“A great way to experience Downtown PV”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2009

If you are looking for five star amenities, this is not your place. This is right in the heart of downtown, but it is off on a side street so it is very quiet and restful. The pool area is beautiful...almost like your own private jungle, but it is quiet. It is a half a blocks walk to some of the very best sidewalk cafe's, and beach front resteraunts, and as others have noted, less than a one minute walk to the best beach at Playa Los Arcos.

Each morning, we walked around the corner to Cafe San Angel where we were served hot crusty rolls and a cappucino as we sat and watch the morning downtown bustle unfold on the cobblestone streets. Then we would walk the malecon to do some shopping, take in the ocean views and work off our breakfast. Then it was on to the beach...to enjoy a beachside margarita, a little ceviche, and a swim in the ocean...from their, naptime at our quiet hotel in our comfy bed. After naps...back to the pool for an afternoon swim and cocktail....then back to the room to put on our "evening wear"(sundress and flip flops for me) and then off to one of the many culinary delights that Puerta Vallarta has to offer. We ate like kings on a paupers penny at Daquiri Dicks, La Palapa, and even had some fantastic Italian at Espresso...all within a walk of our room and most right on the beach to dine while we witnessed incredible sunsets. If this is your style of vacation, than this is your style hotel. If fancy, superficial..americanized...is your style, wrong spot. :)

Alaska Airlines offered 2 nights at a low price. We stayed here after renting a private home (the home was lovely). The hotel smells like smoke and mildew, bare light bulbs hanging down in the room and in the hallway. Pillows stuffed with straw. Thin sheets that were scratchy. I understand the trick is to complain about your room, and get a better room. We didn't do that. We left after one night. I'd never stay here again. The only good thing is that Cafe Maxmillian's is nearby.

This hotel is not as bad as people say it is. It IS Mexico. You may not get a hotel room like you do in the U.S.. I am a college student, I was with family. The room was fine for the price. I found it extra convenient that it had a stove and a kitchen sink with a dishwasher. We did have to walk across the street to get to the beach but it was really no big deal-the beach is very close. And since there are the three sister hotels across from one another- we got to use the rooftop pool which was across the street in the other hotel which was BEAUTIFUL. I found the ambiance of this hotel very charming. There were no bugs, and the staff was VERY friendly. I would go back.

My teenage son and I had a great trip, first time to Puerto Vallarta.

We opted to stay in the old town and were not disappointed. We both wanted to have an experience of Mexico rather than a resort full of foreigners that could be in any country. My Spanish is basic but turned out to be unnecessary in the old town but outside of PV it helped.

When we arrived after a long trip our room wasn't ready (at 4pm). It took them more than 1.5 hours to get it cleaned. After that everything was much smoother. The hotel staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. Our first night we went out for Thai food nearby and later tried the excellent Chinese restaurant nearby and my favourite and cheapest is the Cafe Bohemio.

The hotel has got all the basics -- its clean, has got lots of hot water and is quiet. After the first night I got used to the relatively hard mattress by North american standards and slept easily and well.

Our room (108, which faces the pool) had a mildew smell as previous visitors had warned about, but it became better on running the ac all the time. Either that or we just got used to the smell. By the time we left, I hardly noticed it anymore. Actually the worse part of the trip was leaving!

The pool is quiet and shaded. We went in the afternoons to the beach (1 minute walk away), which was great -- and took some day trips as well. I really enjoyed the cafes, hanging out and meeting people in the old town. My son really enjoyed the waves and eating out at the variety of restaurants in the old town. I found the mix of people really interesting and made some friends as well. Its great just to walk out and be in the centre of everything. There were troops of dancers in the square nearby and the show on Friday or Saturday night was great.

For breakfast there's a good bakery around the corner to pick up some cakes and then get some fresh squeezed juice from a stand or go to the "House of Hotcakes" -- a real treat, or if you want a classy experience do breakfast, lunch or dinner at La Palapa just south of the Pier on the beach.

I would definitely go back. Its a good deal. We paid 800 Canadian for a week per person including airfare, hotel and taxes through hotwire.

Our conclusions about Los Arcos Suites are somewhat lower than previous reviews. Certainly a good location and it is generally quiet but the room we had (105) was pretty shabby. The sink was plugged (before we arrived) and took maintenance about 2 hours and 3 attempts to fix it. Air cons are very noisy. Also, the hotel tries to push you into buying food coupons which offer 20% off at the buffet at the sister hotel. Do not accept these as the buffet is poor quality and definitely overpriced. We tried once and refused any more. The suites refuses to refund your coupons even if you have not used any and it takes alot of arguing to change that and get the charge taken off your bill. There are better and less expensive restaurants all around the neighbourhood. The hotel is cheap but a few dollars more would be well spent at a different location.

Los Arcos has a great location right in the charming Old Town section of PV. Cobblestone streets, great cafes, beautiful beach, and you can walk down to the official "boardwalk" downtown area.

The hotel itself is a place to sleep-- it was clean and well kept-- but you don't want to be inside anyway! Rooms can be very noisy so bring some earplugs. Other reviews complaint about rooms being dirty-- it was just fine so don't worry.

Whatever you do, don't do all-inclusive. We would have died if forced to eat at the one lame restaurant every meal, esepcially with such stellar options just outside on the street. We felt sorry for everyone with the wrist band. Beer is less than $1 US so don't get fooled into the all-inclusive "deal."

Go to Cafe de Olla up the street for the best meal in town-- for about 6 bucks a person.

We have been spending our family vacations at the Los Arcos Suites for over a decade. Originally we chose the hotel because it is located right in the heart of the old town, is considered one of the safest areas for families and has almost perfect weather. In the beginning price was also a big factor. We have four children and always seemed to be traveling with extra cousins, friends, mothers and the occasional boyfriend. Obviously this required quite a number of rooms and the value of your holiday dollar goes along way at the Suites. All amenities of the sister hotel on the beach are available without the crowded atmosphere and the smaller somewhat cramped hotel rooms. There is a market six blocks from the Suites and it is easy to stock the fridges with breakfast and lunch items. There is a plethora of fabulous restaurants to choose from for an evening dining experience. The staff are splendid, courteous and quick to answer all questions about the hotel itself as well as the surrounding area. This past Christmas we took our children - now all grown college students - their boyfriends, my mother and our grandson down for our last hurrah. It was perfect. My husband and I are now looking to purchase a beach front condo as we grow closer to retirement but our children already continue in the family tradition of spending at least one holiday a year in Puerto Vallarta at the always welcoming and ever friendly Suites. A makeover would be nice - it has been a few years since the last one - but if you are interested in a true Mexican experience as opposed to a "resort that could be in any country anywhere because really they're all the same" this is the place for you.
