“Beautiful Sunsets every night!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

1st of all our week vacation was great! Great weather (no rain), ave. temp. 29 degrees(C) daytime and a little cooler in the evening (light sweater) to start, but did warm up throughout the week. Rooms are spacious with a fantastic view of the beach, ocean and sunsets! Most reviews previously are pretty accurate but some additional info.: Toward the latter part of our week the local Mexican families checked in, because this was the start of their spring break. No problems after all this is a family resort. You can exchange your Canadian $'s at the front desk. Most places in Mazatlan will accept Canadian $'s but exchange varies, with some places giving us U.S. $ for change. The resort has a great little gift shop (hassle free) for last minute gifts or to get an ideal on prices for gifts before going into town. Great restaurant / vendor next to resort (5 to 10 min. walk from the beach) with great/cheap prices. The resort does not provide a lot of information regarding local restaurants or shopping unless it is on tour or has some connection. Best source of information available is to talk to guests who have stayed previously or earlier in the week.(they are the one's you are tanned). Take a step back into time and shop the Golden Zone (bargain for the best price) or you can shop at the MEGA store (12 min. taxi ride from resort) which is similar to the Loblaw's Superstore. Close by was the La Grande Plaza (disappointing) since most stores available offered clothes for the ladies and the rest were closed (11:00 am) or out of business. From there a short bus or taxi ride there is a Walmart (good prices for your Liquor). Regarding food / meals at the resort, good selection and tasted good. There was a better selection on the week-end including a BBQ Beach Party on Friday evening. I thought there would have been a larger selection of seafood at RIU but next time I would go to the local restaurant during the week for steak & seafood. Also at the bars at RIU in most cases the better quality RUM/ Liquor is available if requested. Also for the 1st. timer the Mazatlan City Tour which left from the resort was a good place to start then later we took a taxi back to continue shopping. The RIU resort is in a area of Mazatlan which is quiet and secluded. The local people are very friendly and most speak some English. This is a nice resort and I can understand why people return. I would!

Room Tip: If you are looking to upgrade to a Honeymoon or Jacuzzi room prices were higher at resort compared t...

We arrived late at the Hotel because of Plane delay. Not their fault so not included in here. But when we arrived. Everything was organized. It took minutes to get our bracelet, to get our room key and they had people with drinks and hors d'oeuvre. Took all the stress away.

we arrive in the room and it was beautiful, clean and frankly PERFECT. We were on 14th floor and the view to the ocean was FANTASTIC. After we took a few pictures we unpacked, showered and changed. Right away we went to the buffet and I frankly cannot complain about the food. There was plenty of it and it was tasty.

I just loved the way we were treated for breakfast. That was my favorite meal of the day.

Everyday we walked on the beach and went to the end of it to a little coffee shop and had our morning coffee before coming back to the hotel and enjoying our day at the beach/pool.

there are many pools and I just wish they were all warm. One pool was freezing, the other was medium and the swim up pool(I call it the pee pool) was really really warm.

We spent morning on the beach and afternoon at pool.

I cant believe how the staff are friendly there. I know they are paid to do this but it really make us feel good. When you tip them, they are grateful and it is a pleasure to tip them as they work really really hard.

Overall the RIU hotel in Mazatlan was really perfect for us. My only problems is that loud music playing constantly at the pee pool(swim up bar)

We will probably go back there if not there to another RIU hotel for sure.

Room Tip: it was cool at night because of freak weather. Bring a pair of jeans and a long sleeve so you can at...

Overall - excellent. Very clean and the staff are great. Buffet was outstanding with a lot of variety.
Somewhat disappointed with the a la carte restaurants as they too were buffet style with similar food to the regular buffet. In the Mexican themed restaurant the food was served and a little different form the norm. Rooms were clean and larger than average. Fridge stocked with water, beer and pop. Hard liquor was also provided in dispensers above the fridge Bathrooms were spacious with double sinks. Although at the far north end of Mazatlan public transportation was easily accessible and you were downtown in 30 minutes. Travelled with Sunwing and Signature vacations. The reps were outstanding and very helpful. Pools were great and the ocean was on the on the rough side with 3 and 4 foot waves, Great for boogie boarding. The water sport facilty that provided the boogie boards was not always open on time. Minor inconvience. A ten minute walk north along the beach will take you to a good restaurant. There are also some kisoks with limited shopping so you don't have to go into town.Travelled with friends and enjoyed the vacation. Definately no issues of major concern and would go back again.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean

Mar 15 to 29, 2013 - we got an excellent deal on this hotel and so were more than pleased with what we found. The staff is great, the check in was the best, we asked to be moved a couple of times and there was never any problem (just wanted a different view even though all rooms have an ocean view). The beach is huge and although the ocean is probably not the best for swimming the resort has lots of pools. The food was great, tons of variety - I usually get tired of buffet especially on a two week holiday but not this time. The resort is out of town a ways but that is a good thing much quieter than the Golden Zone and you can take the bus to the Golden Zone for 80 cents or a $10 cab ride. I would definitely go back to this resort.

