“Family oriented but not for honeymonners”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2008

We are at the El Cid right now (bring your own laptop to ensure computer access!). I'm surprised no one mentioned this in all the postings I read but this is very much a family oriented place with lots of young kids running around. It's like Disney World meets Cancun, if you can imagine that. The rooms are nice, the food is good, the pools are huge, and the beach is great, but I wouldn't come here for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. It's often noisy at the pools with lots of kids and family games going on over a loud speaker. Also, our studio room contains 2 single beds forcing us to push them together every night. There also seems to be alot of younger guys seeking younger girls (hence the Cancun feel). Don't get me wrong, great place and price but if you're looking to leave the kids at home (like us) and have a romantic getaway, this isn't the place.

  • Liked — easy to get food and drinks
  • Disliked — just a loud ambience in general

Travelling to Mexico in April a bit off the beaten track, to Mazatlan where I was uncertain as what to expect.
Arriving in the evening when it was dark allowed us to arrive as if blindfolded. In the morning I awoke to clear blue skies, a fantastic view out to the ocean and the small Deer and Bird islands on one side and the maze of a golf course on the other. We were ther for 13 nights and apart from one foggy spell for a couple of hours the weather was in the high 80’s every day. Fantastic for April and just what I needed.
We were lucky to have a room high up in the El Moro affording us the great views from the balcony and with 4 fast elevators it was all so effortless.
With the El Cid complex there are three hotels and a country club linked together. This allows the freedom of choosing different pools, restaurants and atmospheres.
Throughout, the restaurants provided good food and plenty attentive staff. The restaurant choices were varied. There was traditional Mexican, Italian and a delightful Argentinean restaurant set in a Mediterranean style pool area. There is a mix of the timeshare owners and those like us on All Inclusive. There was more to do than I anticipated with plenty activities, excursions from a quite enlightening city tour to the water activities on the beach and of course 3 challenging 9 hole golf courses. Overall staying in the El Moro couldn't have been easier. The entertainment staff performed some spectacular shows in the evenings balancing the content to satisfy all the family.
Overall this was a very enjoyable experience providing the right mix of activity and relaxation. Well worth a visit.

  • Liked — Plenty of variety
  • Disliked — WiFi in rooms would be great

Resort - Probably the best resort in Mazatlan. Love the pools they have. Beach in front of hotel was okay, we went when there are jelly fishes that stung a couple of people. Parasailing, banana boat rides, vendor peeps avail.
Room- 23rd fl - elvators are small and shaky ride. small kitchen so u can cook save money, beds are kinda hard. We got couple bed bites. Stayed at a 2 bdroom - 2 beds in master, 2 beds in other rm and 1 couch/bed in living rm...balcony nice view, but dangerous....
Timeshare peeps - all over the place, if u want free stuff do a couple of timeshares....lol
restaurants - expensive as hell...careful where u go.
fish market - cheap lobsters and shrimps....buy it there and cook it in ur room.
supermarkets - theres one below the hotel or u can go to MEGA and take the pulmonia.
Activities - Deer island, stone island, aquarium ( sea lions can talk spanish)

  • Liked — Swimming pools
  • Disliked — Beds, bed bites and locals tryna rip u off.

Could make this story long, but I won't. The bad was that the beds were hard ( we already read that before we came) We had sofa sleepers to start with, BUT when my friend was in the elevator at the tower the cord broke on the elevator at the 4th floor, and she and a worker fell to the ground in the elevator. This was about a 20 min ordeal, and no one, NOT one person asked if she was okay, nor did anything. She had to go to the desk and ask if there was something she had to fill out. Then she went to the sales person on the time share and asked for the deposit back., and told them what happen. and share there Tower of doom she went threw. That nite when see and her husband got back to there room They had 3 chocolet covered strawberrys and a sorry note for any inconvence. Also The manager at the resturant down at ground level would not take our El Cid money when we asked to eat at that restruant. We had our short, shoes, and shirts on. I don't remember seeing a formal dress code posted. Management needs some training.
the Good. After the elevator fall they did move us closer to our friends on a lower floor. It was our 25the anniversary and the housekeeping decorated our bed with Hershey kisses in a heart shape and wrote congratulation in spanish with all the kisses on our bad, and made a certificate for us. That was so awsome cause they had just finished fixing our room. The waiters the whole time we where there were so nice, so fun, I really felt we made some good friends. WelI could go on. But the wait staff was wonderful, and the ladys in house keeping made our trip special.

  • Liked — wait staff and housekeeping
  • Disliked — beds, elevators, managments, front desk people

This was the worst experience I ever had,If you are in for a terrifying elevator ride and don't mind the impact of falling 10 to 12 feet to the ground in a elevator with no acknowledgment from the hotel staff this is the place to be.
The thing was, I was treated like I made all this up and no follow up was done. I thought to myself does this happen all the time and thats why this traumatic situation was treated so poorly. I was glad this wasn' t an expectant mother and elderly person or a child that would have to go through this. I have never been so frightened in my life and hope this never happens again to anyone.

We booked this through the Alaska Airlines Vacations website, it offered some great discounts. Overall, it was a great value for the money, especially for the all-inclusive deal. For some of the detractors, if you are paying hamburger prices, don't expect filet mignon quality!
My wife, my three year old son, and I spent six nights there and we loved it. Be sure to make reservations at the various restaurants. Their system is a bit strange, but the Argentinan and sushi restaurants are a must.
The rooms could use some renovating and the service speed is typical Mexican, so don't expect the same efficiency you may get back home.
There is a nice, shallow pool right next to El Moro towers that our son loved. It's a bit deceiving because there's a big sign that says "VIP only" but I asked the security guard and he said we can go there.
As you would with almost every other resort type places in Mexico, just be sure to say "no" to the timeshare offers. It starts early right when you get past customs here.
One thing to get ready for, however, is that the crowd is mostly domestic Mexican tourists. This could make some Americans uncomfortable because most of the pool activities are in Spanish, and the shows are almost all entirely in Spanish. (They do make an attempt to put English in there, but with the accent and the fact that most of the crowd is Mexican, it's hard to comprehend).
But if you go with a relaxed attitude you'll have a great time there.

Beautiful resort. Wonderful view out the room and the restaurant had great food. Breakfast buffet was good. Our room had a sweeping view of the pool and ocean, and we left the doors open all night and slept with the ocean sounds. The beach area was a little difficult to get to from our room and took a while. No real access to the ocean without being on the sand, which was alright. We were in another hotel where the restaurant and pool were pretty much right on the ocean. The timeshare pressure was a little much, they kept calling the room. I would stay there again in a heartbeat though.
