“Laidback and beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Stayed here Jan 2-9, ignored the negative reviews and had a great time. Beautiful location, not a great resort if you are a beach person. Awesome if you are a pool person though. The surrounding mountains and jungle views are breathtaking.

Carlos checked us in at the Frontdesk. Poor guy seemed to be working day and night all week but always had a smile and was very polite. Humberto was our porter and was very helpful and friendly.Julio was very efficient in helping us out one evening. Esteban at the reservations desk was also very helpful, friendly and accomodating. Had read in reviews that Claudia (frontdesk) was rude, everyone is right on that. No eye contact and never smiled, not very eager to assist anyone.

Service was great everywhere else. Restaurant and bar staff were always very efficient with the exception of one girl on the evening buffet. She handed us a tripadvisor card and asked us to mention her name here, then gave us the worst service we had anywhere. Food handling in restaurants was no better or worse than I have seen in past trips to Mexico. seemed to be a good selection of premium liquor but bartenders could use a little more training on their blended drinks.

Rooms were spacious and clean. Beds were very comfortable, wasn't a fan of the velcro at the top of duvet though, all sorts of hair and fuzz caught in velcro. Very gross! First 5 days we had 4 towels, 2 facecloths and a bathmat. Last 2 days only 2 towels, no facecloths and no bathmat. Made due with what we had. Fridge was stocked daily.

Didn't use the spa but we did get excellent massages just down the beach at Erica's. One hour for 300 pesos.

There is a booth set up on the highway right outside of the Hotel. The lady there is awesome! She speaks good english and will help you with directions or anything you need. Her husband has horseback riding and she also sells zoo tickets and other misc. things.

Enjoyed our stay!

This was the best vacation. The food was excellent. The Junior suite overlooking the beach, pool and jungle was spectacular. The staff so accomodating and always wore a smile. All I can say about the less than stellar reviews are that there are some people out there that complain about everything in life. No complaints from us. We can't wait to return to Barcelo. I am already looking at specials. Could not believe that top shelf alchohol was part of the all inclusive. Only 25 minutes to downdown PV. I did all my souvenier shopping at the hotel. Prices were competitive or less than downtown PV.
Make sure you eat at Tony's which is up the street from Barcelos

Room Tip: we stayed in room 1811. Which had the perfect views

The staff was very friendly and attentive.
Carlos at the front desk was very accommodating.
Edgar & Martin in La Cantina Bar were great!
Rooms were very large with separate seating area from sleeping area.
Beds were new & firm. Linens & pillows were great!
We were able to book our a’lacarte reservations for the week upon arrival.
The Italian was the best. Steak & Seafood was ok. Spanish had a great appetizer bar.
The food was good. Wok bar for stirfries was nice. If you can’t find something to enjoy eating you are too picky!
Snack bar is full service & had great salsa & chips they deliver when you sit down.
Sunday night is prime rib on the buffet.
Gym had top equipment.
We took the bus into Puerto Vallarta for about 7 pesos each. The stop is right outside the gate. Pay in pesos and they carry change.
We took a cab back at a cost of about $12.
Wonderful part is No Time Shares!!!
Pools were warm and well maintained. Drink service around the pool was contant throughout the day. We do tip which is greatly appreciated.
No dance club but most nights there is a bar tour that leaves from the lobby $10-$15 per person.
This is a low key resort and exactly what we were looking for!
Definitely will be back!

My friends and I stayed at the Barcelo in Puerto Vallarta for one week in the beginning of January. We found it quite odd from the start that the so called "beach" that the hotel overlooks was made up of rocky sand that was extremely uncomfortable to walk on. Not only did the sand appear to be fake, but we often saw sandbags on shore at various points in the day depending on how high or low the tide was. In addition, there were several vendors that immediately attack you upon going down to the beach. This was quite annoying and bothersome- although the hotel does try to block them off by creating a barrier line preventing them from crossing, this was rarely enforced, and left only a few feet width wise to relax on. With that being said, the hotel was beautiful, with a couple of large pools and two hot tubs. However, the beach was closed off one morning for a hotel photo shoot, and the same was done for the pool another morning. The drinks were good, however the food was below average. My friends and I got a kick every day when we went to the snack bar and asked what the fish of the day was, because it never appeared to change. The spanish a la carte restaurant was decent, but the Italian one "Capri" was the worst experience of our trip. Not only did we wait over an hour for our food, but when we received our food the pasta was hard, and the fish was terribly undercooked- at that point we decided to just leave since the waiting staff did not seem to want to cater to our concerns. We also found it strange that we were not permitted to eat in the a la carte restaurant if we did not make a reservation- we would have understood this protocol and policy if the restaurant was overbooked but when we were turned down there were plenty of tables that were open. The hotel charges 13 dollars for wifi (for a 24 hour period) and I must say this might have been the biggest mistake I made. Not only did the wifi NOT work in the room but only on the balcony, my friends and I were constantly forced to have to reconnect to the internet once every half an hour. When voicing this complaint to the front desk they did not seem interested in fixing the situation. I was forced to stand on my balcony whenever I needed to get in touch with the real world. Another note about the hotel is the fact that the front desk is extremely unhelpful. For example, my friends and I decided that we wanted to eat at a restaurant outside of the hotel. When approaching the front desk to ask for any restaurants nearby, the front desk usually shrugged and said they didnt know of any places. I found this to be extremely strange this their job is to know the town and places to go to- when in fact they gave us a place to go to, we asked them if we could see a menu so that we could decide if we wanted to go there, and of course they told us that they couldn't do so. This was a reoccurrence that occurred more than once. My final concern was exchanging money. Since none of the shops took American Dollars, money had to be exchanged at the front desk- however this process took extremely long, and often times the front desk wouldn't even have Pesos on hand and told us to come back the next day. The staff in general were not pleasant and did not seem to try to want to help us with our needs and requests. With that being said, I do not recommend this place to anyone.

