So I just want to add a few comments about this place. This was my second stay here, although my first was several years ago and I was only here one night. There have been a lot of really negative comments, and I suppose some of them are warranted. But if you know what to expect before you get here, you'll end up not being so overly disappointed.
First the cons:
Certainly not the Four Seasons or a Westin. If that's what you're expecting, you're a horrible trip planner. This place is at best a 2-Star Hotel. Better than a Travel Lodge, maybe more like an older Comfort Inn.
Despite what they claim as "recently renovated", this place is in desperate need of an upgrade. I suspect that the new upscale gay resort being built a couple of blocks past this place and across from the gay beach, they'll figure out they'll need to really spend some money on a major face-lift. The 6th floor pool is in shambles, and I don't think anyone actually uses this. It's kind of a joke anyway, more like an oversize hot tub. The rooms need work too. Our shower curtain rod was actually resting on two towel racks installed to hold the rod because it was too short to reach across the shower stall.
A/C didn't work the first night, we asked for a new room. But they sent maintenance to fix it and he discovered the air filter was so dirty it couldn't pass air through. Once he cleaned it, it worked fine. Maintenance people, maintenance.
Housekeeping is sporadic. We didn't get a towel refresh the first day. Got extra towels the next, then back to the basic two bath towels the following day. And beach sand that got tracked in didn't get cleaned up, at least not completely.
The place is generally noisy. We couldn't hear the club music from our first floor room but people in the adjacent condos were very noisy, and then we got moved to a room with a better view, but it was right off the hallway and people going up and down the stairs were even noisier. There was also a lot of construction noise because they are building a new condo tower, but that's to be expected during the day and that didn't bother us because they didn't start until after about 9.
The room we got moved to the door lock was broken and you could actually force open the door really easily. We reported it to maintenance which said it wasn't fixed. I had to show the guy how to bypass the locked handset. So he tore it apart and "fixed" it again. It wasn't, but we were only there another day and we didn't keep valuables in our room, so we weren't concerned.
The front counter staff was very responsive. The aforementioned A/C problem was responded to muy pronto! Ericka was super nice and helpful, and almost everyone was very helpful with recommendations and directions. Even though our few problems were fixed rather quickly, Ericka offered to move us to a nicer room.
The beach is right there. If you are just going to hang out at the gay beach, and charge beach side drinks to your room, and you don't care for upscale accommodations, this place is for you! Beyond that it's not really convenient to much else. It's kind of on the end of the stretch, and you have to walk several blocks to eating places, and anywhere from 5-12 blocks to the gay clubs. I've also stayed previously at The Tropicana which is a really nice place about 2-3 blocks closer to the action, but still right on the beach and very short walk to the gay beach area. Much cleaner, beautiful grounds and awesome pool. It's a mainstream hotel, but very gay friendly. There are other gay guesthouses within 4-6 blocks of the beach, and I may try them in the future, but I know that Tropicana is accessible to everything i need.
Finally, and maybe most importantly, Puerto Vallarta is SAFE! Regrettably, the media has blown the situation in Mexico way out of proportion. I've been to PV several times and never once had a problem with safety, the locals or the police. Just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings and don't make yourself a target.
There's a club on the fifth floor that runs until 11 most nights, maybe midnight on Saturdays...
