“excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

A great place for a relaxing holiday. The best food I've had at an all inclusive( quite expensive if your paying out of pocket), clean spacious rooms, comfortable bed, good service from all hotel staff, beautiful beach and an excellent location for what we wanted. The only down side ts the pushy conciege spiel on arrival to get you to tour the Flamingo resort but as long as your prepared for that it's an excellent value .

This hotel is in the Hotel Zone of Puerto Vallarta. We did not take the all-inclusive deal. We had a one room, King bed, and small kitchen. We prepared our own breakfasts and some lunches. There are three restaurants, all of which are excellent. We had pools, tennis courts, and gym-all you need. El Centro was 15 min away by cab for 80 pesos. I would recommend this place. My only warning would be not to accept the 'free breakfast'. It is a time-share promotion that could take up to 5 hrs of valuable holiday time. Over-all, great resort.

Room Tip: Book around the quiet pool

This places was nice and very big for what we pay for.The room was huge and the pool area was wonderful. However, if you are looking for nice, warm, sandy peach, this is not the place for you. If you are look for a party place, this is not the place either. It was nice and quiet, family oriented. This works for me except for the beach area. The food was not good at all and very pricy. I guess it was target for americans, as most of the was not really typical mexican but a lot of pasta... fried food..

As per other reviews for this place on Trip Advisor, the rooms we stayed in were right on the main highway meaning really loud all the time. The carnival across the street and the loudspeaker system that came with it did not help the noise level at all either. We were booked under 3 rooms, and all 3 rooms experienced lockouts where our keys would not work (one of the rooms this happened 3 times during the 6 night stay). One of the rooms was also left unlocked after the maids as the deadbolt lock was left activated so the door would not close. My room had a giant hole in the ceiling and a door in the bathroom which led down a dark chute that I have no idea what its purpose was. The air conditioning in all three rooms did not work which made our stay less than comfortable.
Despite all that, it was somehow cheaper to rent a room for a night at the Villa del Palmar portion of the resort which was MUCH nicer and about a quarter of the distance from the beach, pools, or restaurants than it was to rent the same room again (~$100 compared to $290). When we switched to the Villa del Palmar room for the one night, the front desk failed to clarify which room we were to continue to charge our food/drinks to even though we had reached an understanding that the original room would be charged. This resulted in multiple confusions at the restaurants and bars throughout that day, and prevented any of us who did not share the same last name as the one paying for the room from signing off the bills.
On the other hand, the food was incredible at all of the restaurants for the most part. The Burlesque evening show put on at the one restaurant was positively dreadful, but the staff were always fantastic. At the El Patron restaurant, one of the waiters even took the time to dress up using bread baskets as "Mexican Spiderman" (who more closely resembled Captain America with his shield) so he could pretend to battle the little boy I was travelling with who was dressed up as Spiderman. All of the guests loved it, and having been to various parts of Mexico 4 times this year alone, it was easily one of the best moments of worker dedication I have ever seen.
The pool is fantastic, even includes a waterslide which the kids seemed to love there. The Bingo played around the pool daily was fun to participate in too. There seems to always be a very good-hearted water volleyball game played in the main pool which is entertaining to watch, however if you don't like being splashed, stay away. The beach is very nice, and does not have too many pushy vendors which is quite rare for Mexico.
All in all, aside from the rooms (which I would say opt to stay at Villa del Palmar instead of Villa del Mar), the experience was very good, and I would recommend the resort.

Room Tip: Villa del Palmar rooms are way better than Villa del Mar

We've been staying at Villa del Mar and adjoining Villa del Palmar for years. The staff are very helpful, attentive and friendly. The property is 20+ years old. The maintenance is top notch. The resort is clean and well kept. The gym is great, as are the outdoor BBQ's. Love the ceiling fans, as it means we don't have to use the air conditioner.

Room Tip: All of the maids do an excellent job. Each unit has its pros and cons. I prefer a unit with a full-s...

We look forward to our trip to Puerto Vallarta every year because of the lovely beaches, the short bus rides into town each night (which, by the way, pick you up and drop you off right in front of the Del Mar), and the overall feeling of security we have walking aound downtown each night. The people of Puerto Vallarta are great with tourists, Soriana grocery store is right across the street for all your needs, a fresh fish market is close by, the Del Mar is located very close to the airport and, most importantly, the restaurants close by are incredible (check out Cheeky Monkey for cheap beer and food, excellent guacamole and a great view of the ocean and sunset; Fajita Republic for "Fajita on the Rock" and strong margaritas; take a short taxi ride from the Del Mar to Teatro Limón and let Bruce prepare you whatever he's cooking for the night which, for us, included a starter salad you would write home to mom about, percebes (never heard of it? me either, but they were great), the best steak I've ever had in my life and a delicious cocktail called the "panty remover" using Liqor 43; and for the best view of the entire city and coast line take a15 minute taxi ride up to El Palomar de los Gonzalez and enjoy awesome cuisine).

Rhythms of the Night is a must see at least once, too, so dedicate one of your nights to it. See Juan on the beach for your tourism needs and he'll hook you up with a good deal, and make sure you get down to the beach early each morning to get your chairs as they get reserved quite quickly by everyone vying for front row seats to the waves.

