“Good value beachfront hotel in the Zona Romantica of Puerto Vallarta”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

This hotel was interesting, mainly because of the price that was surprisingly low for staying in the Romantic Zone. We had a suite hat was newly renovated at the 3rd floor of the hotel, with a direct and gorgeous view of the ocean. The room was very spacious and had air-conditioning. And yes, the beds were very hard. We had two big balconies, but could only use one because the other had the air-conditioning unit, which was emitting a lot of heat. I felt sorry for the others who had only one balcony with the air-conditioning unit on it. The hotel was very clean, and was under construction during our stay, but the noise started only late in the morning. The staff was very helpful with the restaurant reservations, but we felt that they were not very proactive for helping us. The other main quality of this hotel is the direct private beach (Los Muertos) with a lot of palapas. The staff was also assigned to help us by providing chairs, beach umbrellas and small tables. Food and beverages are not included and can be ordered, but we found the food too spicy. We felt that the emplacement of our hotel and the beachfront were better compared to the other popular hotels around and it was more quiet and calm. However, the locals and other families can still come in the front of this hotel on the public section transforming our beach day near a living hell between Christmas and the days after the New Year. Can you spell Annoying? It was indeed very loud most of our two weeks stay and I strongly advise anyone who prefer calm and wants to relax to avoid Puerto Vallarta or stay far from the center. But if you like to party, the Zona Romantico is the place. The hotel offers a breakfast, but it was borderline eatable every mornings. Moreover, we had to come early in the morning to make sure to have yogurt and cereal (the rest of the food was disappointing most of the time) because it went fast. Finally, the Wi-Fi offered in the hotel was very limited and only offered in the lobby. Even in the lobby, the Wi-Fi was hard to catch and very slow. We could barely speak on Skype or even surf the net depending on the number of people there. Trust me, it gets very frustrating. In conclusion, if you are looking for a place to stay in the Old-Vallarta, not far from the gay bars and near the Blue Chairs, you will get an hotel that worth the price despite its many flaws.

Room Tip: Insist for a Deluxe room with direct Ocean view if you can afford it.

We stayed in a renovated king superior room and it was basic, but great. The bed was super firm, the water wasn't always hot on command, but the location was perfect! So many awesome restaurants and shops and the malecon boardwalk is about 2 blocks away. There are a lot of vendors that harass you on the beach in front of the hotel, we went a little further south between the blue chairs and the seahorse statue and were rarely bothered....the bar there played ace of base and had 5 beers for 100 pecos! The hotel had 2 large pools, towel service, and a great balcony with an ocean view. I would definitely stay there again it's affordable and in the heart of everything!

The Tropicana Hotel is located on the Los Muertos beach in the Zona Romantica and is three properties down from Blue Chairs and in the heart of the historic district. As such, the location couldn't be better.

The hotel itself has a reasonable lobby area with WiFi (not available in other parts of the hotel), a beautiful pool area (although it would benefit with more areas of shade), dated rooms and beds that are hard as rocks. The hotel realy should update all the rooms with paint, new bathrooms, and new mattresses. That said the view from the balcony, which was large in our junior suite, is spectacular of Banderos Bay. In addition, the security at the hotel is onerous and unnecessary. Guests are expected to wear plastic tags on their wrists at all times. Any guest to the rooms also needs to get a tag and pay a $20 dollar access charge. This, to me, is unwarranted.

All in all we would not return due primarily to dated rooms, horrible beds, and onerous rules for guest access.

Room Tip: Suites have a small kitchen and a refrigerator which can come in handy but are considerably more exp...

Our second stay here was more than expected. We had a Junior Suite that had more than enough room. Two queen beds, a large shower room, a kitchenette, ample space and a huge balcony overlooking the beach and bay. Add on excellent service, superb. Any day at their beach should include lunch and drinks. Excellent service and very good fare. A very restful sleep to the sound of the waves.

Room Tip: Book a room facing west and enjoy the sunsets over the bay.

Stayed in a renovated standard king room. Was good value for the money, and had a great location with a view of the Bay. I had stayed in years past, and was pleased with the renovations!
The pool was great.

Room Tip: Choose a Standard King Room

We were very happy with our rooms, the service and the price at The Tropicana. We had a view of the new pier, and always felt safe. The pool with the ocean beach feet away is fantastic. No worries of all the beach vendors, yet easy access to the ocean. With beach service. Excellent cleaning staff with clean rooms. We were pleasantly surprised! Don't count on the Wifi, though. And we never tempted the food.

First let me start off I thought the Tropicana is in a great location. In PV, I like old town and being able to walk everywhere. If you are in the hotel zone or north, you will be cabbing. I don't come to PV to stay in a resort complex. To many great places to eat in town. The hotel is very clean, the rooms are average to basic mexican. Beds are VERY firm. It is right on the beach, right by blue chairs. I like the two pools. The ocean is nice but can be a bit rough at times so it is nice to have the pool option. The staff was friendly. You will have to wear a wrist band - for security. But always felt safe. Wi-fi not good - again was not an issue for me - I tend to unplug when I am in PV. I do like having a frig which our room did not have. I believe they have rooms you can upgrade to with a small kitchen. Yes I would stay again - but I know what to expect and I do love PV.
