“Entertaining at Emerald Estates”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

We just returned from nine happy days at Emerald Estates at Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay. Although I have been visiting Mazatlan for thirty three years and have stayed in various hotels, condominiums and even a penthouse, this is the first time that I could comfortably entertain guests at "my place." I invited a family of five for Sunday afternoon which mandated I provide food, comfortable seating and entertainment for a range of ages from eight to seventy.

In the fabulous kitchen we had the equipment to cook a variety of dishes and complemented that with specialties of the Suite Service. The delivery truck brought a delicious pasta dish, tasty pizza, drinks, and a gorgeous and very delicious cheesecake and other desserts.

The seventy year old had a very comfortable sofa and the eight year old had a swimming pool and jacuzzi for entertainment. After swimming there were cartoons on the new television. (There's also CNN, Fox News, and HBO.) The teenagers, ages 14 & 18, practiced their English with us and used the new computer in the villa to answer their questions about the U.S. "Just where is Oklahoma?" and "How big is the Statue of Liberty?" So I vote for applause for the owner of Emerald Estates for the four new televisions and the computer with free WiFi. My IPad even worked here, as well as my Great Call Jitterbug phone. I was able to call other Jitterbug phones in the U.S. directly.

Entertaining at the villa was delightful. So were swimming, relaxing, cooking, watching movies, sleeping late, ordering dessert from Suite Services, and enjoying the beauty of this stylish, clean, quiet villa, showering in the beautiful bathroom, and easing muscle pain in the outside or indoor jacuzzi. There were lots of amenities at the adjoining spa and hotel but I couldn't bear to leave the villa.

Room Tip: Any of the villas is a slice of Heaven. Ours is #37 next to an empty lot at the end. I loved the hug...

We have been owners at Emerald Bay since they first opened their doors and we now own 4 weeks of time in an Emerald Estates Villa which tells you we love it there. A really nice feature is when you arrive, you are taken to a special building just for checking into the villas and no longer have to check in at the main lobby with everyone else. The villas are not so close together that you can hear everything your neighbors are doing and they have landscaping that provides even more privacy. We also enjoy having the privacy of our own pool/hot tub and BBQ, all facing the golf course which is currently a driving range while the actual golf course is under development. We don't enjoy going over to the resort pool, even though it's bigger, and having to put up with cigarette smoke, splashing kids and loud activities. Plus the lounges with umbrellas always seem to be taken unless you're at the pool at the crack of dawn. Now we don't have to worry about it. The resort spa and gym are world class and with the two resort delis on site, you don't have to run into town if you need something unless you want to.

We always invite friends to join us and everyone has their privacy with insuite bathrooms. There is a guest powder room as well. We enjoy having a washer/dryer and full kitchen although we don't choose to cook that much. After all, this is my vacation time. I find the living room furniture more comfortable than other resorts I have been to. Our villa is 2500sf and has a carport if we rent a car. A computer is provided in the master bedroom with wireless service throughout the villa. Maid service is daily, but we usually have her come in once or twice a week only and if we need something we call them. They are very accommodating to whatever you request. We always need a shower bench which they provide and they have constructed a wheelchair ramp to our villa when a friend, who uses a wheelchair, visits. We didn't even have to ask. It's nice to be pampered for a change!

For the most part, we enjoy the restaurants on site but we do love to go off the property to our favorites: Chili's Pepper, Shrimp Factory, Ponchos and others. Don't forget to visit the movie theatre at the mall near Mega Foods. It is the nicest we've been to anywhere in the world and two people can see two movies and load up on goodies, all under $20 total! Most movies are in English with Spanish subtitles.

Now for the negative news: stay away from Residence Club La Jolla, the resort located next door [just beyond] Emerald Estates! Everyone who works there is in on one of the biggest scams I have ever encountered. They have been ripping people off for years and getting away with it. They say whatever they have to in order to get you to buy a membership, even offer to buy your Pueblo Bonito [or other] timeshare weeks in order to free you from the annual maintenance fees. They do not and will not buy them, they just say they will, take your money for their membership and even if you figure it out the next day after signing a contract, and go back to ask for a refund, they will NOT honor Mexican law that provides for 5 days right of rescission. They thumb their nose basically and say too bad! Do your online research before buying any timeshare in Mexico. If we had done ours, we would've found thousands of pages of complaints online about Residence Club La Jolla. We made the mistake of believing everything the four different people we dealt with at La Jolla said and lost several thousand dollars with nothing to show for it. Even though we came to an agreement *in writing* to receive a partial refund, they have simply cancelled our contract as well as our membership with Holiday Systems International. We're still trying to get our money back 8 months later. If you find yourself in a situation such as ours, please contact Fernando Alaniz, president of the Mazatlan Timeshare Association at falanizc@gmail.com. There is strength in numbers!

Room Tip: If you stay in the resort at Emerald Bay, try to get a top floor unit to avoid loud footsteps above...

This was our second year at our Villa at Emerald Estates. Their Villas, service, and amenities are unsurpassed anywhere! VVe were greeted at the airport by their friendly staff and shuttled directly to our Villa at Emerald Estates, which was pre-stocked with our favorite foods and beverages! Our Villa consists of a private carport, enclosed patio with fountain, huge living room/dining room/full kitchen/laundry room, with the entire back wall of glass sliding doors that glide away to reveal our private outdoor, individually temperature adjustable patio/pool/spa and view of the golf course (currently a driving range, as the rest of the course is still under construction). Three bedrooms, each with their own spacious baths (and a jacuzzi in the master!), plus a bath off the living area, (yes, that's four baths in total!), huge flat screens with cable/DVD in every BR and the in the LR! Complimentary flat screen computer with internet, and daily maid service. It is attached to Emerald Bay Resort, where we owned a Junior and Master Suite for 7 years (since they opened EB!), before upgrading to our Villa - as soon as it was available! The Resort offers incredibly manicured grounds with Greek inspired statues (a great wedding spot!) and a host of indoor and outdoor restaurants/delis for every taste and style (with an incredible wine steward and an international selection), an awesome Casa Blanca-styled lounge complete with exotic animal trophies and a very talented pianist, swim-up bars overlooking the ocean, more infinity pools than you can count (one pool and spa is devoted solely to adults!), organized activities, i.e., water exercise, aerobics, tennis, driving range, cooking, wine tasting, towel folding, paper flower making, ceramic classes, babysitting/day care center, discounted tours, complete spa (with separate lady's and gentleman's areas including indoor pools/jacuzzi's plus co-ed gym, and most important to us, it is completely secluded and continually guarded, without public access to the grounds. VVe always feel completely at ease and very pampered there! Even though they offer other locations in Mexico that look just as wonderful, and a policy that "once you own at one, you own at all," we just cannot tear ourselves away from Emerald Bay Resort and Estates and our "second" family there! Best Regards & No Regrets, Carol & Al
