“Fabulous holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

I recently stayed at the Barcelo for 5 nights and 6 days with a group of friends for a wedding. My room (1616) was really spacious and spotless. Each day my housekeeper Magdalena would leave fresh flowers in my bathroom. There is so much to do that I spent very little time in my room except to sleep and change but the linens and towels and bathrobes were excellent quality.
Breakfast was a feast and the view of the ocean from the patio was a great way to start the day. The omlettes are made to order with a variety of fillings-my favourite being spinach and onion and cheese. The freshly squeezed green juice was another favourite.
The staff are lovely, always attentive and polite and a few dollars here and there really gets you first class service.
The pools are spotless and the surrounding area always freshly swept and clean. The hotel was fairly full and the other guests were mostly Mexican which was a refreshing change for an all inclusive hotel. There were plenty of loungers around the pool.
The wedding took place on Friday evening at sunset on the beach and was magical. Then all 14 of us had dinner at Capri which was excellent. The chef had baked a special chocolate wedding cake with fresh cream-delicous.
The excursions are also worthwhile-the adventure excursion with zip lining, water slides and rapelling is well worth the money.
All in all I cannot fault the hotel, the food was always good with lots of choice.

Room Tip: Room 1616 has a lovely ocean view from the patio

This was our first time stay in a all inclusive resort, and the experience was great! We pre-rearranged all the dates for excursions and dinner reservations which was a smart thing to do. The excursion and dinner reservation manager Adelina was great and very patient with all my questions about how things work. On top of that, she replied my e-mail super fast! The rooms were big, nice, and clean, we got 1315 and 1318, the view was great! They restocked the mini fridge every day, one time we saw the guy that came to stock them, and he just let us take whatever we want from the cart (awesome!). All the staff were super friendly, we were so surprised that they keep encouraged alcohol and food! We went to all the restaurants on the resort, the best reserved restaurant was the Italian restaurant, everything there was so good including the appetizer bar. The El Patio buffet was good too, some foods are the same everyday but there's always something different everyday too. If you would like speciality coffee (e.g., latte or cappuccino), you can ask the staff in the buffet, they will get the kitchen to make it for you :). Although they don't taste like Starbucks quality, it still made me feel special :D. They have promotion for excursions, buy 2 get 1 free (selected ones); strongly recommend the Outdoor Adventure (Ziplining). We also went to Las Caletas and Rhythms of the Night. Las Caletas is a beach, they offered a bunch a activities there that you can do, we went there from our hotel's beach by a speed boat (pretty fun). Rhythms of the Night included a long boat ride to Las Caletas, a show (pretty good), and dinner (pretty good but I think some of us got sick stomach the day after); it's good for couples because they light the whole beach with just candle and fire sticks. Also strongly suggest the City Tour, great for learning some history of the city and souvenir shopping! Five of us went, and non of us got sick from the food in resort, but I would still suggest get all your vaccines updated (Hep A*), get prescribed wide-spectrum antibiotics, and some medications (Tylenol, Advil, Imodium, bug spay*, Benadryl, Pepto-Bismol, etc...). The resort charged any extra spending under the rooms in Pesos, although they quote most of the price in USD, they used a higher exchange rate to converted into Pesos; so if you want to pay using Canadians and/or American, they converted into Pesos using a lower exchange rate (complicated). To sum up, they make money by playing around with the exchange rate, so I would suggest exchange enough Pesos for your stay so you will only pay the one time exchange rate lost (from your bank, which is small). We had a very good experience there and will definitely go back to this resort again!

Room Tip: I think building one will be better than building two (in terms of the view), we didn't upgrade...

