“Great Family Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2010

My wife and I spent 14 days (Apr 5-19) with our 2 young boys (13 months and 3 yr 10 months) and found this to be a really great family hotel. We were upgraded at no charge to the "elite club" which gave us free wifi internet, free use of the fitness facility, discounts at the spa and wine/fruit/snacks were delivered to our room at no charge. I'm sure there were other benefits as well but we weren't really sure what they all were as we seemed to get the same all inclusive perks as the other guests (we were given black wristbands while other all inclusives had purple). We asked at the front desk what else was included but never really got a straight answer. We did end up paying a bit extra to ensure we had an ocean view room.

Either way the kids had lots of fun. We spent more time at the pools than the beach - only because our oldest didn't like the waves (the water was a bit rough). We didn't find the beach vendors to be as big of a problem as others have mentioned and found that if we said no once, they didn't come around a second time.

I recommend parasailing - you can get in the air for $25-30 US if you are willing to negotiate a bit. We also took a trip out to Deer island. We didn`t take part in the snorkelling, kayaking or banana boats since our boys were too small to do the activities, but the lunch they provided was excellent. Be sure to say hi to Sebastian. We also decided to check out the aquarium (both boys loved the sea lion show) and take a trolley tour (a bit long for the kids, especially having to spend 45 minutes at Diamonds International).

We found the food at the buffets to have a decent variety. They offered a different theme each day of the week and had a different show each night as well. We didn`t get the chance to watch much of the shows as they started at 830 and the boys were usually both out by 9. We also tried out a few of the other restaurants - be advised you will need to reserve a table at least 24 hours in advance. The only real complaint we have about the dinners is that they didn`t start until 630 and our kids were used to eating at 5. Adrian, Luis and Angelita always went out of their way to ensure we had a great meal.

Our oldest liked to spend a little time each day in the kid`s club. They would play games, make crafts and even take the kids swimming and to dinner if you wanted to. There were always activities going on in and around the pool for the entire family.

Overall we really enjoyed our time at this resort. We met a lot of other families who had been coming for years and we are already planning our return visit. The only concern were the open railing in the hallways and the balconies. . If you are bringing kids, ask to be placed below the 15th floor if you are staying in the highrise tower.

Dear tjjackman

We would like to thank you very much for your wonderful comments that are really the best compliments for all of us and we are really proud. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and you liked the hotel.

We were delighted to read you thought Adrian, Luis and Angelita were helpful and that buffets have decent variety. Our staff is always on hand to assist our guests in any way possible. Our buffets and restaurants are quality controlled daily.

Thank you also for your positive comments regarding the kids club. We know that planning a trip with children is not an easy task and we try to do our best to make things work.

Our staff works exceptionally hard to make every guest feel special. Thank you so much for staying with us, we hope to see you in the near future.

Sincerely,

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2010

We were down and stayed a week April 10-17 and found all to be pretty good. We usually travel to the eastern Mexican coast for the snorkeling and diving so didn't even enter the ocean as not to disapoint ourselves here. With the package price we got with WestJet from Winnipeg direct we thought we couldn't go wrong though.
Food - Having tried all the restaurtants we were impressed overall with the food and had no issues. Booking reservations was no issue and ate twice at the Mexican and Argentinian. I ordered side orders of shrimp at both and were excellent.
Entertainment - Was a little on the down side compared with most other resorts we have stayed at but was still allright to pass the time at night.
Room - We had booked a pool view, but were upgraded to king ocean view and found everything to be good. Excellent sun sets from our 4th floor balcony.
Only complaint would be for the size of the resort at night there is only the loby bar open for drinks and a place to go so were pretty limited unless you were going to leave the resort. But after a day in the sun and an excellent supper and drinks it was time for bed early anyway.
We had no issues with the time share people and actually took part in the El Cid one to see what it was about and get 2 free tours. After 2 hours of breakfast and a condo tour and then there 3 person gang up spiel we said no thanks and were on our way with our 2 trips.
Getting around the city was easy, either by the city bus or the palmaro cabs. We hicked up to the top of the light house, not an easy walk probably for some but well worth the view when you make it to the top. A walk down the Malacan is also a nice long walk.
We walked a few miles in both directions from the hotel along the beach, some broken down buildings in parts along the way but a nice walk. The vendors on the beach were also no issue if you said no thanks. If your not interested then don't even bother looking as they will think your interested if you stop and look and then be after you to buy.
Overall it was a nice trip to get away from work for a week and we were glad we tried the west coast. Having been our 7 trip and we still haven't returned to the same place as we still have a few places to try yet before we return any where, I will not rule out a return trip to Mazatlan and the El Cid!
The complainers are just that "complainers" and will find things wrong were ever they go. Trips are all what you make of them, enjoy the new culture, sun, sand, food & drinks as next week your back at work wishing you were still on holidays! Thats my moto anyway..

