We stayed at the CasaMagna for two weeks this summer with our 5 year old, 4 year old and 5 month old. We did not do the all-inclusive plan, since our kids don't eat enough to justify it. In general, this property is quite nice, though it is a little aged. Here is what we thought for each topic:
Check-in: this was one of the roughest parts, because after our hot journey from the airport with our bags, the lobby is not air conditioned. Normally that is fine, but we were so hot and tired by this point we didnt really want to stand in a long slow line in the hot lobby to check in. It would be nice if they would provide a welcome drink or more personalized check in services. Then when we got our room keys, we got all the way up to our room and it wasn't cleaned yet. They gave us a couple drink vouchers for our trouble so that was nice.
Rooms: the rooms are very clean with nice marble floors. Room size is sufficient, but not huge for a resort. The views on either side of the Building are beautiful. The bathrooms are nice, and there is a small coffee maker and minibar. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. The tv had several U.S. stations and a couple English movie channels. The wireless reliability was just ok. We were able to successfully watch Netflix via wifi, so I guess that's pretty good. The housekeeping staff is great, especially Luisa. It seems like they have a lot of redundancy though. Each day one person cleaned our room, someone else delivered bottled water, someone else delivered coffee packets, and someone else delivered shampoo, etc if we needed it.
Pool: we spent a lot of time at the pool. The BEST time to go is in the morning. Since the pool is heated, in the afternoons the water gets way too warm in the hot sun and it also gets very crowded. There is nice food and beverage service most of the day. The activity staff is very nice, and we got to know them pretty well. Carlos and Alan are particularly great to work with. They have pool floaties for kids to play with available to use. It was a little confusing trying to determine what was free and what had a charge. The pool will soon need an update. Some tiles need replacing, and my kids cut their feet a few times on broken tiles. Also, we were lucky that our kids can swim, because the main pool is about 4.5 feet deep everywhere. The kids area and pool are not comfortable or nice. Gravel and an wooden playset with minimal shade options. We spent all of our time at the main pool.
Food: the food at the resort is expensive as one would expect, but you do get what you pay for. It is very good! There were some weekday and early bird specials, and we took advantage of those. We really enjoyed Champions. The BBQ pork sandwich was delicious! Las Casitas had delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner as well. Alfredo at Champions was great!
Since we weren't on the all-inclusive plan, we did venture to the Marina a few times. Las Palomas was good for dinner, as was Bacha and the Brazilian steak house. Mr. Cream for breakfast was awesome! Also, Sonora Prime Grille is really really good and they offer babysitting while you eat! There is also a grocery store and McDonalds within walking distance to the hotel.
Gym/spa: we did not get to use the spa, but we did work out a couple times and the gym is great. Equipment is top notch.
Turtle release: this was a neat experience for our kids, but it is not well-advertised. We kept having to ask about it. It's a great program though. People are very pushy at the release, but just be patient, everyone gets a chance to hold one.
Kids club: our kids would have appreciated more activities. We didnt use the kids club because it was $30 per child per day! They should offer free kids activities. There was nothing free for the kids besides swimming. Most resorts offer other activities. We were lucky the weather was nice.
All in all we really enjoyed our time in PVR, and we would stay at the casamagna again. Happy travels!
