I had had enough of the Seattle rain for one lifetime and made a spur of the moment decision to head for Mazatlan, Mexico. Why Mazatlan? I'd visited all of the "resort" areas of Mexico (Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo) and wanted to experience a bigger Mexican city that still had a beach scene but was not 100% dependent upon tourism for its economic base. For that reason, I decided to stay in the Centro Historico in Mazatlan (the Historical Central area) and went looking for a B&B in that area.
I found the Casa de Leyendas, and boy, what a score! From the moment my cab pulled up until the moment I left for the airport, I had nothing but pure, unadulterated 100% fun. Glenn and Sharon Sorrie have resurrected a beautiful old Mexican villa and spared no expense in the process. The result is a beautiful, comfortable, modern luxury resort on a budget price. From the beautiful, comfortable room with 400 thread count sheets to fresh towels every morning to the complimentary high-speed internet access and free phone calls to North America, this place has it all. One half block away is the beach (and if you can't walk that far, you can head up to the rooftop terrace and watch the sun set over the Pacific while you swak down a Pacifico beer). Three short blocks away is the Plaza Machado (a big town square that is ringed by excellent restaurants and bordered by the beautifully restored Teatro Angela Peralta, the town's performing arts center). Two more blocks and you're at the Central market, which is another genuine Mexican market, frequented by Mexicans and gringos alike, and is another real treat and taste of authentic Mexico.
The beauty of staying in the Centro Historico with Glenn and Sharon at Casa de Leyendas is that you're in the heart of beautiful Mazatlan, ensconced in the lap of luxury, in a part of town that has Mexican neighbors and businesses, and which is unencumbered with all the drunken frat boy madness that is really what the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) is all about. (In my opinion, the Golden Zone part of town is worth a visit, but only barely -- it is gringo central and not at all the real Mexico.)
Long story short, if you're interested in visiting the best part of Mazatlan, Casa de Leyendas is the place to stay. I looked at several different places in Mazatlan while scouting out places for my parents' upcoming visit to Mexico, and Casa de Leyendas is the hands down winner. Glenn and Sharon have created an awesome place here, and I highly recommend it.
