My wife and I, her two brothers and their wives all spent a glorious week here. To start with, there are two full service in house restaurants, one on the beach front that is casual dining and another, Andreas, which is more upscale. We did most of our dining at Andreas for two important reasons. First and foremost, the service here was that of a 5-star restaurant. Every dining need is meticulously attended to, the wait staff is some of the best we have experienced anywhere in the world (ask specifically for either Ivan or Oscar - you will be absolutely amazed at their attentiveness, professionalism, and sincere friendliness). In addition, the quality and presentation of the meals was unsurpassed. There is a different ethnic theme each night (French, Italian, Mexican, etc.) along with a food and salad bar.
You can receive room service as part of the all-inclusive 24 hours/day. We enjoyed breakfast in our room several times and it was wonderful. Not only did they get our order correct every time, but every potential need was also addressed such as condiments, cloth napkins, and covered plates.
Each couple had their own one-bedroom unit and they are all very spacious. There is a large living room with two couches and a TV, a full kitchen that is stocked daily with cold juices, sodas, bottled water, cereal, and snacks. The granite bathroom had a combination bathtub and shower. There was a king sized bed in the separate bedroom that was one of the most comfortable we have ever experienced. If you are interested in a good ocean view from the expansive balcony, ask to get on at least the fourth floor. From our sixth floor balcony we had a great view of the ocean and the entire courtyard and pools. The room is impeccably cleaned every day, and we liked the voluntary concept of having only those linens that we had used replaced each day.
Poolside and on the beach, there are waiters that cater to your every need, whether it's food or drink that you request. There are also daily poolside activities such as music, dancing, bingo, ping pong, and various fun contests.
We absolutely loved the location. While it is about a 15 minute taxi ride to downtown (about 8 U.S. dollars for a party of 4), this northern hotel section of the city is very quiet , very clean, and very very safe. We had absolutely no concerns about taking a short walk any time of the day or night. All of the news we hear in the States about the violence in Mexico certainly does NOT apply to anywhere in Puerto Vallarta. This not a border town and those perceptions should not influence anyone's decision about visiting here.
With the all-inclusive Velas offers two free bus day tours, one through downtown and old town Vallarta, and another about the art of making tequila. We did take the downtown/old town tour and is well worth the 4 hours or so.The guide, Arturo, was well versed, friendly and spoke easy to understand English. This tour provides a nice glimpse of the city and it's history.
Finally, I feel compelled to dispell the stories I have heard about the time share situation.
During our initial orientation, we were asked if we would be interested in the time share presentation. We politely said no and that was the last time we heard about it. This might have been the softest time share presentation request we have ever experienced.
Velas Vallarta is THE place to go for both adults and children The service everywhere throughout the location was of the highest quality, the rooms and amenities are excellent, and the location could not have been better. And the friendly peacocks roaming the premise are the icing on the cake!

Room Tip: Fourth floor or higher for the view.

Agree with all the positive reviews. The resort is lovely and the food and service was outstanding! We did find the resort to be too quiet and not much entertainment at the pool and the night time entertainment was very lacking. For that reason we would not go back. We are used to resorts that have shows after dinner that are entertaining and 'fun'. They did have some shows but late and not too exciting. If you want rest and relaxation and very quiet evenings then you will enjoy this place. The rester aunt at the other hotel that you can have dinner at is very, very good and the outdoor gym there is very nice and very quiet. The gym the main hotel is very, very hot and hard to work out in due to it being too warm.

We just returned from a month long stay at the Velas Vallarta. We love this resort for the friendly staff, lush gardens and close to the Marina. We do not do the all inclusive since there are so many great resturants near by. We have visited this resort for the past 15 yrs. The staff is exceptional. We look forward to seeing Jacinto each year. He is one of the best pool waiters. Very friendly always has a smile and makes our stay very relaxing. Since we go for the entire month of February we have made many great friends that return yearly at the same time. Everyone ejoys visiting. There are many things to do. The entertainment staff always make it interesting. Looking forward to our 2012 vacation.

