“Great value, great views, great staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2010

Located in the Los Muertos area of Puerto Vallarta, this efficiency apartment hotel is a great value. We had 2 newly renovated rooms which were clean and suited us perfectly. The beds are on the hard side, but then that's often the case in budget-priced hotels! the staff are friendly and helpful, the view of the bay is gorgeous and the pool is fabulous!

Although meals are not offered, it is an easy stroll to many, many restaurants and the beach!

My partner and our friend rented one of the two bedroom condos on the 7th floor and loved it. The layout was great (other than the smaller of the two bedrooms not having the sink situated inside the bathroom but rather in the hallway); open plan with lights of windows and light! An extra long balcony allowed us to grab some beer, liquor, wine etc.. and sit out in the evenings enjoying the fun at Blue Chairs (could even see some of the drag shows/strippers etc..). Sometimes we even managed to hit a few bars (got to see PV's first Mardi Gras!)

The service was terrific; the staff friendly and chambermaids did an excellent job. Tip well!

Our condo was tastefully decorated and as in another review we never had to shut our windows and turn on the air conditioning. The gentle breezes kept everything at a really nice temperature.

Hold on everyone. This was the best. Almost every morning between 9am and 10am we, as well as others from the neighbouring condo building would be floored by the shows put on by the mama humpback whale and her young calf breaching (diving) in and our of the water about 200ft off shore. Simply amazing. I would definitely recommened this hotel to anyone gay or straight of any age. The pool area is very inviting and friendly. This is not for rough partiers and is in an excellent location. Steps though but you get used to it and a corner store with all that you need just down the street. Close to the beach and bars (what more could you ask for) Take the daytime booze crooze with a certain female French Canadian and you'll have a blast!

My partner and I stayed at Torre Malibu in condo #703 over New Year's (12/27/09 - 1/3/10). We'll definitely seek it out for our next visit.

LAYOUT: Entry and bedroom are on east/uphill side. There is an iron security gate in addition to the solid front door, so you may leave your front door open while you're out or even at night. We felt completely safe with it open all night. Living room and balcony patio with large sliding glass door are on west/ocean side.

CHEERS: ***Amazing views of the entire bay and Marietas Islands on horizon, south bit of Los Muertos beach and spectacular sunsets. ***Sounds like the ocean waves are right outside the room. ***Fantastic breezes (we never turned on our A/C). Large pool and patio. ***Spotless room with maid service every other day. ***Spacious and open feel. ***Patio has tall table and 4 tall stools. ***CD sound system with AUX plug. ***75 channels on TV. ***Kitchen is fully stocked (blender, microwave, etc). ***5-gal bottle of drinking water available from office for $50 pesos (kitchen has tilting bottle holder). ***All lights have dimmer switches. ***King bed in bedroom and full bed in living room. ***Only 3 condos on 7th floor (most floors have 5). ***High floor = minimal foot traffic on stairs. ***Thick walls: the only sound from adjoining condos was maybe if a door was slammed. Otherwise, nothing from neighbors.

CONSIDERATION #1: MANY SOUNDS IF DOORS ARE OPEN AT NIGHT (NOTE: Our doors were always open enjoying the breezes and we chose to never use the A/C. Closed doors with A/C would eliminate most of them. ***Condo entry and bedroom on east/uphill side at ear-level with busy 2-lane highway going south out of town. ***Elevator is immediately outside door and bedroom and has a low hum when in use. ***Patio is on the west/ocean side and amazingly captures every possible sound (music from rooftop at Blue Chairs and a bar down the beach, dogs, beach waves, water fountain into the pool, cars and any loud voices from nearby hotels and street below). Most bar music ended by 10:30pm. The sounds heard inside Stanley and Stella's apartment in A Streetcar Named Desire are a good reference to how it'll be if you keep the doors open at night.

CONSIDERATION #2: MANY STEPS ***46 steps from the lower front gate to the pool/office level. ***81 steep steps if you choose to take the direct stairs from the beach/Blue Chairs up to the street in front of Torre Malibu. You can always take the street around Blue Seas for an easier path.

CONSIDERATION #3: Limited Wi-Fi ***We could connect our iPhones rarely and with a minimal signal only when we were sitting on the left, outside edge of the balcony. It wasn't available anywhere else inside #703.

My partner and I stayed at Torre Malibu for 10 nights in May in the penthouse. This was our 3rd year in a row and won't be our last. The views are excellant as well as the recently remodled condos. Suzzane, the manager, is perfect. She is there to answer any questions and the rest of the staff are professional and always polite. We tryed another hotel for the first nights but never unpacked our luggage until we arrived at BTM. This truely is a rare find in PV and I hope that others will soon discover it.

My partner & I had spoken of going to Puerto Vallarta numerous times over the years but had never taken the plunge, until now. To be truthful, PV was Plan D for our long weekend this month. We had hoped to visit Mexico City (read my review of 6M9 Guesthouse in Mexico City) until some damn pig sneezed and sent everyone into hysterics. Between airlines canceling flights and tourist sights being shuttered our plans for a simple weekend getaway were changed almost daily. When we finally decided upon Puerto Vallarta the choice for accommodation was rather easy as we had investigated our options several times over the years.

