“First Timers In Awe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

Just returned from 3 weeks at the Grand Mayan Acapulco and we still find this resort outstanding. From the friendly, attentive staff, to the manicured landscape, to the endless beach, Grand Mayan excels.
On this trip, we had some guests who were first timers to Acapulco and admittedly were a bit apprehensive considering all they had heard about Acapulco safety. Needless to say, they were completely at ease and in awe, especally after an airport pick up and city tour with Roberto Alarcon. They felt perfectly safe and enjoyed their tour, including a Cliff Divers show. Our guests were impressed with Roberto’s vast knowledge of local culture and customs.

We are long time visitors to Grand Mayan Acapulco and continued to be impressed with all aspects of the Resort. The servers around the pool and beach are friendly and helpful. The activity staff gets guests involved in everything from Spanish lessons, to dancing, to Blackjack, to water spinning.
If you are a tennis player, Grand Mayan has the best clay courts we have played on. These courts are shaded and there were open drills (free) on Tuesday and Thursday. A great way to meet other players.

Also suggest droping into Mondo (lower level) for a nitecap and a friendly round of pool.

If you get the chance to go to Acapulco and the Grand Mayan, don’t pass it up-you will enjoy every day.

Returned from a week at The Grand Mayan in Acapulco. The hotel is awesome and the staff was helpful in every way. Close drive from the airport and check in was a breeze, possibly because we stayed just after the holiday season ended. Got a room with a mountain view on the top floor, very nice. We were told that the ocean front rooms are reserved for members. I read in another review that you could get upgraded to an ocean view if you agreed to sit through the 90 minute timeshare presentation but that was not the case with us, even after telling them it would be the ONLY way we would agree to that. The accommodations are very nice, it was everything we could have hoped for. The beds were a bit hard, but that's a personal preference. Brought a sharp knife with us based on a prior review and it was indeed much needed. Half the week we ate at the restaurants onsite which were really good, the other half of the week we cooked for ourselves having hit the local grocery midweek.

Took the first couple of days to relax on the beach which was really nice. There is a strong undercurrent the deeper you go so caution should be exercised. It's shallow for quite a distance so there was plenty of room to enjoy the ocean without worrying about the undercurrent. On the beach there were some "entrepreneurs" selling their wares but we never felt uncomfortable or obligated. The pool was nice but common. I was under the impression that there was a lazy river onsite but it turns out it's across the street at their sister property The Mayan Palace. The swim up bar is across the street too. It's a short shuttle ride and close enough to walk (we walked) but it would have been more convenient if it was onsite as indicated by the many maps I reviewed. Having also read that there was 7 restaurants, there turned out to be 2 onsite best I could tell. I'm sure they included the ones across the street. There was a very impressive structure with floor to ceiling windows on the beach which would have been the PERFECT spot for a restaurant with awesome sunset views, but turns out it was being completely wasted (as it relates to the hotel's guests anyway) by their sales team giving timeshare presentations. Unforgiveable in my opinion given the lack of alternate eateries with a full ocean view.

After a few days we wanted to do some offsite activities including a visit to downtown Acapulco. We've never been much for group tours but they were offered to us upon check in. After talking with Freddy, the transportation manager, we found Dexter, a tour guide, and the relaxing vacation suddenly became an adventure! Being from Acapulco, Dexter was able to show my wife and I around the city (and beyond) in a way that we could not have imagined on our own. Having read some articles about the safety concerns in and around Acapulco, I can honestly say that we never felt unsafe with Dexter. He knew exactly where he was going, the sites to see, activities to do and the many people he introduced us to knew him.

All in all a great week and we'd certainly return to Acapulco in the future. Can't say enough about Dexter, he put our vacation over the top!

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor.

