Stayed at the El Cid Marina hotel a week in June 2004 - had a great time - 4 adults - 2 kids. Loved the entire El Cid Resort. Weather was perfect. When you land at the airport in Mazatlan you will be hit up immediately to sign up for time share breakfast presentation. There are numerous ones - we actually did one the next morning at the El Cid Marina. When you are negotiating with them at the airport about what you want in return for sitting thru presentation make sure they put it all in writing on your paper. Make sure it specifies the # of adults and or # of children who receive "free/discount" items. This is very important and will save any questions after the presentation and they give you the coupons. It is carbon copy they keep part and give you part. We got our 60$ van/cab fare, 2 for 1 Fiesta, free boat/island tour (boat was Kolanahe that leaves right from El Cid Marina) and a free City tour. We loved everything we got - especially the Boat tour-(if you do the boat make sure your "free" coupon includes not just boat, but ALL activities - otherwise you find out you have to pay extra for bannana boat and snorkeling, etc.) .
The timeshare presentation itself was not bad - we listened about 45 mins. - said NO and got our coupons. These are coupons and NOT the tickets you will need for the Fiesta or Boat tour. When they are giving you the coupons go ahead and book what you want to do right then with the person giving you the coupons- do not wait - then you just have to go redeem your coupons for the actual tickets. The Kolanahe you do at the Harbor Master Office right at the El Cid Marina (make sure it includes ALL activities). For the Fiesta tickets you go to the El Cid El Moro and there is a little office just above SEnor Frogs to go get your tickets.
Another reason we liked El Cid resort is that the El Cid provides free shuttle between all 4 El Cid hotels. This saved a lot on cab fares. Taking the shuttle down the strip a little further to other El Cid properties got you closer or w/in walking distance of plenty of restaurants, etc....
Stay away from City Market in Old Mazatlan - very, very dirty and they are unrelenting on the tourists. This was our least favorite part of trip.
Best part of stay was boat tour on Kolanahe - this leaves El Cid Marina around 9:30 am and returns about 4 pm. Open bar for entire trip - full lunch at Deer Island. Kids did bannana boat, snorkeling, etc.. LOVED IT. Take a travel bag with sunscreen, towels, camera, etc...
Kids liked the pool at the El Moro better than the Marina - more going on - Marina is more relaxing - has a GREAT cave at the far pool - kids liked. Food at the pools was good - drinks too. Lots of 2 for 1 drink offers in the afternoon. At the El Cid Marina you will have LOTS of Iquanas that stroll up and want food - pretty fun.
Have to agree that food at El Cid Marina just OK - there is lots better out on Main Drag - recomend the Purple Onion - very good. Also La Casa Country - GREAT -
Will definitely go back again.
