Just returned from a week at this property. Overall we enjoyed our stay here, I will keep this quick and list the good and the bad about this hotel and golf course. I'm not going to name names with the exception of the "golf pro". My wife and I travel to Mexico frequently - 3 to 4 times per year and this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review.
Beautiful location with stunning views and great food.
Decent staff that, for the most part, tried very hard to provide good service considering that the occupancy of this hotel is low.
The one and only a la carte that was open (Antonio's) provided great service and very good quality food.
Hotel was very quiet, no problem finding shade or sun around the pool at anytime of the day.
Weather in this area is pretty much guaranteed hot and clear with very little wind.
Met some great couples to hang out with since the occupancy was so low and we all seemed to arrive on the same plane.
The Not So Good:
This hotel is tired. Serious maintenance needs to be done to polish it up a bit. The rooms are nice but a little out dated and there is a serious tiny ant problem here. Do not leave empty coffee cups or sugar packs in your room for any length of time as they will be swarmed by barely visible fleas or ants or whatever they are.
Found ourselves waiting for water at the restaurants - easy fix would be to direct the staff to keep the water glasses full - it's hot in all of the eating areas and this should be an "automatic" - simple fix. This resort has recently offered all inclusive packages so I understand the growing pains involved with getting used to this for the staff - they do require your room number at every meal and you must sign for it - this is fine as I understand the need for accounting purposes...we did find that we had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to actually get our check to sign off on. Easy fix - bring the bill with the order. We just got up and left a couple times and then would be chased after to sign our bill.
The Golf Course
This is where opportunity is truly lost for this resort. The course itself (27 holes) is spectacular from a scenery point of few - great potential. Where the Golf experience falls down is with the management. Rates are not transparent - expect to pay anywhere from $90. with the "golf package" (and your own clubs) to $200. or more without the golf package and having to rent clubs. The course requires you to take a caddy - this is a $35 to $40. touch and is completely unwarranted for a course that is so ridiculously UNINHABITED by golfers! Places like TPC Scottsdale and Coure d'Alene can get away with this because they are busy and provide a truly immaculate golf experience - this place...not so much. This was not a golf vacation for me as my wife doesn't really golf much - my intent was to play once just to see it and be able to say that I'd played it.
Upon checking out the clubhouse to find out about rates, I was greeted somewhat aggressively by the pro "Rodolfo". After some discussion of cost, I learned that Tuesdays are "half price" days - he said that if I played with him on Wednesday, he would give me the Tuesday rate and I could just pay him instead of taking a caddy - I thought, ok sounds good. He mentioned that he could rent me some "not so good" left handed rentals and I fold him that I would like "good rentals" since I am a decent golfer. We arranged to play Wednesday morning - I expected to pay $70. for the green fee and cart, plus $50. for the rentals and $40. to Rodolfo - not a great half price deal, but what the hell right? Wednesday comes and I meet Rodolfo at the course - I pay for my rentals in the club house ($53.USD) and we head to the range where Rodolfo asks for the rest of the money - the $70 became $86. due to "taxes"...I chuckled and paid it - whatever, I'm pretty easygoing and was looking forward to playing. Then my rentals came out...yikes. The irons were ok - callaway x-14's (circa the year 2000). The woods were a joke - Callaway steel heads - 2 three woods...LOL...the driver - Dunlop something - looked to be about the size of a modern day 5 wood - hit it twice on the range and only used the 3 woods on the course. Obviously, this was where I had to question Rodolfo's intelligence - sticking me with these crap rentals and charging me full bubble - Again, I went with the flow because my expectations for playing well were pretty low - my priority was to see the course. All in all, I was happy with my play in spite of the crappy equipment and we played fast - about 3 hours and I only shot a few more than my handicap. What ticked me off at the end was when Rodolfo informed me that I should give him an "additional tip" - I raised an eyebrow but said nothing, thinking all along, "yeah, right buddy". I had been hosed enough. I will not return EVER to play this golf course strictly due to the poor management and undefined rates for playing this track. You can't even find a website for this place, how it received a "certificate of excellence" for 2013 is beyond me. There is no one playing this course, it would surprise me if they have 4 groups a day playing this 27 hole Gem (because the course itself is very nice). Proper marketing and appropriate pricing would go a long way to make this a destination for golfers - as it stands, it is not worth the money or the feel of shopping in a Mexican market with the need to "negotiate" a deal - second rate all the way - Don't buy the golf package, you will still be stuck paying $90. to cover your cart and caddy.
Again, overall we enjoyed our holiday, but we chalk this one up to "been there done that", won't be returning.
