“Well worth climbing some hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We took two tours of Old Vallarta. The first was part of what turned out to be mostly a tour of a Tequila factory. However, a knowledgeable guide (Freddie) did start the day by walking us through the island and up to Gringo Gulch where we saw the homes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Our second tour was a free one that left from the City Hall and went through the northern part of the old town up to the lighthouse and past John Huston's house. Our guide had an extensive knowledge of local architecture and history, as well as oceanography! The view from the lighthouse is spectacular and worth the climb. Both tours included the Church of Our Lady of Guadelupe, which is definitely worth a visit. There is a second tour from City Hall that covers the island and Gringo Gulch.
Old Vallarta is well worth seeing and then visiting again. The free City Hall tours are only available on Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 and 12 noon, though.

“Must Do”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

There are so many all inclusive resorts in PV now that many people never see the real town. PV has so much to offer in old town; small shops, great restaurants, art galleries and a great beach.

“shop, eat, walk, enjoy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Great place to find all you want, like in any touristy old towns. I would recommend avoiding the flea market, every stall is the same stuff. The strip right beside the market on the "island" is kind of neat to walk through, but the better quality fashion jewelry and clothing are found in proper shops outside of there. Nice and inexpensive leather goods. We took the ATM bus to and from Nuevo Vallarta, change bus at Walmart -- a big landmark (perfect to stop off for groceries and board different bus). 14 Pesos from NV to Walmart. Local bus from Walmart into Old Vallarta (Central) is about 7 Pesos. Taxis would be about US$30 one way.

“Rustic charm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Treacherous streets but loads of atmosphere and many choices in restaurants and shops. Bargaining welcome. Not for the handicapped or anyone with a baby stroller.

“A cultural experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Great shops, restaurants, galleries and waterholes. Street vendors and barkers are friendly and respectful. We love walking about and experiencing the culture in Old Vallarta.