i just got back from my trip today with some of my friends. the resort is very nice. the pools and bars are great, its a nice place to be from a visual standpoint. Though the front desk was HORRIBLE. They are totally useless and can't help you with anything. It seems as if the people behind the desk were picked randomly off the streets. The beach at the hotel is fake. its filled with sandbags and fake rocky sand that dosent feel real at all. they have a border to make sure vendors don't bother you but NOBODY inforces it and seems to care. so while you try relax on the "beach" you will constantly have vendors in your face. The lunch and dinner was 'ehh" one night i got my fish extremely raw and was anything but edible and my noodles weren't even cooked and the staff didn't seem to care at all. The breakfast was very nice they had a large selection. My last issue was that everyday it seemed that the locals of puerto vallarta would purchase one day passes to the hotel and were extremely rude and reckless. Screaming constantly and there was no sense of urgency by any of the staff members to quiet them down as a normal staff would. no, i would not recommend staying at the Barcelo as it has its pros but mainly cons. I would appreciate it if the manager dosent copy and paste the same response to my review but rather write a genuine one. Thank you.

Rooms really clean, hotel in general really nice, great pools, good cantina to enjoy but missing live music or entertainment. Restaurants ( capri, los arcos) excellent, the restaurant buffet is a little less than average in quality, sometimes it would take almost 30 min to re fill an entree or missing clean plates, and you would understand when the restaurant is full but not when the restaurant had only 15-20 clients constantly. Also, for a foreigner the food can be ok but for a mexican I believe that the food has a tremendous room for improvement. I believe the hotel needs better customer service training in general (that can improve your reviews). Some staff was sometimes great but most of the time average. I found something really interesting, the staff smiled only occasionally and is missing guidance for clients on arrival. Something that was absurd and should be addressed immediately is the extra charge for internet ($150 mexican pesos for 24 hrs for only one device and to use their computers $40 mexican pesos for 15 min.) there are places such as coffee shops that offer you free wifi for buying just a cup of coffee or 3 star hotels in downtown puerto vallarta that provide free wifi to clients. Puerto Vallarta in general is not a place to enjoy the beach as you would do in Cancun, Manzanillo, Acapulco, therefore the hotel should stand on what they offer within their resort. I believe this hotel at this time is not the best place to go in Puerto Vallarta. I believe this hotel is not at the level of Barcelo's international reputation.

Just got back. Stayed at Barcelo Jan. 4 - 11th. Nice resort, but if you stayed at a 4.5/5 star, this does not compare.

Our family for the last 5 years, always right after Christmas, have been travelling to Mexico at different locations (PV, Los Cobos, Cancun etc.) and have always stayed at a Rui hotel. This year we decided to try the Barcelo. The hotel was very nice much smaller than what we are used to. The rooms were very nice and large and the beds were VERY COMFORTABLE. The pools were heated which was nice, but the needed better music during the day around th pool. There was night shows, so the nights were very long and it was so far away from the town that we went to our room early.

The food was average. The Buffet for breakfast was good, but stay away for the lunch and dinners (below average). After staying at a Rui chain where their buffet was like entering a Ball Room with so many food stations to choose from, you did not care to go to the al la carts. The buffet here was so small we thought it felt like going to a cafateria and the food to go with it. There was no variety. Every night the food was the same (very little to choose from) we are not picky eaters, but there was really no food that looked appealing and tasted that good. Again at the Rui, there was so much seafood (mussel, shrimp ect. cooked various ways) there was absolutely NOOOOOO seafood here. And for children not a lot to choose from. They do have a grill restaurant that was amazing for lunch. The al la carts were very good, but unless you paid $ 30 per person per night for the premium you could only go 3 times and were stuck going to the buffet. Other resorts NO LIMITS.

About people getting sick, my husband and son were sick for over 24 hours. It was not the food, there is some virus for sure going around this resort because there were so many people getting sick. Other years never gotting sick once.

Overall we enjoyed our trip and the resort is very nice and the staff very pleasant, but we do not think we would come back. Spend the same or a little more and go to a Rui Hotel. We will never stray again.