We had no issues with feeling unsafe the entire week. We took the bus to the Marina for dinner and took a taxi downtown to dinner several other nights. We walked to the local grocery store during the day and also walked to the Marina. The vacation was relaxing and the grounds and pool are beautiful. All of the staff was helpful and friendly. The view from our room on the 7th floor was breathtaking and included the pool, grounds and ocean. We had a great week and would recommend Puerta Vallarta and this resort to everyone.

We (my husband, sister, and brother-in-law) have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Velas Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta. This resort gives the choice of all-inclusive, which we took. One would think that after 10 days of eating right on the beach, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner--by the way, watching the most incredible sunset every night--that one would get tired of the food. The buffets and menu entrees were excellent and there were enough choices to enjoy throughout our entire stay. There is also a specialty restaurant which was very good. But we liked being right on the beach--especially since we had come from a cold and snowy winter!! The room we had was on the ground level, facing the back of the resort--no view. If possible, a room facing the pool or on an upper level would be preferable.

The price we paid was an excellent bargain.

The grounds were impeccably kept!!! Beautiful plants hanging from the balconies, greenery, were tended to every day (and night). Three pools were warm and clean, and we never felt that there were crowds even though we were there when one of the large companies were holding their annual convention. The beach was lovely--although too cool to go into the water, so we aren't sure if swimming in the ocean was the best. We enjoyed sitting on the beach--soft sand--and in the shade provided. Vendors were there to sell their wares, but we didn't find they were offensive.

Peacocks and iguanas roamed the complex, and the iguanas loved being fed hibiscus flowers and settling down right under your lounge chair at the pool!! Make sure you keep your camera handy. Although they look pretty ugly, they are pretty friendly--no teeth, just gums:)

Service in the dining room, by the pool, and in the lobby was superb. The staff was more than willing to help and provide us with any information we needed.

We were originally told that we could go to a sister resort for dinner if we made reservations. Unless you get in line in the lobby by 6:30 a.m., reservations were all taken. We didn't mind, though, because we were totally happy with the restaurants at the resort.

One attraction which is worth going to is the Wildlife Connection whale watch and dolphin swim. We did this the last time we were in PVR. The only thing to consider though is if you tend to get motion sickness, take meds before you leave. The day we went it was very rough, and we had motor trouble and had side to side motion while stopped. But this group is led by National Geographic biologists, and we got gorgeous pictures of the whales.

Downtown PVR is lovely to walk around in and see the sand sculptures and rock formations on the beach. Good shopping also. A cab ride costs $8. The flea market is a good place to get things, and don't forget to bargain!! The flea market at the end of town is the one to go to.

Velas is a short walk to the Marina--very lovely, and a chance to see all the gorgeous yachts. Massages at the Venus Sunshine spa at the Marina are wonderful--and only $50/1-1/2 hr. Well worth it!!!

The one thing that could be improved upon is the evening entertainment and shows.

We would go back in a heartbeat--it was VERY hard to leave the peacefulness of the gardens, beach, and view of the mountains.

We had another wonderful vacation at Velas Vallarta. This was our third trip and we enjoy it more each time. The restaurants were great. The beds and bedding were fabulous. The staff was very accommodating and kind. The all inclusive makes for a week never having to say no, a great fantasy for parents of college kids. The weather was tremendous. I love the open beach front dining.

I want to say that Marcelino from the aqua bar went above and beyond. He was so fun to watch. He brought drinks to us and others poolside. He spoke with every person and had everyone laughing and enjoying themselves. He seemed to take a special interest in our family but I know that everyone he serves feels that way. He is quick with a compliment, a smile and our drink order. He looked like he was having fun and he made it fun. Velas Vallarta is lucky to have him. Whatever he is paid it should be doubled! The hotel should use him as a trainer.

Room Tip: West side decks are cooler in evening.
