“Not at all worth the money we paid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We selected the premium upgrade and had many many issues with that, our premium upgrade was a complete waste of money, they did not have any real premium upgrade options. Most of the staff were friendly and tried to help, but you could just tell they had no options. the location was great and if we had not bought the premium upgrade it would of been an average hotel with poor drinks and medium quality food. I would not go back

Our King room was a room with 2 double beds, they said they could not accomodate us, although I saw the room next to us was a King and empty
there are safes in the rooms but they ran out of locks for them, we finallly got one the second day and our friends did not get a lock until the 4th day
they security lock on the door was broke off
the shower handle came off every time we used it
the food was very poor quality - no variety
the drinks were bad they added Fresca to every drink to fill up the glass
they "ran out" of premium tequila - we were in Mexico right?
They "ran out"of Kahlua
they "ran out" of champagne - even on Valentines day - they tried to make a mimosa with white wine
they "ran out" of irish cream
they only had one beer to offer and none of us liked it
when they cleaned our rooms they took the wash clothes and hand towels and then we had to go ask for clean ones
One day we put out the privacy card and they came in anyway and then just kept the card
they "ran out" of out of beach towels - they said "short on laundry"
Very small beach and the security staff did not keep the vendors out

We stayed at the Buenaventura from Jan 26 to Feb 9/13. While the hotel is decent I wouldn’t say it was a 4 star as advertised. We didn't pay a huge buck for our stay at the hotel so you get what you pay for. The location certainly is 4 star though! I would have give 3 1/2 stars for my rating however didn't have that choice and felt that 3 stars wasn't sufficient.
We were a bit dismayed when we pulled up outside as the front of the hotel is not overly inviting. Not at all what we’re use to in a Mexican hotel. The rooms aren’t overly large and not all of the rooms have balconies. The hotel is definitely showing its age and the whole hotel could stand a makeover to update the premises. Having said that, the 6 of us really enjoyed our stay at the Buenaventura. The rooms, lobby, pool area and beach area were kept very clean and tidy. There is always someone cleaning, sweeping or trimming.

The location is fabulous. It’s an easy walk to the Malecon from the hotel on either the beach side or the street side. We walked to the Malecon and back several times a day for the exercise. It’s a nice jaunt and we never once worried about our safety. We were not walking along the beach side after dark. One should exercise some caution.

The meals were typical all inclusive food. I’ve had way better and I’ve had way worse. I’m not a connoisseur of food but I always managed to find something to eat. Others in the group thought the lunch hamburgers at the buffet were very good but you had to make sure you asked them to cook them as they seem to like their hamburger on the rare side.

We did eat at the Brazilian Steak House restaurant and the Beaches Club restaurant. Both were fine however the service at the Beaches Club was very slow so sometimes your food was hot and sometimes not so much so.

It always seems odd to me that in Mexico Kahlua is not a part of their house brands. If you wanted Kahlua it was an extra charge. They did stock the bar fridge with water, pop and a type of beer that nobody in our group was remotely fond of.

The hotel staff were wonderful. They were friendly, accommodating and for the most part helpful. Do not expect to be able to get US $ change from the front desk. It was never available while we were there. But they’re not a bank so ok.

The fellows who brought the drinks to you on the beach were especially nice. They came by frequently to ensure you didn’t need anything. They were pleasant when you tipped and if you didn’t they still came back to see if you needed something.

We used 2 Mexican beach vendors named Martine and Pancho to book excursions. They always came over after we did one of their trips to ensure that we enjoyed ourselves and were quick to relay any info along if we weren’t thrilled about something that had happened on the excursion.

There’s a fellow, Sergio, who walks the beach daily selling bbq shrimp on a stick. My husband and brother in law bought one almost every day and neither had any ill effects from eating them. Feel free to try them.

The guests at the hotel are mostly 40 plus so it’s not party central. The mix is mostly Canadians with a few Americans and some local people on weekends. Many of the people we spoke to have been going there for many years.

If you are looking for the huge, extravagant, over the top Mexican hotel this is not the place. If you are looking for a smaller more relaxed place conveniently located to old PV then this hotel will work. We would stay here again.

Just got back from our 5th visit to this resort. The staff were awesome as always, the food was great. The rooms are very clean as are the grounds, pool etc. The location is fantastic, minutes to the Malecon. The best entertainment is the early morning towel game. I am usually up and around by 0530 or 0600hrs. You will see people who have obviously just woke up rushing out to mark their territory with a towel. I find it amusing that people on vacation will get up early to claim a chair. There are more than enough chairs for everyone. Is it really worth stressing out over a chair? Thanks for the laughs.

