I am Twenty years old and I have stayed at quite a few resorts in Dominican, Cuba, Mexico and so on, so I have a good idea what to expect. I went with eleven other people ranging from 18-60, all Canadian. We payed $850.00 (incl. tax) each, leaving from Toronto, Ontario airport in Feburary. We waited till about a week before departure to book it. Two days before departure the price dropped 100$ dollars. We booked through itravel2000.com.
THE TRIP TO THE RESORT ( 3* )
The airport was very small, you have to walk on tarmac into the airport. Line was average, and the bus ride there was about 25 minutes and you could buy Corona beer for $2.00USD each on the bus. On arrival, you will want to rush to be first in line at check-in desk because the line takes awhile, we were 4th in line and it took about 15 minutes, so if your 30th in line your probably looking at about an hour or more. After check-in a truck comes and picks up you and your luggage and takes you to your room.
THE BEDROOMS (2.5* - 3*)
Two types of bedrooms are available- a two story room with three beds and two bathrooms and a one story room with one bed and one bathroom. If you have an "a" at the end of your room number you have a one story, if its just a number, you have a two story. Like many other reviews have said, the rooms are very dated and could use some maintenance. Some of our friends had mold in there bathroom, and all rooms are very musty when you first get in (turn on A/C right when you get in). Safes are free to use, you just have to ask for it when you check-in. Beds are kind of hard, but I didn't have any problems with it, one couple got locked on their patio because the patio doors auto lock - so be careful! haha. Maids don't carry a lot of cleaning supplies because there are a lot of stairs, so I imagine the cleaning of the rooms isn't perfect, but not noticeably dirty. Towels arrive late in the day, because they are delivered separately from when the maids clean. You might find yourself without face towels a couple days of the week, but we always got plenty of regular towels. We brought raid, but did not use it because there were no bugs in the room, but one thing I do suggest bringing is air freshener or scented candle to take off the edge of the musty smell.
THE FOOD (3*)
First off, we had a late flight into the resort so we got in and settled at about 10.00pm. Little did we know that the main supper buffet closes at 10:30, and there is no food available after that time, so be sure to eat before then. In the morning there are two buffets to choose from on either side of the main pool, we always went to the bigger buffet so I can say much about the other one. At the buffet its your regular food - omelets, pancakes, french toast, fruits, and some spicy Mexican sauces. If you want bacon, the lady making omelets has some underneath her counter, just ask. Breakfast is usually VERY busy, and your wait time for omelets is usually 20 Min's or more.
There are 4 different places to eat lunch- The beach and three places around the main pool. The beach has ice cream, and a little bit different food then the rest.
There are three different places to eat dinner- The two around the main pool and the a la carte called Alfredo's which is Italian food. We ate at Alfredo's 4 times because the food their is delicious, you can book a day in advance at the main activities tower and there is no limit on how many times you can eat there. They have a Mexican style dinner on the Saturday, which mostly consists of authentic burritos. In general, dinner at the buffet is your average food and nothing special.
There is no snack bar or any kinds of food to eat after 10:30, so be sure to fill up.
THE BARS (4.5*)
There are about 6 bars (believe me, no shortage). This is where they get very good reviews in my opinion. No there is not a pool bar anywhere in the resort, but I didn't really miss it. They have one at the beach, plus one in the restaurant at the beach. One in the solarium which is a private pool for adults over 18 only. One at the main pool, and two of the three lunch buffets have their own full bar. The main buffet does not have a full bar, but you can get beer and wine.
The solarium in my opinion has the best service in the whole resort, a young fellow named "Fransisco" is constantly walking around to everyone around the pool and taking orders for drinks - TALK ABOUT SERVICE!. The other really good bar service is at the lunch buffet by the main pool - again, they are constantly asking you and remember what drink you like and would bring it without asking. That type of service is all over the resort, and is obviously a very strong point of the resort. The family disco also has its own full bar and opens at about 10:30 - again VERY good service. The water slides had a bar, but it has no alcohol, just pops.
NIGHT LIFE (4*)
There is PLENTY of night life at this resort starting at 10:00pm, that is when the main show starts and usually lasts about 30mins-45 mins. After that many people make there way to the family disco (the tropical hut) and gets there table. You might want to leave the show early to get a seat at the tropical hut because it gets REALLY busy. They play Spanish music from about 10:30-11:15 and lots of locals love that stuff and dance their hearts out. At 11:15 they usually have an activity like limbo, beer drinking contests, or arm wrestling. That stuff is over by 12:00 then they play some more Spanish music and then around 12:30-1:00am is when they start playing good English music and they keep it up until is closes at 2:00am. It is 95% locals there, and they dance to everything so it mights for an upbeat night life.
CLUB MOOREA IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THE RESORT, which is contrary to what they advertise but we tried to get in there (its right beside the tropical hut) and they want $15.00USD each, so we never even bothered going in there, the tropical hut was fun enough.
THE BEACH (4*)
The beach is about a 6 minute walk from the main buffet, and you have to walk across a bridge, specifically for the people at club maeva. The resort has about 25 umbrellas set up with chairs for club maeva members only, but they get grabbed pretty quick in the morning, so you have to get there early. Several locals have chairs and umbrellas to on either side of the reserved area, but you have to pay. Many people walk around trying to sell you stuff all day, but they arnt to pushy, usually a simple "no thanks" will send them off. The sand is AWSOME, very nice white sand and it gets VERY hot. The water is equally as awesome and has BIG waves, great for boogie boarding and body boarding. The waves at some points of the day are actually almost too big, but are tones of fun to dive into and ride. But during those times of the day, its best to keep the children close to shore.
You can walk either way on the beach and you will find a market to buy little trinkets and clothes, be sure to bargain with them because the prices are to high to start with.
Overall the walk to the beach isn't bad because once your at the beach its not like you want to go back and forth a lot, they have everything you need there - beer, food and a chair. We usually just took all we needed for the day and stayed there from about 10am-2pm and them went to the solarium to relax.
WATERSLIDES
They are pretty fun, they have two fast ones but only one was working and it was not busy at all. I don't know why, I thought it would be full of kids, but you could go over and over with out waiting at all. The secret to going fast on the longer slides is to put all your weight on your heels and shoulders, do not put weight on your butt or you will stop in the middle of the slide. Only one of the slides kind of hurts your back when going down, but the rest are pain free.
QUICK OVERVIEW OF EVERYTHING
-The resort is 95% locals, being Mexican. So if you have a problem with that then I would not suggest going here.
-If you looking for a fun time with a lot of friends, this is the place for you because there's tones of stuff to do and the night life is fun for all. If you are looking for a super clean resort with really good food and everything done perfectly, this isn't the place for you.
-This resort has TONES of kids activities and for that matter, a lot of kids. So that is definitely a bonus for people with kids. But even if you don't have kids, you can avoid them most of the day because they have adult areas.
-The tennis courts are in EXELLENT condition, looks like they were just redone. They provide you with a racket (which are really nice!) and as many balls as you want. If you play tennis, id suggest you come prepared with shoes.
-They do spray for cockroaches, but we never had any in our room.
-If you hate walking, this isn't the resort for you. There is a lot of walking to be done because the resort is on a mountain side, and the resort itself is very big.
-You can look at the resort on GOOGLE EARTH, and get an idea of the layout of the area.
OVERALL I GIVE IT A 3.5*