We normally stay in 4 plus star resorts so this was definely a down grade. Many of our group have never been to an all inclusive resort and really enjoyed their stay. The price we paid was great but we found the rooms were not very comfy or kept very clean but the staff was very quick to correct the problems. The food was good in the ala cartes as the main eating buffet was loud and super busy. The food was at best okay in the main buffett.

Positives: We upgraded to the Elite Club and received some perks like canned beers and speciality drinks. We could eat anywhere and have room service at no extra charges. We didn't have to pay for bottled water and the beach service was very good. Elite members received free internet in the Club Elite office but everyone and their dog was going in to use the computers so they were hard to get on. When we complained about all the little kids coming in and using the computers to go on face book when we had payed extra for this service they gave us free wireless for the week (we just happened to bring our laptop with us). We are not sure the Club Elite was worth the extra $400/2 people. We ended up using room service the last few days as it was very good. We also ate out he last two nights of our stay as we found some very good restaurants nearby. Noe was very helpful and could get you anything you needed (bellhop). Our upgraded room had two double beds but we had requested a king size bed so they quickly found us a room right on the ocean which was very nice. The pool area was also very nice but was showing some signs of wear and tear.

To make it a better stay; The vendors were constantly harassing us on the beach in front of the hotel. We are beach people since we can sit at a pool anywhere but the ocean is a long way from were we live. Normally at other hotels the vendors were not allowed on the hotel property but it was hard to carry on a converation with out some one coming and pushing something in your face. We are normally very tolerant understanding that the locals need to make money but after the same person asking 20 times before noon if I need a massage it does get tiresome.

There was also a lot of hidden cost that we were not aware of for some of our group that didn't upgrade. They had to pay for bottled water and for food at some restaurants. This was a surprize as we had not seen this posted anywhere. It took them a couple days of for everyone to figure out what was going on.

The location was good for the younger crowd as we were not far from the party zone and it did carry on back to the hotel which happens when you go to Mexico.
This was a very kid freindly resort and we were okay with that but the pool area was far from relaxing which is to be expected. Many of our group would go back but as far as my wife and I, we would stay elsewhere.

We really enjoyed our trip to the El Cid. We were there on our honeymoon and received a free upgrade to oceanview when we arrived.

I read all the reviews here before selecting this resort. There were a few negative comments - but really, you have to take them all with a grain of salt. We paid $850 each for AI for a week. It was a great deal! The beach vendors were okay. They are trying to make a living too. We bought some stuff from them and were happy.

The food was good. Not many people realised that there is an a la carte restaurant for breakfast and lunch down by the middle pool. There were only a few people in there each time we dined. I would recommed eating there to get away from the buffet.

The Italian restaurant was our favourite. We went there three times. We are both huge sushi fans....but this restaurant is the only place we would not recommend. The service wasn't the greatest and the food was about the same.

I would also suggest people bring lots of magazines if they lik to read them. I couldn't find anywhere to buy English magazines and I had run out.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay. It's great value, lots of fun and the service is fabulous.

We stayed for a total of 5 days (all inclusive). Our first time in Mazatlan, it is a beautiful place. El Cid is a nice place except for a few problems. The first was problems with the pool view room we stayed in. We had a light that would flicker on and off (like a strobe light)
very annoying. We called the front desk about it but got no results... we called again the next day and no results. We finally showed a housekeeping maid the problem and it was corrected. The other problem with our room was we could not get on our balcony due to a broken door lock. We called about it and same thing ... no results. It was corrected on the 3rd day. TV was fine until day number 3. For some reason their dish network went down and we received only limited channels.
The beach was nice but after day 2 they had a front loading bulldozer moving sand. It was very noisy and interfered with our relax time. One day it actually was moving sand at our feet just in front of the roped off area. Service was overall good except at one dinner at the Mexican restaurant. We left before receiving our dessert and coffee because we waited so long. Our stay could have been much better.