Room Tip: If you can get a room on the 200 level floor of the del Mar you will get Martina as your maid- She...

If you're not comfortable with saying "No Gracias" to the abundant Time Share Representatives "Land Sharks" then this place isn't for you. But then, Land Sharks are prevalent in Puerto Vallarta so you're going to have to face them everywhere you go. This resort is a time share resort so there is a full complement of sales staff whose only job is to get you to purchase. They are stationed at the Villa Del Palmar lobby, the towel hut and the Villa Del Mar lobby. We even saw four separate booths on our exploration of Puerto Vallarta.

The Villa Del Mar Resort and Spa by Villa Group shares resources with the Villa Del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa and is truly only a set of four buildings of suites that surround the quiet pool. These buildings are the farthest buildings on the property from the beach with one building actually fronting the street. Truly the only downside to this is that you will not find a room at the Villa Del Mar that has a view of the beach.

When we arrive the hotel did not have our reservation however, when given a copy of our Bookit.com reservation, the front desk staff – thank you Patty -- found us a room that matched our booking. The room was very spacious, a bedroom with a king size bed, on suite, main bathroom, common space with a pull out couch, tv, kitchen table for four, stove top, fridge, sink and a deck with patio table and four more chairs. We were suitably impressed.

The resort winds down at 11 PM, with a posted quiet time between 11PM and 11 AM. As such many of the staff are done by 11 PM. Unfortunately for us, the building with their lockers was right across an alley outside our bedroom window and while I’m quite sure they were only speaking in a normal conversational volume and opening and closing their lockers normally the acoustics of the alley and the stairwell that our suites main doorway was off of amplified the noise making it difficult for us to get to sleep and waking us up early again the next day. Once again the front desk staff came to our rescue. No alternate one bedroom suites were available that day but they did offer to move us to a studio right away or to a one bedroom suite in two days. We decided to wait it out and we’re glad we did. The next two nights and mornings were much quieter and we got the royal treatment from our cleaning lady Martina who in addition to keeping our suite immaculate, well stocked with towels also treated us to some wonderful towel animals.

On the afternoon of our third day we moved into our suite, as with initial check in the room wasn’t ready for us upon our arrival. The upside to this was that we got to meet our new cleaning lady Mirabella. As we’d seen the previous occupant of our new suite singing drunkenly on his deck the previous night we were more than happy to simply sit on the deck while she finished cleaning. The cleaning staffs at this resort take their job seriously; Mirabella even had the fridge pulled out to sweep underneath/behind it. Our new suite was a bit smaller however, we preferred the layout. A large main bathroom was along the outer entrance wall insulating our bedroom from outside noise. The bedroom was more than big enough for the king size bed. There was a shuttered window (no glass) in the wall between the bedroom and the common area which gave the room an airy feel. Once again the common space was spacious with room for the pull out couch, table with four chairs, the stove, fridge and sink and a deck with a patio table and four chairs. The remainder of our stay was wonderfully quiet and Mirabella treated us to a wonderful assortment of towel animals in addition to keeping our room spotless and in fresh towels.

The resort has three restaurants – a seafood restaurant, an Italian restaurant and the sports bar -- and with the exception of the breakfast buffet and the buffets for the various night time events all meals are al a carte. Meals at all three restaurants were good but our personal favourite and go to place on the resort was the “El Patron” sports bar. Overall the food was good, as with any restaurant some dishes were much better than others. Our biggest criticism would be a lack of consistency, the same dish ordered on two separate occasions would close in preparation but not the same, and in addition items on the menu did not always come with sides listed on the menu. However, the staff is more than willing to bring you items from the menu prepared however you’d like and with whatever substitutions you’d like. Even offering alternate preparation to accommodate food allergies/intolerances – Thank you Adrian!

Food at the Villa Del Palmar is not cheap. If you’re not staying on the all inclusive a breakfast buffet for two and two bottles of water will run you 509.01 Pesos ($40.00). While that might not sound like much you can eat like a king in Centro or Zona Romantica for much, much less. If you’re at all unsure of eating off resort check out the Vallarta Eats Tour, not only will you experience some great food they will teach you what to look for in a street car or restaurant to ensure you’ll have a good meal at a good price.

The shows, despite their low production value, are entertaining and the “Animation Team” (entertainment staff) goes above and beyond to ensure guests of the resort are enjoying their stay -- a big thank you to Victor, Hugo, Jairo and Antonio for making “Happy Hour” truly happy by running the Donkey Races.

The sand at the beach is as good as any along the Hotel Zone but space on the beach is limited as the result of a volley ball court which dominates the space. In addition we found the beach area to be extremely noisy and as such retreated to the quiet pool in Villa Del Mar complex most afternoons.

The staff at this resort are fantastic and make up for any short comings while I’m quite certain I’m missing someone I’d like to toss out a special thank you to the following not for mentioned staff; Heriberto, Franciso, Adrian, Cesar Vargus and Cesar Monreal who all went above and beyond to ensure we were made welcome and always had something to eat or drink.