We stayed here for 10 days starting April 23.If you like great service, large rooms, not a large party hotel then this is the place to go! It is about 15 minutes or so outside of PV close to the original set of Night of the Iguana. The hotel and grounds are not overly huge but give you enough room. The beach is smaller but long , the only downfall to the beach is the **rocky sand** they need to work on it. The service was awesome,I am an early riser (5:30 am ish)and the buffet doesn't open until 7), after the first morning of asking them for a coffee (which they had to go make) for the next 9 days as soon as they saw me coming they went it to get me one! The food was very good (and I am very picky) they have 3 a la cartes and the only one I would not recommend is the Italian. The rooms are quite large and there all lots of places to actually put away your clothes which is nice when you are there for 10 days. The drinks are amply poured and everyone wears a smile all the time which is nice. There is a zoo just up the road which was a nice 10 minute walk and worth the $10 we paid to get in and $5 for a large bag of food to feed the animals. We took the city buses to go everywhere which I recommend rather than cabbing it. There are a few things the Barcelo needs to work on (although they aren't huge) The pool swim-up bar needs to be open later than 6PM and needs more music. The evening entertainment needs to be improved although they do a great job. Aside from that all was awesome.. oh and if you book excursions do take the City-Tequila tour (free when you do 3 excursions) it was great and the food at the Don Julio ranch was fantastic!

Room Tip: All the rooms are large.. no need to upgrade and pay the extra money it really isn't worth it.

The rooms were nice. However the service for room cleaning was extremely late. We had to call and complain a couple of times until our room was cleaned. This was 5-6pm. Also, we had a safe go out, so I had to sit in the room for a few hours waiting for them to replace it. Other then that, the food was good. Service on drinks could have been a little faster as well.

Hotel was very nice and good service. Most of the staff were friendly and attentive. Food was very good. It was our first time at an all inclusive and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. The only problem I had was with the cleaning of our rooms and the package we purchased included restocking of the mini fridge which was rarely done. Every night we had to call for the water to be restocked. Which they did so not really a big deal but service is important. Also one day we wanted our towels changed out and they hung up the towels we put on the floor. Luckily we still had clean folded towels! Other than those little things it was a very nice vacation. I don't think we'd go back but I would recommend it for a quieter spring break.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in tower 2. You are away from the bar noise and the views are incredible.

We have stayed at many AI's all over Mexico and the Barcelo in Mismaloya is very beautiful. The rooms are huge, the location - although quite south of the town is easy to access by a 7peso public bus (the bus stop is right outside the hotel) or $15 taxi for shopping excursions.
The only disappointing thing was the food. Horrible coffee, limited buffet selection, and the waiters were not very professional.
Having said that, the sangria at the Spanish restaurant was lovely.
Another comment is that they started playing techno music around 10am. :-/ i beg that they please wait until noon at least and add some variety to the selection.
Thanks.

Having visited this area (Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Bucerias) before, we were pleasantly surprised arriving at the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta in Mismaloya! About 20 minutes south of PVR - the hotel almost commands a bay of it's own, sharing with some condos up on the hill, and a small community right next door. The mountainous terrain that surrounds you is inviting - this seems so far away from the "hotel row" in town and to the north.
The beach is relatively small - at high tide the water almost reaches the beach wall - but during the day there were plenty of chaise lounges to occupy beachside if that was your preference. The pools are huge, with plenty of choice to get involved with activities or just hang back and relax...read your book.
Far away from the "mega" resort footprint - the Barcelo is 2 towers built in a "U" shape with the lobby and public rooms connecting them. All rooms face towards the center pool area, so if the ocean view is what you want - try for a higher floor to see above the palms.
Right next door is a small community - with beach bars and small restaurants..massage huts, and boats for hire. $15 got us 1 1/2 hours out snorkelling - and $20 bought an hour of heaven on the massage bed, waves lapping up on the shore.
There are vendors on the beach - and we chose to befriend them rather than continually push them away - despite not always wanting to purchase their wares, we became fast friends learning about their lifestyle, their families - and we felt that this experience only added to the overall ambience of this charming destination.
We didn't feel like we were in the "epi-centre" of tourism - the hotel was small enough to be thought of as "intimate" - but at the top of the road, we would catch the local bus and be at the south end of the malecon in no time.
This was a perfect blend of culture combined with all the creature comforts of a compact resort property....not in the center of things, but close enough that you could immerse yourself in shops, restaurants and sightseeing if you so choose. I won't hesitate to recommend this property......
...but....take some bug spray...we all came home with bites on our legs presumably from the beach......
We stayed in a "Family" Suite....the junior suites all have a "living" area in a room right when you walk in...with a bathroom in the middle, and the main bed facing into the balcony. In the Family Suite - this "living" room is made into a separate bedroom - affording you two sleeping areas each with your own bathroom.
