We stayed at the Emerald Bay from March 1-8 all inclusive with another couple. The resort was billed by SunWing as a 4+star place, but was unlike any 4-5 star resort we've stayed at.
-food was great at both the pool bar, the bistro and La Cordeliere. Really enjoyed the Seafood night, Mexican night, Latin night and the Steak and Shrimp night. Breakfast buffet was excellent! We had a love affair with the bacon wrapped turkey hotdogs at the pool bar in the afternoon, as well as the shrimp tacos at the Bistro.
-grounds were nice, lots to see when walking around
-shuttle to town was easy to take, simple to catch the bus downtown from the other property
-never had a problem finding a lounge chair, lots of pools that were clean as well as the pool areas
-the staff were friendly and helpful
-room was clean, no complaints with the daily maid service
-having to give your room number every time you ate or ordered a drink. I understand that they are trying to track consumption but it was annoying when wearing the bracelet is already annoying
-total lack of anything to do at night. During dinner at the buffet restaurant on Tuesday and Wednesday there was a show which came as a complete surprise. Other than that the place was a tomb by 8 PM every night. Kelly's bar was open till 1 but not as hopping as you would think. Pretty dark to walk around the grounds too.
-The lack of amenities in the rooms such as water (we did find out you can get bottles from the restaurant and bar with your drinks) coffee (why have a machine?), robes, wifi and nicer toiletries.
-very slow check in and instead of a welcome drink you are directed to the time share table, which of course no one tells you is the time share table until you realize what the "welcome breakfast" is. We declined and were phoned in our room a couple more times during the week.
-those freaking blackbirds! I don't know what they could do about those but wow every night around 5 PM a huge flock of screeching blackbirds fly into the trees right by the rooms. Scary to walk out there-wear a hat!
-Limited food choices with only the 2 restaurants (open until 10 Pm), the pool snack bars (from 1-6) and apparently Kelly's bar later on. On our last night the 4 of us tried the lobster for 2 and the steak for 2 at Kelly's bar at an upcharge of $50US which was ok but not worth the price. The presentation was nice, the lobster was a tiny Caribean crayfish lobster with hardly enough meat for one person, Everything else on the platters were pretty much available on the buffet at one point or another during the week for no extra charge.
-No coffee to be found outside of the 2 restaurants, which were a bit of a hike in the morning from the middle of the complex. You could purchase expensive coffee to go at the Bistro-about $5 for 2 and it wasn't all that fabulous. Even the 2star resort that we stayed at in Cuba had coffee bars scattered around.
-It was definitely an older crowd.... there were a few families with young kids but for the most part we felt like we were in a really nice nursing home lol. I felt sorry for any young couples who might have wanted a livelier atmosphere since it was so far from town.
-although the staff were working hard to keep up, the grounds were getting a little dirty by the end of our week with random garbage on the walk ways and lots of plant debris that needed sweeping up.
-beach was uninviting even just to walk. Scattered garbage and only a few tents with loungers if you wanted to sit out there.
I would only recommend this resort to people who like a very quiet place to lounge around the pool at. With their grandparents. For the same money there are plenty of upper scale resorts that offer much more - like a free bottle of water in your room.