I have stayed here a number of times in last 8 or so years, and have loved the resort. Not so this year. I have been here now for 2 weeks. The beauty and liveliness of the resort has dissipated. 2 of the 3 pools are now gone, leaving only areas of dirt and construction debris in their place. Only the center pool remains, the lazy river and waterfall pools removed and awaiting some new construction to begin. The view from the building containing the one bedroom units is of the dirt pile. Remember the awesome view upon entering the resort of the reflecting pool and ocean? Now some building is being constructed between the reflecting pool and ocean. We are told that the first story of this building will remain open to the ocean view. The Bakal restaurant and The Lobby bar are closed. The Performing Arts Center is closed. The service staff is as dedicated and wonderful as they have always been. The Mayan Palace and the lazy river have been moved to an off beach location, a shuttle ride away from the grand mayan. Perhaps in a few years the Grand Mayan area of this resort will again be as beautiful and lively as it once was.

We just returned from a week in Acapulco staying with friends in their condo at the Grand Mayan. The hotel is beautiful and the staff is very helpful. We stayed in a condo with a pool and beach view. January is a great time to go as the ocean and pools are nice and warm.
We had to report on our experience with our wonderful driver and guide, Angel Flores. Our friends have traveled with Angel for the past 7 years and we have been with them for two of those years. Angel meets us at the airport, takes us to the Grand Mayan and then food shopping! We took a trip to Taxco and had a super day shopping and eating Mexican food.

Room Tip: Corner suites on the ocean side have wonderful views and are quiet!

We were first little nervous about the city, but when we arrived to acapulco airport, ricardo picked us to hotel and said what is the situation, where to go where not... We had read from here about this guy ricardo and at the hotel we asked he can show us places and stuff and we actualle spend two days with ricardo. He was great storyteller and without him many thing would be left unseen. About the hotel it was very safe (guardians at the port, lot of very nice bellboys and reception guys were so helpful), clean and luxurious for us. Best vacation what we have ever been. For sure we will go back again. The beach by the hotel is just perfect if you like little bigger wawes.

Our stay at the Grand Mayan in Acapulco was fabulous. We were a little hesitant about going to Mexico because of all the negative publicity. Our most wonderful tour guide Benjamin Alarcon put all those fears to rest. He and his brother,Roberto, picked our party of 6 up at the airport. They packed up the car and brought us to the grocery store and then on to the Grand Mayan. Our accommodations there were fine except for the very musty smell which permeated throughout all of the units. Benjamin recommended a restaurant for the following night. It exceeded all expectations...the view..the food...the whole experience. We also booked 2 other day/night tours with him and once again they proved beyond anything we could have hoped for. Between the perfect weather, the perfect driver and a great place to stay we will certainly return to Acapulco. Here is the info to make your vacation the best ever....benjamin_alarcon@yahoo.con or from the USA:011 521 744 181 74 24....they won't disappoint!

Room Tip: Rooms on the golf course side are cooler.

To have great time and see Acapulco while being safe and comfortable you must use Baldo Gomez as a driver/ guide. He is totally professional, courteous and dependable. He does not advertise it, but he is one of the few drivers that is also a certified tour guide. His contact info is Cell 74-41-60-1604, e-mail is baldo-work@hotmail.com
Our evening maid service left a lot to be desired. There was no turndown service on Tuesday night, no big deal. On Thursday night, after returning from dinner about 10:30 PM, we found both doors to our rooms with ‘Do not Disturb’ signs in the key slots. Upon entering the room, there were lights left on inside and outside, the trash was not picked up nor were the beds made, luckily nothing was missing. After a discussion with the night manager and the head of security, it was determined the only enter into our room was the evening maid. She lied to security and said she violated procedure and entered the room even though the ‘Do not Disturb’ signs were in place. What really happened was that she put the signs on the doors so that no one could check her work. After apologies from the Front desk manager that this would not happen again, we did not get any turndown service on Friday night. At check out the front desk manager admitted that they had serious communication issues.
There is a lot of construction at the resort, while it is not an issue in itself, more than half the pools have been removed including the Kid’s Aqua park, the pool bar, the in-water lounges and the lazy river all of which are still pictured in the Grand Mayan website, never mind the construction at the end of the infinity pool at check-in.

Room Tip: Even number room face the Ocean.
