My husband and I went to Mazatlan from Jan 17-21. We booked with Apple Vacations on a last minute deal. We were very pleased with everything.
After reading previous reviews, when we checked in we asked for a quiet room. We wanted to avoid the noise factor from the restaurant and Joe's Oyster Bar. We were given an absolutely wonderful room, right on the ocean. The only sound we heard each night was the waves crashing on the beach. The room itself was very spacious and clean. We asked for a mattress pad after the first night, and housekeeping promptly brought it. I've stayed at lots of mexican resorts, and without exception, the beds are ALWAYS hard. The pad made the bed very comfortable.
The pools were never, ever crowded. It always bugs me when people "reserve" chairs around the pools or on the beach, and then are hardly ever there. No one seemed to do that at the pools, which resulted in natural turnover of users for the loungers. We always had multiple loungers to choose from. We did notice that people DID reserve a few chairs on the beach. One morning, I started reading a book on the beach at 9am, and by the time I left for lunch at noon, I NEVER saw the people/persons who had saved the entire cabana, come use it! Very annoying.
The restaurant has a great breakfast for $100 pesos ($10 dollars) which is all you can eat. It's not super extensive, but nonethess the chef is there to cook your eggs to order, they are making fresh waffles right there, and a nice lady is making fresh corn tortillas. It was good. We had breakfast once at Panama, which I didn't like. My food tasted odd. It was kind of like Dennys. For the money, the hotel breakfast is the best deal. Lunch was okay - nothing spectacular, and we only ate there once or twice.
We always went out for dinner. I highly reccomend Panchos. The food was superb. The best fresh red snapper I've had in a long time.
The Mexican Fiesta ( on tuesdays and saturdays) was great. The show was wonderful. Lots and lots of other people/tours start pouring into the hotel to see it. The food was good. Not spectacular, but good nonetheless.
Overall, our stay at the Playa Mazatlan was great. I was amazed at the number of people that had been coming to the hotel for 20-30 years. There were tons and tons of retired couples who were there for a lenghtly stay. If we go back to Mazatlan, I would recommend this hotel. The location is good, and the property itself is good as well.