Room Tip: Third floor, with a balcony, closest to the beach

we stayed from Nov.10th to Nov24th,2012.the comments re size of the resort ,good staff are on the money.I disagree strongly about poor cleaning standards. The general manager is constantly on his staff and even pitches in when needed. Have you ever seen floor polishers used on concrete or the plastic awnings being scrubbed ? I haven't until this trip .A special thanks to Paploma at the concierge desk with a room change when our A/C would not respond to the repairs. Her cheerful smile and patience are a definite asset to guests .

We recently returned for our vacation in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. We have travelled there for many years and this year we decided to book our hotel for its proximity to the down town core. After spending some time reviewing many options, we chose the Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Spa. We were enticed by the beautiful views and accessibility of the Ocean, the amenities of the hotel and beautiful pictures of the resort. We upgraded our vacation package to the premier package. On our arrival, we were greeted warmly; everyone was polite, smiling, and very helpful. Our check in was processed quickly. Upon checking into our room we were very pleased, it was clean, well-stocked (coffee, towels and bar fridge) and the view were exactly as advertised. However…
For the next four days we had many issues with the maid, room service and cleaning staff and front desk. On our second day I requested coffee for our room, as the maid had not left any. I wrote it on the note pad supplied by the hotel with a hotel supplied pen. Not only did we NOT receive any coffee, the maid also took the pen. For the next couple of days I continued to request she leave coffee to no avail, we eventually purchased a pound of coffee from the OXXO store down the street.
After four days, I wrote another note to the maid (with a pen the front desk had kindly lent me) so she could PLEASE change our bedding and left it on the bed. I then placed the note pad under several other papers I had on the dresser, this time she went through our papers and took the note pad. We continuously had to call for face clothes, towels and a bath mat. We were always short something. She even went to the extent of re-arranging our personal bath items daily. Twice during our stay we actually received bath towels … at 10:30 PM!!!. The second time we were asleep when she continuously knocked on the door (which had a do not disturb sign on it) until we answered it. On Monday February 4th we planned a tour to San Sebastian, we requested a wakeup call because the radio alarm didn’t seem to work (turns out, the maid kept turning off the alarm clock) we NEVER received our wakeup call. We barely made our connection to the Vallarta Adventures office for our departure.
One of our biggest complaints with this hotel was the comfort of the resort. There was no comfortable seating at the pool area or resort grounds. There were loungers and hard bar stools only. Many of the vacationers there complained about the setting. At the pool and lounge bars we had to continuously remind the bar tenders about the premier liquor, although you could clearly see our black select bands. Which reminds me, the bar fridge in our room was stoked with 2 light and 2 regular local Mexican beer, not the premier alcohol beverages we thought we paid for.
We fully understand that you can’t please everybody, but this was totally ridiculous. During our stay we tipped the bellboys, waiters, maids, and bartenders well over $250.00 in U.S. currency, so we are not cheap. For the most part we are dissatisfied with our stay at the Buenaventura Grand Hotel and although we intend to continue our yearly vacation to Puerto Vallarta, I’m sorry to say that we highly doubt we will return to the Buenaventura Grand. Jorge & Alberto the waiter and Bartender were great, food was great... but if you want to relax and sit in a comfortable chair find somewhere else. This resort is NOT for older people.

Room Tip: Facing the ocean, not the alley.

Just got back from a stay at this resort. Absolutely loved it. Food was good, staff was fantastic and would go out of their way to get you what you needed. The location is awesome, just a few blocks to the malecon. I will be coming back in the future. The only negative i think there is, is that the beds are way too firm.

This was our 5th visit to the Buenaventura Hotel and Spa. The hotel is beautiful, excellent location, great beach. Paloma, Chief Concierge is fantastic. She was always smiling and she made our trip the best ever!!! When we arrived she came right around the counter and greeted us with a big hug and a welcome back home.
Jorge the waiter made us smile all day. He seems to really love his job. He would bring us drinks before we could even ask for another round. Everyone at the resort was so friendly. Our room was the deluxe ocean view and I could see the ocean and the palm trees before I even got out of bed. Great beach area! Very clean. The food was good, no complaints. But we did go out for dinner most nights as there are so main great restaurants and we had friends down visiting from Vancouver. So each night we would head out down the Melacon and venture off to different restaurants. Dinners are not expensive and the food was always amazing. El Brujo is a must, a bit of a walk but great food, and La Dolce Vita right on the Melacon.
Jorge Head of Entertainment always came by to say hello and made sure we were enjoying ourselves. The resort itself was very clean. We always had fresh clean towels in our room when we returned from our evening walks on the Melacon. The weather was perfect. Hot and sunny for 14 days. We may have had some clouds on 3 of the days. We love the location of this hotel out of all the hotels we have stayed at in PV as we love to walk every night into town to see all of what PV has to offer and it doesn't cost a thing. From fireworks to art sand sculptures and so much more.

Room Tip: The Deluxe Ocean View rooms overlooking the pool are fantastic. Our favorites. Cost a little more b...
