“Great little get away!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012 via mobile

After reading all the reviews, this is an amazing resort. The check in was great, fastest ever. All the wrist bands were put on us on the bus and we were told once we got our keys we could leave our bags ad the bellboys would take them to our room. We opted to take them up ourselves as I wanted to put things in the safe. The food was great, I personally did not care for the a la cartes but it is all personal opinion. And yes the pool and ocean were cool but it is also winter in Mexico same as Canada. I walked around in a bathing suit till 4 everyday then had to add a sweater as the sun was going down. Nothing different then a summer day here. The employees work hard so if you treat them with respect they show it to you. Overall an amazing vacation and I am going back in September.

My friend and I stayed at the Riu from March 20-27. We had an amazing trip, got great tans and gained lots of weight! We are 2 girls from toronto and met many couples/groups from TO, vancouver, edmonton, calgary, yukon and minnesota. great staff, friendly people, and a very very clean resort. Not a party resort though, they dont play music in lobby at night which was nice at times for the quiet atmosphere, but very dead at night at lobby bars etc. Disco was fun, we had a few good nights there. A lot of locals from Mazatlan stay at this resort from friday-sunday, probably more than tourists. There are a lot of wealthy families in mazatlan who come here for the weekends.

$$$: resort takes CAD, USD and peso. we came with CAD and had no problem on the resort or in town. We tipped in pesos (paper money) rather than coin, as CAD coin is very hard to exchange there for the locals.

Weather: sun is up around 830/9, and sets about 6. Very hot. we tanned and burned a bit, but enjoyed soaking up the clear sun. We did not have a single cloud, skies were clear the entire time. We used Accuweather.com updates for our weather forecast and that seemed to be pretty accurate. We came back really brown.

Pools/ocean: yes a bit more chilly than other resorts, but honestly no complaints. Sand was scorching so it was nice for a break. pool temp id say 72ish. Ocean was cool. But playing in the massive waves got you used to it in a matter of minutes. Sand is a light beige, not white. Water is clear but very murky from the sand/waves. Kind of green at times, but nothign like mayan/cancun/veradero waters. Water is very clean, no sea weed or anything. just nice water and sand. very nice!!

Safety: never felt worried at all. the two of us went to the sea food beach restaurant 5 min walk down the beach (about 30$ with tip for both of us, great food, great experience!, filled with tourists from all over mazatlan, so its very safe) and also took a trip into the heart of mazatlan to the golden zone and the mall (pretty expensive stuff compared to toronto prices) called the grand plaza - via open door taxi. I am a runner and had 2 good runs down the beach alone with my ipod (40min appx) and never felt worried once, as well as long walks every day with my girlfriend to work out some of the bloating from the great food. we had Starbucks in town which was fun because we are city girls and cant go a day without our lattes! my friend also had burger king, that was tasty!

Food/drinks: great! we loved the breakfast and had 2 plates a day. Marble cake was awesome and the hash browns. Try the cappucino (middle option on the machine) it tastes exactly like the french vanilla from Tim Hortons!!!! lunch options could have been more plentiful, but it was alsways delicious and we both gained 5+ lbs for sure. We enjoyed mojitos, banana mamas, long island ice teas, and real banana smoothie drinks. Fruit was great, fresh watermelon and mangos were my favourite. We noticed at times the ice cubes had a funny smell/taste, so we would change our drinks often for new ones but it was ok. that was the only complaint. bread was fresh and crispy and amazing!

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean view so don't pay the extra $.

Just back from a week at the Emerald Bay. The housekeeping was very good; the building itself is fairly new so no complaints about the facilities. The food was a three star at best. Six weeks ago I was at a Riu in Puerto Vallarta with much better food, better hours at their bars, and a better selection of alcohol. I have been in 4 different all-inclusives in the past two years and this is the first I have visited that did not serve champagne every day. One morning it was doled out by the glass and that was it. I was disappointed. Perhaps if the hotel had not billed itself as a 5 star I would have been satisfied.
The Mexicans took advantage of weekend specials and filled the hotel. This would not have been a problem except the hotel clearly was not able to accommodate the numbers. The main breakfast buffet restaurant had to close because it was full! Weekend elevators were impossible, but weekdays were fine.
We stayed on the 19th floor and were pleased it was quiet.
We always felt safe in the hotel and on its property.

Room Tip: We paid the extra for the higher floor and were pleased because there were few people and the halls...

I loved this resort. Let me start off with the pos first:

Great service; like all RIU resorts, this one is another great property. The rooms, were clean- always done up. The hotel pools: always clean, and not packed like you would think they would be. All the pools are in good order, a bit cold but then again we went in February and that is a cold time for Mazatlan. The beaches were fantastic, and I was very impressed with the overall beach. This is a long beach, so its not packed. Lots of beach chairs, lots of space.

