I wasn't planning on doing any tours during our recent stay in Puerto Vallarta, but we decided to book this trip. Along with my two girls, 14 & 12, we booked this tour, having been to Xplor in Cancnun a couple years back. The night before we went, and the morning of we had some thunderstoms, but they cleared up a couple hours before we left. Staying at the Barcelo made it easy as they picked us up at the resort, and shuttled us off in a speedboat across the ocean (just under 10 minutes) until we came to a cove where they pick you up and take you up the mountain in an Mercedez Benz 4x4 Unimog. For the next 15 minutes you get a "mexican massage" up the mountain along with some great scenery of the area.
Once you arrive at the base, you are outfitted with a team of 6 guides. Ours consisted of Epy, Adrian, Arturo, Kut, Alex, and Robi. They did a fantastic job of leading, encouraging, and ensuring our safety throughout the excursion. We were paired with a group from Canada which ranged from10 years of age to over 65 (yes Grandma did the circuit!). They provided wetsuit shirts as you will get wet, and they give you a small towel to dry off at the end. Once your are completely outfitted all your gear they shuffle you off to the "mule" station. Here you will ride one of the 70 mules they have about 20 minutes up the mountain to the zip lines/rappelling course.
The first zip line is the longest and the highest across the ravine, (though they tell you it is a practice run...). My girls and I had done zip lines before and so this was no problem for us, but it can seem intimidating to some, but let me state that they use 2 cable lines and safety harneses to ensure the safety of the tourists. We found the course very exhilerating! Once you do the first one, you are definitely ready for more. Even the teenage guys who were a little unsure of the first zip line, quickly got pumped up and wanted more!
After a couple of zip lines we came to our first rappell down the side of a waterfall. I will admit my girls and I were a bit nervous having never done this. However, we followed the guides instruction and it was really fun. By the time we had arreive at the rappelling station the rain had picked back up. The rain was warm and it made the rappell a bit slippery, but nobody had any major problems getting down the rock. Everybody cheered on Grandma as she went down!
After a short zip into the water, you take a waterslide to the next station. Two weeks ago they added some suspension bridges which add to the fun, then it's on to a free fall rappel. Both rappells are 30 meters, very manageable, and an exiciting experience. After a couple more zip lines and a final water slide you are almost through with your adventure. Another 4x4 ride down the mountain, with a short stop at a tequila factory, and it is back to the resort.
This was one of the best tours they have to offer in Puerto Vallarta and I would highly reccomend it to anyone from age 10 to 70 in good health. A couple of things to note... bring a pair of older tennis shoes that are fine to get wet. You can not take pictures on the circuit (you can buy the photo package at the end), but you can take your camera up to the base camp and back for pics. Bring a change of clothes to change into after the adventure, and come prepared to have a great time. And for those of you who have never done this before, this is the best way to experience this type of adventure in a very safe environement.... don't regret not going.. I can't wait to go back and do this tour again!
