“For the Resort Crowd”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

Not to my taste for very long. There are great restaurants and resorts. Not for the budget minded.

“Kinda cheezy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

I didn't feel terribly safe around there as a tourist, though nothing actually happened. I felt better away from the tourist areas. it was sort of ugly with the hotels strung along the road. nice water though. soldiers and cops with big guns around.

“Why go in a second-zone Cancun-like place?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

There is nothing to do in Zona Dorada except going to the movies or play tennis. Or maybe visit the totally kitch seashell store. Otherwise, Old Mazatlan is THE place to be.

“too touristy-loud-overbuilt”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2012

Mazatlan is an old (1500's) interesting city with art and culture and many nice beaches. I've stayed in this area twice with family at time shares-it was fun and comfortable to stay at a resort as a group, affordable because the units have kitchens- But otherwise if you want to party, and drink by the pool great, go here. The beach although its long and lovely is crowded with pushy sales people, the time share sales are the worst... its not a peaceful experience, except early in the morning. This area does have a few redeeming qualities: Some of the resorts have nice pools and its fun to go see them and order a fancy drink at a swim up bar. Panchos is worth a dinner at sunset, the jewelry store next to Panchos is really nice with quality pieces at a good price,if you barter, same with a few other places in the same complex, one has nice Huichol art....but that's about it. Stay away from Royal Villas which has nothing royal at all about their service...some suites have nice big patios though...Holiday Inn is my favorite as its small with a nice pool and sweet staff. If you want to feel like you've barely left the US and you like to be entertained every moment of a trip-this could be a pick-otherwise stay in the El Centro part of Mazatlan and take part in some local culture...take a skate on the Malacon and go to the golden Zone for an afternoon, see the dentist, and the pools and leave.

“Lots of timeshares”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

Be prepared to be inundated and pressured to buy a time share. From taxi drivers, to street vendors. Everyone wants to sell you a timeshare! Was enough to keep many visitors in the confines of their hotels.
