brands and is a beautiful setting. Tip - we learned to ask for name brands such as Tanqueray and Tonic instead of Gin and Tonic and also Margaritas on the Rocks (we found the slushy type just way too sweet). The Caesars were good too and the kids loved the Pina Colada's.

Our son enjoyed the kids club 2 days on our week stay. They kept the kids busy building sandcastles, playing in the pool, along with some out of the sun activities like making crafts or playing Wii. Our daughter didn't take to the baby club but we feel the staff tried thier best. (She always wants Mom)

The nightly shows are amazing! The early kids show is lots of fun where they get all the kids who want to participate on the stage. The show after is top quality and the dancers are very talented! We were not able to take in all the shows due to our toddler getting too tired but wish we had been able to. Tip - don't think the Flinstones show is just for kids...it is a Flinstone inspired show and the adults enjoyed it very much.

Room Tip: Really enjoyed our room (2217) it had a lovely view of the gardens and a peak at the ocean.

I can not say enough about this excellent resort. Our family of five had a great holiday. The entertainment was Vegas caliber. The food was ok. After ten days it was nice to get homemade. Staff were super friendly and helpful. We felt at ease with our three children of ten, nine, and four. Going back next year for sure.

Room Tip: Ask for the family room. It has bunk beds.

Myself and my friends had gone to Melia for a wedding. The staff was utterly rude and dissrespectful could barely speak any English and would bag for tips. The bars were always closed when we would like a drink the bathrooms were in unconvienient places and hardly had any bathrooms. The buffet served the same things daily. The day of the wedding the wedding planner was no where in site. And we were also told we had to leave the restaurant we were having the reception cause the guys were wearing dressed Capris. And not long pants which ruined the married couples night and they had to share the room with people who we didn't even know. And the lobby bar cut off our group because we didn't drink the drinks they made wrong and put tequila in when we specifically asked for white rum. I would never ever recommend anyone to go to this resort if your basically going for your kids it would be good but to celebrate a wedding theu were very unprofessional for the amount of money the married couple paid and we still even had to pay extra for wanting asteak. All the al a carts asked for more money to have an actual good meal. All inclusive should be everything. Very unexceptable

This was the worst trip I have ever been on which really sucks because it was the first one that we took the kids on. The front desk staff were a bunch of cold robots with no common sense what so ever! The resort sold out to the locals to fill it, so on that note we had an iPhone and some speakers stolen out of our room. We had security come and check our room and scans the lock to see who was in there but they said it was only us and the maid, but after the phone went missing we had noticed that our patio door was always unlocked on few different time when we know for a fact that we triple checked it was locked before we left the room. And it was at times that the maid had already been in the room or she had not come yet. My guess is that someone was in the room and hope out the patio cause they heard us coming, we were on ground level. On top of being stolen from my 3yr old son cut his knee and need stiches on a spot in the pool that was missing tile and shape. The resort is very run down and not kid friendly. The beach has course sand and the kids couldn't play in the water without me or my husband holding there hand because the undertow was so strong. I would post some pic but our camera was stolen from senor frogs in pv one afternoon while eating there. Just pick a different place to visit I wouldn't want anyone to go through our experience.

We've stayed at numerous all inclusives in a variety of areas in Mexico and the Dominican ranging from 3 star to 5 stars so we can rate this honestly with some basis.

The hotel: Old but very clean and well maintained.

Food: Average. We enjoyed breakfast and lunch is average buffet food but the dinners were not great. Despite trying the A La Cartes we preferred the buffet and that was just average BUT just a five minute walk away is the marina with a lot of great restaurants.

Staff: Absolutely fantastic as most of the reviews state. The most pleasant and attentive staff we have ever come across.

Area: Get out and take the bus to the Malecon or hop in a cab for $8US. Don't worry it is safe. Walk to the marina its beautiful. If you have reservations about the safety of leaving a resort don't be. Get out and take the kids!

