“Not Sure.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Wow. This is THE trickiest review I've ever written for Trip Advisor. Here's how my recent stay went over 6 nights.

My partner and I arrived and were greeted by Orlando. PLEASE give him a raise! Not only was he efficient, but he was very helpful, extremely friendly and spoke EXCELLENT English. He was the best contact we had during our stay! He checked us in and we went to our room (#107). We were surprised to find the door OPEN, but we now know why.

It had a VERY strong smell of mold/mildew. I have learned a valuable life lesson: we should have said something IMMEDIATELY! After 2 nights, I finally spoke to Juan Carlos (another terrific guy...he also allowed me to print our boarding passes for the return flight!). He said that they could get us a new room, but we'd have to do it in the morning. So, we spent a third night in the room and by then my (and, to a lesser degree, my partners) allergies were really acting up.

I spoke to one of the managers (Dario...another great guy) the next morning & told him our situation. Within 1 hour, we had a new room (#208). WHAT A DIFFERENCE! As soon as we walked in, we could tell that there was no obvious mold/mildew smell. The only unfortunate thing was the bed. It was comfortable, but VERY small for 2 people (I'm 5'9" and my partner is 5'10", and we both weigh under 165 lbs., so it's not like we are large people). It made for 3 nights of not-as-good-as-we-would-have-liked sleep. At least the room didn't smell. Unfortunately for me, the damage was done. I've been home for 3 days now & my allergies are still bothering me and I'm convinced it's because of the mold.

I will tell you that after we switched rooms, they had the mattress and bed frame in the (adorable) courtyard. I don't know what they did or could do. As we walked by it (about 10 feet away), we could smell the mold! It was rather strong. My partner smelled the dresser and door when we were in the room and you could REALLY notice it then. Our guess is that with all of the heat & humidity, it just permeates the wood & doesn't leave. I would personally throw out the dresser and wash the room with bleach. It really was that bad.

On a more positive note, the location, in the heart of the Zona Romantica, was EXCELLENT. MANY great shops & restaurants within walking distance and only a few blocks from the beach. The attached restaurant, Fredy Tucan (only open for breakfast & lunch...review to follow this one) was EXCELLENT! Both of the A/C units worked VERY well in our rooms. Clean bathrooms (my "average" rating of cleanliness below had to do with the mold), no bugs (we had one TINY gecko in our first room, but it was fine). FIRM, but (to us) comfortable mattresses.

This IS a budget hotel with some good qualities to it. If, however, we were to ever go back to PV, we would look for another place. Hard to recommend with the mold and (second) small mattress.

Room Tip: Stay away from room 107 if you do go.

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your comments, we think it is important to mention that Puerto Vallarta is a tropical place that contains really strong humidity, when arriving to PV you will notice we are made up of this and can automatically feel it in the air. We are trying our best to get rid of this but as you may know it is something natural and it produces this smell. There are very few rooms that might get this smell once in a while and usually happend to the rooms on the first floor, like I mentioned before we are trying to get rid of this smell permanantly.

We also just got new mattresses in all of our rooms, each with different sizes but can try to get you one that fits your needs. The single bed is quiet small but the double bed is for two people. We also have king size beds. If you decide to stay with us once again we can definantly get you a mattress pad for extra comfort, you can always ask for these at the front desk.
We hope you give us the oportunity to have you back and experience our services in a much better way. We will get you the room that best fits your need!
Regards,

This was our first time staying at Posada de Roger and it likely won't be our last. The hotel itself is well maintained with tons of plants and flowers throughout. the pool area is sufficient if you aren't wanting to head to the beach. The room was a little tired and the beds the hardest I have ever slept on but despite all that the location and the price make it very worth while.

An amazing location, close to beach, shopping, bus and every amenity. A building with lots of atmosphere and clean rooms with all you need for a great stay. Helpful staff. This is a place with great value - don't expect a luxury suite - but a nice place to put your head down at the end of the day and a centre courtyard that provides an opportunity to meet others and a cool spot to take a break.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second and third floor have bigger windows. Main floor rooms are dark but cool. If you...

This was my 3rd stay at Posada de Roger - I come here twice a year. The rooms are very clean, and the staff very friendly. especially Juan Carlos, and Dario, who work at the front desk. Beautiful flowers surround the pool - everything is well kept and clean. It is in a perfect location, and only 2 blocks from the beach, close to nightclubs and restaurants. The malecon is very close by, plus you can walk everywhere instead of paying for a cab. I recommend the hotel to anyone, even a single person, as I am, as it is very safe. I will defintely stay here next visit.

A great location to many bars and dining places.Walking distance to the malecon with many things to do at night. Hotel is older, but very quaint with a great helpful staff. I stay there for night before I head down to Barra de Navidad. The bus stop is about 4 blocks away. Have never been disappointed.

Room Tip: 2nd floor by the pool is best

Through "MexVax", my stay at Posada de Roger came to $36.70 a night and represented good value. With most rooms facing the inner courtyard which is festooned with lovely flowering plants, the sense of traditional Mexican hospitality is palpable. This also means its generally quiet. The rooms are adequate if not opulent, and everything worked, for the most part (including the WiFi). Other than check-in and check-out, I did not have much contact with the staff this trip, but they seem to be pleasant and efficient. On check-in, expect to pay a small deposit for the room key and the TV remote, which is refunded on departure, in pesos cash. The refund about equals the taxi fare to the airport. For the truly frugal and those traveling light, its possible to entirely avoid the taxi scam FROM the airport and, for 6.5 pesos, take the "Centro" bus to about 50 feet from Posada's front door.
As has been noted, the location is ideal. Minutes to Los Muertos beach and tons of restaurants, and really not a bad walk to the Malecon. And there's a delightful panaderia (bakery) across the street which is not to be missed.

My family has stayed at the Posada several times, we return every year to be once again greeted by the friendly and welcoming staff. This year, the staff at Posada accomodated my cousins wedding party last minute and we were all very appreciative!! They go out of their way to ensure that all guests are well looked after.

This hotel is in a great location, just a couple blocks from the beach. The OXO is close by, (which is a conveninent store) for last minute drinks or munchies before heading back to the hotel for the night! There are a couple great restuarants within walking distance (no more than 5 minutes to each), may I suggest the following:

-Margarita Grill
-Pancake House (best place to eat breakfast!!)
-Blue Shirmp - (This place is a little pricier but has great food and an upbeat environment).
-Rive Cafe (Turn left towards Freddy Tucan's restaurant, then left at the corner. Walk straight and you will come towards a bridge. River Cafe has fabulous food and staff! It is truly a magical spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is along side the river and is close to the markets for shopping afterwards!)

The rooms at the Posada are kept very clean and tidy. The air conditioning kicks in shortly after you turn it on, which is great for when you feel overheated!! Also, the pool is kept very clean and is nice and cool, perfect temperature for an afternoon dip! There are lounging chairs pool side so you can soak up the sun.

The balcony rooms are a must! It is amazing opening the doors and watching the sun set, or taking in the culture by sitting on the chairs gazing down the cobble stone roads. :)

Overall, the staff is great, the rooms are well kept and cozy, and this hotel is in a great location, a safe and tourist friendly part of town. I look forward to returning. Enjoy!! :)

Room Tip: A majority of the rooms I have stayed in at the posada have balconies which has been great. I have r...