The Boana Torre Malibu (known on this site as Boana Torre, but known locally in PV as simply the Torre Malibu, Boana being just the name of the Real Estate company that manages the property.) was an easy choice. I e-mailed them through their website with a few requests, including a king bed, and a good ocean view for less than $80USD per night. Within a matter of hours they sent me a list of available units to choose from. One of the really nice things about their site is that every unit has its own page with a floor plan and photos of the individual unit. By way of description the Torre Malibu is a 9 story gay condo association (straight friendly) that rents out the privately owned units, therefore, each unit can be different in decoration, amenities and comfort. Most of the floor plans are similar, which include 1 or 2 bedrooms, 1 or 2 baths, a small kitchen and living area and a private balcony with a pool view. Depending on how high up you are depends on whether you have an ocean view. Our condo, unit 703, with its lovely pool and ocean view, was a very nice choice, you could tell that the owners took great care in planning their unit's look.

The front desk is very helpful and check in went smoothly. Deposits, payments and house rules are easily found on their website, www.boana.net, just make sure you have some cash when you arrive for all the deposits. You must leave a deposit for the keys, the various remote controls (TV, AC, etc.) and the beach towels. With all the cash-only deposits I'm a little surprised that one is not forced to leave a deposit just to insure the deposit! I found all the deposits a bit out of the ordinary, however, understandable. I'm sure over the years, lost keys, towels and remotes had taken their toll on profits and this was just a way to make the guilty party pays instead of passing on someone else's carelessness to other guests by way of higher room rates.

The pool is very inviting and the terrace surrounding it has plenty of tables, chairs and lounges. A vending machine, pool showers, toilets and hammocks are just a few steps away next to the office. The front desk is more than happy to book an array of tours, both gay and non-gay, and has loads of literature to help you plan your stay. The location is less than a block from the famous (some would say infamous) Blue Chairs seaside resort, with its accommodations, bar, restaurant and beach chairs. To get around PV you must be in fairly good shape, everything is either up or down a hill or an incredibly steep flight of stairs, that includes the beach! Our stay was at the beginning of the so-called "Value" season, it seemed to us to be more accurately called "Construction" season. Two units in the Torre Malibu as well as numerous units at Blue Chairs were undergoing renovation which included lots of jackhammering, banging, chipping and sawing. Not exactly peaceful during the day, but fortunately they don't start too early and stop just before sunset. You might call all the noise a sign of progress and improvement, but while noticeable, it was never really obtrusive.

On our last full day in PV the elevator went out. They called the repairman who had the unit up and running again by the time we checked out the next day. Climbing 7 flights of stairs was no fun at all in PV's heat and humidity, but it was a very good workout, something I should probably do everyday! Much of this section of PV is very hilly! If someone gives you directions, don't be surprised if they start by telling you that you'll be walking uphill in both directions! The Torre Malibu is located on the side of a hill. The back entrance of the property is on the 4th floor and the front entrance of the property is below the 1st floor down more stairs! A vacation and a workout all in one!

We enjoyed our stay at the Torre Malibu, we will recommend it to others, and if our travel plans take us back to PV we will definitely stay here again!

I booked Boana Torre Malibu direct on their website, without any advice or recommendation. I was traveling alone. I chose it because it is a gay-friendly hotel with kitchens, close to the beach but without the price. They offer a taxi service that I recommend if you haven’t been to PV. But I hired my own taxi.

Check-in was very casual and friendly. Although all rooms are nearly identical in layout, they vary in finish and floor. I believe I was “upgraded” to a higher floor. My room had spectacular 180 degree panoramic views. One floor lower and I would have only had a 90 degree view. If views are important to you, be sure to inquire about floor level. The room was actually an apartment with a large patio, living room, full kitchen, two bathrooms and one bedroom. The finishes were a bit rustic, but no complaints for the price and location. The bedroom was on the noisy street side of the hotel, as are all rooms. The bed was a bit hard, and pillows were flat. Thin curtains let too much light in at night. Since each unit is individually owned (and rented out by the management) conditions may vary. If you are a picky traveler, be sure to ask.

The property is on a hillside and there are many steps to get to the lobby. It is one block above Blue Chairs. If stairs are a problem you can take a taxi and arrive at the back side of the hotel which is level with the lobby. A nice large swimming pool is on the lobby level. I am in my mid-thirties and found the pool crowd to be a bit geriatric. For me, I loved it—no attitude and easy friendly conversation. This is NOT like the other younger cruisy sassy gay hotels in town.

All in all, I found this hotel to be an excellent value when considering price, size of rooms and location. Considering the price, I have no complaints or suggestions, and I would stay here again.

Very nice alternative condo/hotel. Great security, super nice staff. Very good price for the area and the rooms. It is a climb up the hill and then there are the steps. But for someone in good health, it shouldn't be a problem. I will for sure stay there again.

  • Liked — The two bathrooms in the condo was a nice touch. Plus the location was great.
  • Disliked — The climb up the hill. The noise from remodeling the other condos.