The food is top notch. I found lots of selection, lots of everything. We tried the restaurants on the resort and found them all quite good. No complaints.- always something to eat. In terms of fitness, the gym is lacking somewhat, but jogging outside was perfect. No real issue there either,

Nightlife is far, we went to GusYGus, and Bora Bora, and Jungle Juice. Some of the best live music, be-aware of GusyGus: it can be an older crowd. We took a cab from the resort to downtown, and it was very cheap.

This was a great vacation, like other RIUS you know what you are getting; and this one does not disappoint. What I would caution on is that its far from any nightlife, its not like the Cancun, or other Mexico RIUS, outside of that, i would recommend this resort. I met some really great people, and had a blast!

Room Tip: They are all good.

The hotel was pleasant; staff was very friendly and accommodating. Free WiFi in the lobby, $15/day in the rooms. The reception only accepted Canadian $ for exchange, 11 pesos/$1. Hotel has 17 floors and is facing the wrong way. The sun rises in the back and doesn't come around to the pool until 10am. The hotel does not have washrooms located close to the beach or pool bar (in which children are not allowed) so there definitely is a lot of peeing in the pool. Once afternoon hits, the pool bar water becomes very murky. The hotel is located pretty much in the city so it has a lot of locals vacationing in it, especially on the weekends. This makes the elevators very crowded and wait times are quite long. This hotel carries only Pepsi products so don't expect Fanta. The great thing is is that they carry both Absolute and Smirnoff vodka and the wine and mojitos are very tasty. Most places that I've been to do not allow you to take out food from the buffet restaurants, but this one does, right up to your room with dishes and all, not a problem. There is no cheddar cheese in this resort, Coconut Icecream and Soft serve is good, Hamburgers are overcooked and bland, and if you really enjoy Mexican cuisine you’ll find a lot of it (breakfast, lunch and supper). They only have 1 buffet restaurant for breakfast & another for lunch. They have Sushi but nothing to rant and rave over. Food was average for Mexico but lacked variety. The rooms are clean, safe is free and a drying rack is located on the balcony.

Won’t go back because it’s freezing. Night time dipped to 12-15 degrees & windy and day time as well only hit the high 20’s. The ocean is rough (good for boogy boarding) & freezing like the Bay of Fundy, the red flag is up at all times. The pools as well are cold. The kids club is located in a shady spot and is catered to ages 3-5, my 7 yr old found it too young (no Teen Club, arcade).

If the hotel was on the east side, would definitely recommend it.

The RIU Emerald is a beautiful hotel with amazing staff, Mike at the lobby bar makes a great chocolate milkshake for the kids, Terese at the pool bar who makes a delicious "dirty monkey" for the adults, Jorge and Edgar at the buffet restaurants who seem to remember everyone. All wonderful people. The rooms are spacious and clean. The pool is a little chilly but doesn't take long to get used to. The pools are very clean and there are plenty of chairs on the beach and around the pools. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. It's away from the Golden Zone at the end of the beach. Quiet and relaxing! Entertainment staff was good, the GREASE show was quite good. All in all no complaints about food, drinks, anything really. It's our first stay at a RIU and would definitely go back.

Just returned from this property in Mazatlan with our family of 5, 3 kids aged 9,11,13. It was absolutely excellent.
-Very clean and comfortable rooms (beds a little firm, but that all I can complain about), and hotel overall, always people cleaning and shining things.
-Food was very good, a nice selection of just about anything you might want. The three restaurants were all good. The favourites were the Mexican and the Asian. Steak house was okay, ribs were great, steak itself not that good.
- Pools were a bit colder than I have experienced in places in the past, but okay. A bit warmer we would have spent more time in them.
- The ocean was great, cool, but lean and did lots of budy surfing and boogie boarding.
- Staff was very helpful and accomodating, with exception of one younger lady that worked the water sports loan area. She was not very accomodating and only wanted the boogie boards to go out for 30 min at a time. The other staff their was great and didn't put a time limit on the boards, not that we followed it anyway.
- Servers and service around the beach, pool, bars, restaurants and buffet was excellent all the time! Of course a tip was greatly appreciated and a little went a long way for future service.
- took a Mexican Lim (open air truck with seating) into Golden Zone and Downtown Old Mazatlan. For four hours for $55.00 Canadian, the driver toured us, stayed with us, waited for us, and brought us back to the hotel safely. A great experience!
- Evening shows were entertaining and fun for the whole family.
- Very quite for most of the trip around the hotel with the exception of the weekend when many local families come in for the weekend. Everyone was great, it just got a lot busier, but definitely not over crowded. Once they left on Monday morning or Sunday night, it felt like the hotel was nearly empty and much quieter.
- Upper management was around often and walking the property and in full view. Security was always around and also walking the property.
- All in all, we had an amazing time, felt very safe and comfortble, no one got sick from the food or anything, and would go back and would recommend this property as one to check out if you have not.
- use the safety deposit box for everything. I heard of one person that apparently had their cell phone taken from their room unfortunately, but we did not experience anything like that and my phone was left out the entire trip, but just be cautious and lock everything up.

Room Tip: I e-mailed the hotel ahead and requested adjoining rooms as we booked two room for 5 of us through a...