Room Tip: Try to get the front of the hotel but higher up cause the waves can be noisy.

wife and i just got back from our 3rd stay at the riu in the last 4years.let me just say they did not let us down.this resort is spotless, people cleaning 24 / 7.yes the ocean is very rough for swimming but alot of people in the ocean at about 4pm. the food is good to average, you can always find something tasty to eat. as reported previously alacartes are buffet style however the italian had the best roast beef i have had in resort that i have stayed at.we had friends join us this time and they loved not only the cleanliness of the riu, but also the city itself.you must go to the old town to see the market and cathedral . while there walk to the theater district for a view of gentrified homes and restaurants.it is only a short walk to the cliff divers. the divers will try to charge you 20 usd. dont pay just wait they will jump anyway, then give them 20 pesos lol. as stated the seafood restaurant down the beach is a must. for 2200 pesos you get a lobster dinner, which comes with 2 two pound lobsters rice and veg. and yes happy hour 5 to 7 pm. watched two hockey games at the last drop, just up the road so if going soon you can try that for an evening out .when you arrive in the morning say hi to david ,the security guard at the front door. he will tell you how to get anywhere in mazatlan, and your options. just a couple of minor blips on this trip. they did not have lotions etc. in the bathrooms this stay, not 5 star. they have changed the beer in room from dos eqius to tecate, a down grade? this this resort is one of the finest on the Pacific coast. contrary to some reports it is also very safe.as you are off the resort you will see a strong police and military presence in all areas of the city. they are there to make you more secure.

Room Tip: ask for a higher floor for the sunsets

I'm not quite sure why anyone could give this place anything less than a 5 Star rating? Even with the negative things you will read here, they are minuscule in comparison to all the GOOD of this hotel.

So, what was "GOOD" about this place. Absolutely EVERYTHING. The staff are all wonderful. The Front Desk people, the cleaning staff, the maids, EVERYONE. Two thumbs UP.

I'll only mention 2 negative things here, but don't let that sway you from not visiting this place. One is the so called "a la carte" meals. The Mexican management just doesn't get the idea of "a la carte". All they are is a glorified buffet, although the Asian restaurant is not that bad. Also, the beach area, although beautifully maintained and wonderful to use, swimming is damn near impossible due to the 6-12 foot waves in the ocean. I don't know if the ocean is like that all the time, but it was during our stay. That's OK though. We made lots of new friends and spent the majority of our week at the swim up bar drinking more than our share of booze.

The hotel is pretty isolated, but travel on the local "collectivos" (buses) is cheap and safe to the Golden Zone or even Olde Towne. Down at the end of the beach is a fabulous seafood restaurant which is an absolute must to have at least one meal. I had the coconut shrimp which was excellent. At the end of the hotel road, there is a strip mall with a few shops and restaurants, but I'll mention 2 here that we went to. Take note if you're down during hockey season and want to catch ANY hockey game that is on, then visit The Last Drop. 2 beers for 30 pesos from 3-5pm, with 5 big screens and great food. Right next door is a place owned by Canadians called ROY'S. They have a couple of screens too, but we found the atmosphere in The Last Drop a little better. If you go to ROY'S, tell them you're Canadian and want to use the phone. You can call back to Canada totally FREE.

All in all, I'd go back to this resort in a shake. Weather is usually great (80-85 degrees) and you too won't be disappointed.

Cheers Gin

Went to Riu EB from March 19-26. Overall a decent stay. Some issues, but not a bad experience. Check in was the best I've seen. All inclusive bracelets put on you on the bus before going into the hotel. Packages with room key, towel card etc. available right when you walk in the door. You are directed to separate room and beer and tequila shots are available as you walk in to pick up your key. Got a king bed for a couple of guys at first, but they corrrected it within an hour. The room was very nice with a spectacular view of the ocean. All rooms are ocean front, a great design for a hotel. Front desk service during the whole vacation was excellent. Sunwing rep meeting the next day is the typical sales job: buy your excursions from us the other guys don't have insurance or are unreliable. Food was overall good. They buffet had a good selection and carved something every night except the first night. Don't know what happened there. Breakfast was good. Fresh juices, egg/omelet station, lot's of bacon. Lunch was ok, except for the days they had a bbq and then lunches were delicious. The ala carts were not good. Asian was a third rate oriental buffet. The one true ala cart was very average. Food was bordering on not ok. We didn't bother with the Italian buffet style speciality restaurant. the buffet has everything you need. The bar quality was surprisingly lacking. They try to hide the good liquor brands and give you no name rot gut unless you ask for a brand by name. Then they go into the cupboard under the bar or in the back room and find you something resembling what you asked for. That's not the bar quality you expect in a Riu. The gym advertised as "state of the art" has a number of new cardio machine and five weight machines one of which didn't work. Its a big space with little equipment. The hotel is quite a distance from town. Went to the golden zone once. Not very golden. Quite shabby. Apparently when the cruise ships stopped coming a lot of stores, bars, and restaurants went under. Didn;t go the the malecon, heard it was better. Socializing was not that easy. Lots of Mexican locals who don't speak English. Got to the point that the hotel was full of mexicans who kind of take over the place. Mexican vacationers travel with all infants, children, and grandma's in tow. Its a good hotel if you like lots of kids. However, even if you are taking your own kids they still might be lonely as the mexican kids speak spanish. Not the place for a solo traveller. Wouldn' recommend it if you are out to party as there is nothing to do after the big show. This place would mostly appeal to couples and families. It is very beautiful. The view from the rooms is spectacular. The beach is long. The water was quite rough, fun for fit people who can swim, a litle scary for others. The life guard closed the beach one day because the currents were just too strong to swim. I think there are a total of five pools. Very lush. A little tough to find good shade on the beach. Palm trees provide it and you have to keep moving to stay in the shade. Overall, a good experience for the money paid. I don't know that I would go back, but if you have booked don't be nervous.