We stayed at El Cid Castilla from April 12th to 19th. We are regulars on the AI circuit. Though we did bring our 4 ½ year old son for the first time this year.
Flew with Westjet Vacations direct out of Vancouver. Everything went smoothly. Westjet rep was standing just outside of security and directed us to the bus. No timeshare sharks to be seen. Check-in was smooth, and was upgraded to a tower room 8102. The lower floors on the Castilla have a better balcony in my opinion with regards to safety. The wall is solid and comes up about 3 ½ feet. The higher floors have some gaps and may worry some parents. The info desk asked if we wanted to go to the presentation and we said no firmly and they did not ask us again all week. The resort did not seem overly full which was nice.
Loved the a la carte restaurants. Just dial 3332 on your phone and book your dinners ahead of time. We had no problems getting reservations. We thought the Mexican was the best. Went there for almost every breakfast and two dinners. Never seen Lobster on any other AI menu before. Italian and Argentine were both good as well. We stayed away from the Sushi restaurant because of the reviews we read. The buffet did not look that great but with 3 good a la cartes to pick from we never had to eat there. Had lunch overlooking the beach on the Castilla side a lot. We walked down the beach to Panchos one night and had a great meal there. Also went to Te Amo Lucys downtown and had an amazing lunch of Shrimp Chile Releano’s.
We spent most of days at the Moro pool. Our four year old loved the small water slide and the rocks he could climb by himself. He made many friends around the pool and they would entertain themselves while the parents sunbathed and looked on. The resort we found was extremely child friendly. Nobody seemed to be bothered by having children around. Real mix of people staying there. About ½ Canadians and ¼ Mexican and ¼ American. Lots of seniors and singles as well in the mix with everyone getting along.
Mazatlan seemed very safe. My wife took the Centro bus a few times by herself to the shopping district downtown (in daytime) with no issues at all. Everyone was extremely helpful. We both went to Mayan Massage and had a very relaxing 150 peso one hour massage. We took the Centro bus again to the Stone Island ferry dock and the walked down the beach to Lety’s. There we had my favorite meal of the week. Coconut shrimp with a pineapple salsa. It was so delicious. There were two cruise ships in that day, the beach was busy but not overly crowded.
We went to every nightly show. They were a lot of fun and the dancers are excellent. My four year old begged us to go every night. They have a different cocktail every night at the entrance which was nice. Having a Catholic Mass on Sunday right in the resort was very convenient. One improvement I would suggest would be to have small fridges added to all rooms. We did ask for one to be rolled in but Customer Service said it was not possible.
Yes the resort is not perfect, but you are also not paying Sandals prices either. When talking to a time-share owner on the Moro side, he was told they want to change Moro, Castilla and Granada all too Time Share only suites starting in September and have no more Hotel guests. Also he said they are going to be closing sections of the Moro pool starting in May to have it all retiled like the Castilla side pool.
Don’t drink the bottled water left in the room (they will charge you) the pool bars all have cold bottles to give you. Make your reservations. Tip your waiters and maid. Go to a few outside restaurants for a different feel. Lots of great ones to choose from.
Wife and son loved Castilla so much they now want to book for two weeks next year.

We just returned from a week stay at El Cid Castilla and I must say it was an extremely positive experience. It was our first all inclusive vacation. The staff were fantastic. They treated you well from the moment you step into the hotel. As we were waiting in a line to check in, refreshments were brought for guests. Service from that moment on was amazing. The staff were so attentive and if they could see that you were needing help, someone would take the initiative to approach you to see if they could be of assistance to you.

The hotel was always clean and the staff seem really happy to work there which indicates that it's well managed. There was a representative on hand on the main floor to book tours if that is what you want. Otherwise, if you just wanted to stay at the resort, you could lounge around the pool or on the beach and staff will come and offer to get you drinks. You never have to get up except to eat! If you don't feel like sitting down at the restaurant, you are permitted to bring your plate to the beach or to the pool area and enjoy your meal there. When you are relaxing on the beach, you will be approached many times by peddlers hawking their wares. Just be polite and say "No, gracias" and most will simply walk away. We kept in mind that these people are just trying to make a living as the average wage for people who live there are about $5 to $15 a day.

One of the hiccups of the trip is when we made reservations at the sushi a la carte restaurant located at the el cid country club three days in advance. The day of the reservation, you need to get a ticket from the information desk to present to the restaurant. We went to retrieve the ticket and we were told that they could not find our reservations. After ten minutes of phone calls and explaining when I made the reservations, we were told that the restaurant would accept us for dinner. The other issue we encountered was when I tried to spend a 500 peso bill that was given to us by the hotel when we exchanged money. I was at a store in the mall and was told they could not accept that bill because it was counterfeit. I returned to the hotel and told them what happened. They checked the bill under black light and used a highlighter to mark the end of the bill and they told us that the bill was authentic. However, he was gracious enough to offer to break that bill into smaller bills if I was more comfortable with that.

In all, I would recommend this place to anyone. You are steps from the beach and ocean, the tours we did were great (we did the Country Tour by Pronatours and Konanahe Boat Tour through El Cid), the swim up bar and bartender were exactly what is needed on a hot day and the staff were consistently helpful and courteous. You get tons of value for your money and the most relaxing vacation you could ask for.