Hotel Amenities: Have toddlers or young children? Use the daycare. Even if you drop the kid(s) off for only an hour or two occassionally to relax for a bit it is great. We waited to the last days to try it for a couple hours with our 15 month old little girl and we are still kicking ourselves for waiting. The girls that take care of the kids are amazing. When we would try and take our girl out she would try and hide because she wanted to stay and play with the other kids and the loads of toys. Use the daycare!

The pool is great as well but despite what some reviewers put we found it hard to get chairs in good areas that offered shade so go down before breakfast and reserve your spot.

Rooms: Spring for the junior suite! We'd put the little one to bed in the bedroom and we'd be able to sit in the living room for a glass of wine while she slept. The rooms are nice and well maintained.

Atmosphere: This place caters to families and the shows are family oriented. They even have the Flintstone characters walking around occassionally. Just be aware that even in the pub at night there will be kids running around.

We are already talking to our friends that have young children about going back.

This was a nightmare for me and my family. I booked this trip through Selloff Vacations/Signature Vacations/Sunwing (they all buy and sell these packages together or something).

Upon arrival the desk staff were nonchalant and stone-faced. Not rude, exactly, but not at all interested in offering a smile or a word of encouragement, either.

When we walked into our room we were appalled. There were mouldy, dented lampshades, mould in the walls and tiles (especially in the bathroom), blood smeared on the wall and feces in the toilet. The smell of the mould was overpowering. The door would not lock (the handle actually hung detached from the inside of our door), the safe would not lock and the deck door would also not lock.

Upon complaining we were upgraded, but this took more than 36 hours and in the new room (which they did clean very well), we had black water coming out of the plumbing, another safe that didn't work, deck chairs that broke when we sat in them, a tv remote with dead batteries, and the list goes on. The hospitality manager sent up some chocolate covered strawberries by way of apology but the list kept growing bigger and bigger. After a point we just stopped complaining, knowing little would be done to rectify the situation.

I was told by a phone rep that the Melia had "The best kids' club in Mexico!" In fact, there were live electric wires sticking out of poles and concrete ground in the outdoor area of the kids' club (in the rain). There was caution tape up around the trampoline. The ladies working there were okay, but seemed tired and a bit disinterested. The lock on the gate into the outdoor play area was also broken.

It took them three days to even begin to pick up the debris from their New Year's Eve celebration, which meant there were sharp metal serving table and kitchen pieces, garbage and nails lying around in the walkways leading to the beach. Because there were heavy rains in the days preceding this a lot of this stuff was literally floating around under our feet. The pool tiles were either cracked or had been badly patched, there were towels laid out in the courtyard stairwells for where the rain was leaking through and various safety hazards around the resort - unattended ladders left set up, electrical boxes left open, and so on and so forth.

The food was mediocre. At least the buffets had a decent range of variety because it was pretty much one or the other for most of our trip. The restaurants requiring reservations lost the one we made 50% of the time and the only one I would recommend is the Mexican one.

If there was one good thing about this hotel it was the on-call doctor, Dr. Navaro. Our five year-old son, to add to our nightmare, got Scarlett fever while we were there. !!! Thank goodness the doctor was there and able to get a prescription delivered to the resort at 1am on a Sunday morning. He was excellent and remained attentive through the rest of our stay (luckily we had medical insurance in our credit card).

The best part of our visit was the day trip tour we took to las Caletes. Worth the money spent and a relief to be taken care of and entertained as our experience at the resort was so bad. I was stressed the entire week because I felt responsible for having wasted my family's money, having been the one to book the vacation. We were utterly let down and our attempts at recompensation were met with, in essence, a firm and resolute "too bad, so sad, no money back for you," with the pathetic exception of their offer to give each adult on the trip a $200 travel voucher to be used within their company on a future trip.

We will NEVER travel with these companies again. I will post pictures in the near future.

Room Tip: No such thing here, but go for the ocean front if you have to book one. The rest look like something...
