We took two tours of Old Vallarta. The first was part of what turned out to be mostly a tour of a Tequila factory. However, a knowledgeable guide (Freddie) did start the day by walking us through the island and up to Gringo Gulch where we saw the homes of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Our second tour was a free one that left from the City Hall and went through the northern part of the old town up to the lighthouse and past John Huston's house. Our guide had an extensive knowledge of local architecture and history, as well as oceanography! The view from the lighthouse is spectacular and worth the climb. Both tours included the Church of Our Lady of Guadelupe, which is definitely worth a visit. There is a second tour from City Hall that covers the island and Gringo Gulch.
Old Vallarta is well worth seeing and then visiting again. The free City Hall tours are only available on Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 and 12 noon, though.
