“BEWARE OF YOUR DEPOSIT!! Scam ALERT”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Just left the hotel rio malecon about 30 mins ago with the most horrible taste in my mouth. First, I will say that the hotel is in an incredibly convenient location with just a few mins walk to get to the beach, restaurants, ect. The rooms themselves are pretty basic with hard as rock beds for the standard rooms as many people have already mentioned before but then we come to the check out process..when we first arrived on march 3rd we were asked to put down a $25 deposit which was fine ofcourse..but what they didnt tell us was that while we were taking a nap in our room the next day the housekeeper would come in and take all of our towels..leaving us with none..shouldnt be a big deal right? Well when we came down later that night to ask for towels since we were going back out that night we were met with a confused stare as if we had asked something completely ridiculous..after a stare down for what seemed like a few minutes we were given one big towel..when there was 2 of us staying in the room with no wash cloths to either wash or dry ourselves off with. Fast forward to check out today march 5th..Andreas from the front desk (who was also the confused stare down guy from the night before) greets us with smiles and ask if we could please leave a good review on trip advisor which I wasnt planning on leaving and then radios to someone to check the room before giving us our deposit back. 5 mins later he gets a call back saying the towels are missing besides the ones he VERY reluctantly gave us the night before.....SHE TOOK OUR TOWELS WHILE WE WERE SLEEPING THATS WHY WE CAME TO YOU LAST NIGHT!! SUUCCHH a scam. He asked us what the housekeeper looked like as if that was going to solve the problem and be able to track down the 3 face towels she took from us while we were sleeping..this made absolutely no sense to me because before i knew it im hearing that his manager is saying we owe 300 pesos for the 3 towels....SCAM SCAM SCAM!! Sooo the housekeeper takes our towels while were sleeping and now we have to pay for them?? does this not seem waaaayy too convenient for them to keep our deposit? and all he can tell us is he understands our frustration and if it was him he would be reacting the same way but that "I just work here" what a joke. ive been reading reviews on trip advisor for yearsss and never felt the need to write a review of a hotel until this very unfortunate situation happened. Soo like i said the location is great but BEWARE OF THE DEPOSIT SCAM!! they will find whatever they need to to keep your money ESPECIALLY if its american $$ youre leaving it in which i guess i shouldve known better but who expects the housekeeper to steal your towels like a thief in the night so they could get more outa you? not me. i would NEVER recommend this place.

It's hard to find a truly modern, comfortable, clean hotel in the old district (Romantic Zone) of Puerto Vallarta. Quaint, yes. Historic, yes. Funky, sure. But modern? Not so much. And then you find the Rio. Just one block off the beach, a couple of blocks from the Cuale River, a short walk to the malecon, or the cathedral, or the plaza. The rooms are bright and clean, the showers awesome. The restaurant is one of the most talked about in Vallarta and the pool . . . Well, let's just say that the water is crystal clear, and there are no chemicals to burn your skin or eyes. Just salt water that is constantly changed and is less salty than your tears. Only downside is that it is completely open to the restaurant so if you like privacy for your swim, you won't be swimming here. On the other hand, this place is fantastic and right in the middle of everything. They even have special glass in the windows so while you can see the hustle and bustle of the street outside, the noise stays mostly outside too. The only negative is that there is no elevator for access to the two upper floors.

Room Tip: There are 3 types of rooms. All are good but I think best value is in the middle.

if you want to get off the hotel strip and get more of a real Mexico experience, this is a good hotel compared to others. This hotel is in a great location right off the malecon. we stayed in a newly renovated, superior room that had comfortable beds and pillows (compared to the typical mexico mattress). the hotel was clean. no frills, but friendly staff and a touch of the old part of Puerto Vallarta. try to get a room that is off the street since it is by the main street and the road sound from cars and busses bounces off the contrete.

This hotel is right on the Main Street of downtown PV. The location is great -- between the gay area to the south and straight bar scene to the north.

The staff is wonderful and speak English. The Coexist restaurant is also good.

The rooms can be a little noisy from the street traffic but nothing ear plugs can't handle. They're good-size rooms with hot water and air conditioning. There is no in-room safe but you can leave your valuables at the front desk.

You can get as much purified water as you need (using the provided pitcher in the room) at the Coexist restaurant for drinking/brushing your teeth.

I would stay here again!

By U.S. standards, this is about a 2 star hotel, but the service is excellent. The staff was incredibly helpful and attentive to any concerns or issues.

This place reminded me of motel chains in the U.S. The room was perfectly adequate, but not luxurious at all. The bed was without a doubt the most firm bed I have ever slept on, and I like firm beds. I actually slept well on it, but I'm guessing a lot of people might have a problem with it. The linens were quite worn. They really need to be replaced. There is a futon-like couch in the room, but I didn't find it useful for anything but a platform for my luggage. I would *not* plan on being able to sleep on it. The building and room is older, but well maintained, and the maid service was excellent. There was a nice-sized refrigerator for your own food (not stuffed with minibar stuff), a stove, and a microwave. I only used the refrigerator, which worked great. There was a small, tube TV mounted and hanging from the ceiling, but I didn't use it. There is street noise, but honestly unless you're really sensitive to it, it probably won't bother you. I was on the third floor and had no problem carrying my luggage up to my room, but there is no elevator, so keep that in mind.

I was visiting during NYE, so I paid quite a bit more than this room was actually worth. That's why I say the value was poor. But if you are going at time that isn't so peak, I'd feel comfortable paying $30-40/night for this place. It's located in a great spot, especially if you want to spend a lot of time in the Romantic Zone. It's a short, easy walk over the bridge and really close to all the clubs. If you want to go to the opposite side of the Romantic Zone, near Blue Chairs, you can take a 8-10 minute walk or grab a cab for 50 pesos.

We checked into the Rio after being extremely disappointed with the Playa Los Arcos. We found the Rio to be clean and a very good price. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The mattresses were hard. The location is a block from the beach and near many restaurants and shops.
