The Casa De Marlin Lodge located in Mazatlan Mexico is the worst place I have ever stayed at. Four of us (two couples) arrived New Years Eve and changed hotels mid trip, leaving on Jan 6. It was worse than primitive campsites, with those you expect the hardships. When a lodge is as expensive as this one was you tend to expect a few amenities.
That is not the case here. The experience was intensified by the presence of the owner and host, Mr. Rodney Cavaungh(sp?). Rodney is extremely unpleasant and negative about everything. From our arrival in Mazatlan I knew we were in trouble. He complained about the number of bags we had, conveniently forgetting that one bag was full of supplies for him. When asked for restaurant recommendations or bars to party in he responded with only one restaurant. And he refused to recommend any bars saying he was in the fishing business not the bar industry. We finally arrived at the lodge. Only to find that it is his house and his wife was expecting a baby at any time and he had two huge dogs. GREAT!
Barking dogs and a crying baby-just what we wanted on our vacation. The guest quarters consisted on two rooms- 1 with a king bed and the other with 2 doubles. Each room had a private bath but the bath for the king room was located down the hall from the bedroom. The rooms were of adequate size and each had a tv and a/c unit but had a funny odor-like they needed to be aired out. There were cobwebs on the lights and dirt in the corners. The other couple we were traveling with elected to stay in the king size room and found that it was already occupied by roaches!! Their bathroom had even more problems-the first time they tried to use the shower- the shower head flew off and water went everywhere and the lid of the toilet would slam down unless it was held in place. Their shower also had a window open to the outside with no privacy. My husband and I counted ourselves lucky as we laughed at their predicament. Until we discovered that we had no remote for the tv and our bathroom lacked cold water. I had to ask the maid/cook for toilet paper and finally got it later that day. Maid service consisted of making the beds and emptying the trash, no sweeping or wiping out the sinks. The tropical beach garden was really where Rodney let his dogs out to potty and contained two filthy mismatched lounge chairs.
The swimming pool and hot tub were dirty and totally useless zero room to lay in the sun. The guys figured out how to make the hot tub work so after we filled it and turned it on Rodney appears. He is upset that it is on and tells us to just notify him 5-6 hours before we want to use the hut tub and he would turn it on. No matter what we asked that hot tub was ice cold whenever we wanted to use it. There was no choice of what to eat, you got what Lupita cooked or eat elsewhere. There was no choice of what time to eat. He advertised water, soft drinks and beer-what a joke. And he complained about the amount and kind of beer we drank-no bottles were allowed, only cheap can beer. You had to go up a set of stairs to get to the kitchen and if it was after 9-10 pm a loud buzzer would sound off. As for keeping beer stocked he had a six pack for 4 of us! We had also booked a two day fishing charter with this man. The 1st day, the boats water pump froze up when we were about 20 miles off shore. The second day, while we did get to fish and my husband caught a nice sailfish, the captain about ran out of diesel and cheated us of an hour fishing. On Sunday, while the guys went fishing while us girls moved the luggage to better lodging. Rodney reacted with the now expected attitude. He said that the El Cid Mega resort was a sh_ thole and he repeatedly asked why we were moving. I finally told him that we wanted a place with a real beach and real pool and close to real bars. The El Cid is beautiful and very centrally located. Unlike his place where we had to hike a ½ mile to catch a taxi. He refused to give me my husbands card that recorded the details of the sailfish he had released back into the water. So who knows if we will ever get a certificate of the fish. We are filling complaints with the conservation committee regarding his fishing charters-no life jackets, no live bait and no record of tagged fish. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! We really enjoyed ourselves after changing accommodations.
