“WOW!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2010

Just returned from a week at the Riu Emerald Bay. What a magnificiant resort! I went with two girl friends, it was a blast. Don't pay more for an ocean view room, there are only ocean view rooms. The food in the main buffet was awesome. Lots of selection, delicious and authentic Mexican food. I think anyone could find something to eat on this buffet. There are three restaurants on the resort but we didn't get to them. We really liked the buffet. If you get a chance to get off the resort, head up the beach, there is a restaurant that servers 2 for 1 Giant drinks and a full lobster and giant shrimp for cheap. It was the best food we had. We also ventured into town to a little place call Margaritas. It was also very good. Patricio and Tony were amazing. They serve a dish called Kahlua Shrimp, giant prawns stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon, covered with a Kahlua sauce.

The resort was really clean. The maids do what I was calling Towel oragami, it was awesome. The bars were pretty good. The drinks were strong. When we arrived, the resort was predominantly Canadians and Americans. The resort was not full, didn't need to fight for a lounger by the pool or a table in the restaurant. There must have been a locals special because closer to the end of the week, there were a significant amount of Mexicans. This made the service level at the bars change. Bartenders helped the Mexicans and ignored you if you weren't Mexican. But overall the service was fantastic and the staff were very friendly. My only complaint would be the amount of children in the swim up bar pool, I think they should restrict what pools children are allowed in.

I would definitely go back. But there wasn't much in the way of singles, mainly couples and families. We met some awesome people so that wasn't really a bad thing.

Was at the Riu March 1 thru 7. The hotel is beautiful. Beach is excellent. Everyone works hard cleaning all the time. We had a great view from our balcony, room 1237. The food is the only downfall. We have had better at all inclusives but there was always something good to eat. You can walk for a couple miles along the beach. Lots of seashells, saw a whale and dolphins many times. Will definately go back.

Our family just returned from a week's stay (March 1st- 8th) at the Riu. I agree with previous reviewers that said the hotel is more like a 4 rather than 5 star. The rooms are adequate with large bathrooms(double-sinks), bar fridges stocked every two days, and ocean view balconies. The pools, beach area and grounds are beautiful with plenty of chairs for everyone. The buffet offers a wide selection, but like most all-inclusives it does get a bit repetitive by the end of the week. We did not try any of the restaurants based on previous reviews and the opinions of other guests who went and were disappointed. The hotel is kept very clean, and we found most of the staff friendly and helpful. All this being said, I would not be comfortable recommending this hotel due to safety/security reasons. The second evening of our stay before heading down to dinner we left our Apple itouch charging in the bedside wall outlet. We foolishly assumed that it would be safe as staff had no reason to enter our room in the evening ( this hotel does not offer turn down service). We made sure the patio door was locked, turned off the lights and secured the door as we left. We returned to our room 3 hours later to find the lights on, closet doors wide open( the safe is located inside the closet) and our itouch missing. Upon further investigation it was apparent that someone had gone through all our belongings taking our daughter's Ipod Nano out of our luggage. We understand that unfortunately theft does happen whether at home or on vacation. What is most disappointing is the staff response to the theft. I realize that we were negligent in that we did not lock up these items in the safe, but I feel that the hotel should be held responsible for the staff that they employ. Although they have no record of anyone entering our room besides us that evening and no evidence to the door being tampered with, it is obvious that someone did enter our room either with a master key or a copy of our room key. As I explained to the hotel director, it is lucky that we only lost things that are replaceable, what would of happened if our teenage daughter had gone up to the room alone(as she had wanted to do) and came across someone routing through our room? What then? The hotel did offer to move us to another room, pay for a taxi to take us to the police station in Mazatlan, and dinner reservations at any of the restaurants. We took the room, but declined the taxi- we had no desire to waste a day of our holidays in a police station- and dinner reservations. All we wanted was to get our stuff back...

My wife and I enjoyed a one week vacation at RIU Emerald Bay which began on February 14 and I really must say that we found most of the negative reviews unwarranted.

We are open-minded travellers who vacation for fun; we've been around the all-inclusive block and we've stayed at several RIU hotels....we were married at the Palace in Cabo (delightful) so please take this seriously: The only negative issue we experienced was with food quality. It was sub-par and disappointing compared with many hotels in the same "star" rating and price class. We found ourselves exploring restaurants in old Mazatlan and as a result experienced many wonderful evenings.

Having finished with that - the hotel, staff, view, pools and drinks (with the exception of wine) is lovely. Management and staff are well suited to creating an enviornment condusive to fun.

As a special note, the Renova SPA is quite good.

ENJOY

We returned from a week at the RIU and we wanted to say thank you to the staff of the RIU for bringing in the Gold medal hockey game as this channel is not normally part of the regular television line up. This effort showed us they are truly customer focused and this effort was appreciated.
The room was clean and great ocean view and we found the bed very comfortable beat any other RIU beds we have slept in!
The ala cart restaurants and food was not the best we have experienced however certainly edible
The drinks were fine the wine is quite poor so if you are a wine drinker take note.
Service was fine.
Take note of the stairs the tile does trick you into thinking you have finished stepping down when in fact there is one more step.

No complaints.

I loed the Riu Emerald Bay. Everything was new and clean. The check in was quick and painless. Our bags were brought up to out 11th floor room. We had a wonderful view of the ocean & the pools from the balcony. The rooms are not huge but a good size. Love the double sinks. I wish they wouldn't give you the shampoo & conditioner in little packets. But not a big deal. The fridge was kept stocked. Housekeeping did a good job cleaning the rooms. We do leave tips for housekeeping and the people who stock the fridge daily.
The food- I loved the buffet. Lots of variety and good food. No not authentic mexican food but still very good. I liked the asian restaurant but it is also buffet. It's fine for us who have little kids but not if you were looking to have a nicer sit down meal. The mexican Restaurant was also good. but again only your main dish was brought to you the rest was buffet style. Service was great at all the restaurants i visited. (didn't get reservations to the steak one) Some of the service people even remembered us and knew what we liked. They were very accomodating. One night they had a mexican fiesta on the beach. They had a buffet by the beach with different frilled food. That was the best. really enjoyed the show afterwards as well.
The drinks- Were good but i'm not really a big drinker so I only had a few drinks each day. They do give them to you in small plastic cups so if you don't want to keep going to the pool bring your own thermo cup and they will be glad to fill it with your drink of choice,

The entertainement-nothing spectacular fro the nightly shows but shoud not be expecting broadway shows. They work hard and we had lots of fun. My kids enjoyed the daily kids disco they had. Sharo who takes care of the kids in th kids club is wonderful with the kids. My son can't wait to go back. He really liked the disco. He is 5. The entertainement staff also has different games etc going on durign the day you can participate.

Will definately be planning another trip back. I loved mazatlan the beach in front of this hotel was nice. My kids love building sandcastle. The vendorts on the beach did not bother us too much. Once we said no they did not keep insisting.
