“Mmm... sure it's great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2008

I tried to contact this hotel twice via their website and once by phone in order to reserve a room for myself and my girlfriend.

I had no response and no answer. Now booked else where, I have been to Mazatlan before and the hotel looks quite good from the outside.. it's a shame the response is a little lacking.

“Great Place-different experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2008

We loved he Melville. We went with 2 teenagers and another couple. The charm of this old hotel and the area of Mazatlan is worth visiting. It is in the heart of Historic Mazatlan and you can walk to great restaurants, coffee houses, margaritas and super good shrimp. The rooms are large, clean and comfy.

We also stayed in another hotel (resort type) and would have prefered staying at the Melville instead (sold out though). We would definitely return to this hotel. Enjoy your stay.

“A pleasant discovery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2008

Staying at the Melville is a very different experience than staying in the Golden Zone, but overall was a better one, I think. The hotel is only a block from the Machado, arguably one of the best features of Mazatlan, with a ton of great live music and restaurants. Unfortunately, you can also hear the bars and foot traffic in the rooms. The rooms have great art and kitchens (although ours was not fully equipped with utensils, it was rectified), although the bathroom leaves a little something to be desired. The sumptuous impression of the place doesn't extend to all aspects - the beds and couches are a bit hard, there is no longer a breakfast offered. Not things to condemn the experience, but if you are looking to be pampered, the Golden Zone will probably suit you better. The beaches in the Golden Zone are better too, although The Melville is arguably closer to the ferry to Stone Island. But don't count on the nearby Playa Olas Altas downtown for swimming or lounging, it's pretty windy and the waves are pretty intense. Downtown was fun for being near the market, good local inexpensive restaurants, and walking the historic streets without being hassled by storekeepers. We payed $120 for the double suite (the website is out of date).

  • Liked — The non-touristy atmosphere
  • Disliked — The owner's attitude

“Great place to stay in the old town of Mazatlan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2008

The "Zona Dorada" of Mazatlan is all well and good with its beaches, shopping, nightlife and what not but it doesn't give much of a feel of actually being in Mexico. For that I recommend staying at the Melville in the historic old town of Mazatlan.

The Melville is a well restored colonial style building with large, clean, comfy rooms, (Ours had a nice kitchenette and balcony as well) a charming courtyard, a hearty breakfast, friendly staff, laid back guests, and a fantastic location for exploring the old town of Mazatlan. If you are looking for a place to have your every whim catered to then this wouldn't be the place for you, but rather if you are looking for a place to call home while in Mazatlan then the Melville is an excellent choice. One idiosyncrasy that we found about the place was that in spite of a never ending parade of taxis taking tourists from the golden zone by the Melville's front door so that they could peek in on the fountain and courtyard, no taxi we took in a week had ever heard of the place. Odd to be sure.

It is two blocks from the Plaza Machado and all its beauty and charm and about an equal distance from the Olas Altas beach. There are unique and interesting restaurants, bars and galleries very close by. A few blocks further away is the cathedral and just beyond that the fun and bustle of the central market.
Looking to get away from it all....jump a 5 peso bus to the Playa Sur embarcadero and catch the 15 peso ferry to Isla de la Piedra(Stone Island). When you arrive, Walk straight up the pier, cross the road, go over the embankment, and you will find a fantastic beach stretching off into the far distance and wonderful beach front palapa restaurants. They all look good. I personally tried El Pili, Letty's, and Victor's and found them all nice with clean bathrooms, cold beer, and great seafood...and they can all set you up with atv or a horse if you wish to explore more of stone island.

All in all I highly recommend the Melville for an easygoing base from which to explore Mazatlan.

“The best place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2006

Like others before me I found this wonderfull oasis by accident. Local rental agents refused to mention it and I know why. Once you stay here and join the very clubby group for happy hour it's hard to consider any other place. Most of the Club Melville people go on to buy a house or an apartment nearby. Join the group on Monday at Canucks for jazz. The accomodation is upscale, the staff is courteous, the dining area is beautiful.
Pictures to follow.

  • Liked — Very upscale
  • Disliked — a small thing, Wednesday there is an exercise group, annoying.
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay for a month ot more.
