If you’re staying in Mazatlan on a budget I would stay at an El Cid. Castilla is the most child friendly by far, but I understand you have access to the facilities at all 3. I have only stayed at the Castilla so this review is on the Castilla. The resort is not new, but it is not terrible either. Just don’t expect everything to be brand new looking or fancy and you will be fine. Food and service is fine for an AI, and (as is expected) service will get exponentially better when you tip. Always bring your own insulated cup on any hot vacation for daytime as the cups are small, wasteful and the ice melts very fast! Animation team tries very hard but is not too ‘in your face’. Great location to wander and try out a couple of local places (popping in for dollar-beers along the way), take advantage of the free shuttle to El Cid Marina if you have an excursion that leaves from there. DO try a restaurant or two off-resort, they will be memorable meals/experiences with several drinks for about $15US per person.
This place has the best boogie-boarding I have ever seen, but be careful if you have children as in the words of my husband ‘I am pretty sure my ankles flipped back and hit me in the ear once or twice’. I spoke with a friend who stayed at the Hotel Riu Emerald bay and they were bored as they could not go into the water at their location so I was very glad to be at the El Cid. As long as you are not expecting a 5 star (or even a 4) things are fine and I would definitely stay here again if I was on a budget vacation.
Watch out for the time share people when you are first checking in! Grrr! If I WANTED a timeshare I would find one! Also, charging for water in the rooms is unacceptable.
DO read the daily paper the resort puts out. It explains how the restaurants work (can be confusing), and the daily activities.
Tip: Find a taxi driver who speaks relatively good English (many do, shouldn’t be hard) and pay him $50 US or so to take your family on a city tour. Much less expensive and waaay better to be in an open-air taxi enjoying the sights and information, pulling over for pictures at your leisure rather than being stuck in a stuffy van or bus! They will even stop for drive-thru beers if you want . Ask your driver for restaurant recommendations, I have never been disappointed.
