“Best vacation ever with our granddaughters (ages 3 and 7)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

We exchanged (RCI) a timeshare week for a week at the Grand Mayan Acapulco. There were six of us: Grandpa, Grandma, daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters (ages 3 and 7). We had a 2-bedroom condo, with a living room and kitchen (refrigerator, stove top, & microwave - no oven). The room exceeded all of our expectations. Our room was convenient to the water park, pool, and beach. A previous review said that the water park was an additional cost. However, upon checking in, one clerk said it was extra; another said it was included. For us, it was included, which was great. Everyday we went to the water park first thing in the morning and for a few hours in the afternoon. We avoided the mid-day sun.

The pool is huge and was great for the girls. They used the pool before the water park opened (10 am) in the morning.

The hotel is adjacent to a nice sandy beach. The younger grandaughter (3) ran on the beach in and out of the waves, built sand castles, and looked for shells and birds. Our son-in-law rented boogie boards a few times for him and our older granddaughter (7).

One evening the hotel had a movie on the beach - a new and fun experience for all of us. (But, they charged for the popcorn.)

Benjamin Alarcon is a driver that we would highly recommend. He picked us up at the airport, took us to the hotel, waited while we checked in, then took us to WalMart to stock up and back. One day he took us for a day of sightseeing at the cliff divers, and a tour of Acapulco. Since he has young children of his own, he knew just how to pace the day so the girls didn't get bored, and the adults saw what they wanted as well. Another afternoon / evening he took us to a tour of the huge lagoon where the girls and adults had a good time seeing a variety of birds and other animals. Afterwards, he took us to a great seafood restaurant on the beach. He has a large suburban which fit all six of us comfortably. All-in-all having a personal driver was more convenient (and probably more economical) than renting a car.

Even though I rated everything about this experience as 5 stars, there were some negatives:
Wi-fi in the room was over the top expensive
We went for the "90-minute" sales pitch. Never again. It was extremely high pressure.

Bottom line: Our granddaughters said this was the best vacation ever. Mom and dad said it was the best ever. Grandpa and Grandma hit a home run!

My parents and I stayed at the Grand Mayan in November 2010. We enjoyed a wonderful week at the resort. The accommodations are beautiful and the resort is very relaxing. We took several trips into Acapulco and always felt safe. We used Roberto Alarcon as our driver and he was one of the highlights of the trip!

Spotless, beach is wonderful - quiet. We were there in Feb/March for three weeks. Beautiful weather - warm. Downside is that there are no restaurants close off site. You need to take a taxi everywhere off site. We highly recommend our guide - Benjamin
Alarcon. He was knowledgeable, friendly, spoke excellent English and quite reasonable.
He was always prompt - even helped us with our grocery shopping. He knew the best places for everything - his email is benjamin_alarcon@yahoo.com. I suggest you email from home and have him pick you up at the airport. By the way, crime is not a problem in Alcapolco - much media hype.

Room Tip: Request an ocean view room - not guaranteed

This was our first time at the Grand Mayan Acapulco, and our first time visiting Acapulco. We really enjoyed ourselves and had a hard time leaving!

Hotel: The hotel was beautiful. The entrance is breathtaking and the landscaping/views of the ocean throughout the resort were striking.

Rooms: We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite and had all the amenities one could need. Our balcony had a plunge pool which was nice after a long day at the beach. The rooms were very clean, and while we did not have an ocean view, the city view was gorgeous as well. We did ask several times to move to an ocean view if possible, and the staff was very nice about putting us on a waiting list, but we never did get our ocean view room.

Pools: The pool area is right near the beach, so you have view of the ocean. Unfortunately, while we were there, the lazy river/water park was being worked on. But on our last day it opened up and we got a chance to experience it. It was a lot of fun, and the river was relaxing. Wish we had had more time to enjoy it. Otherwise, the pools were clean and they offered free water activities such as aerobics and bikes.

Beach: The beach area was gorgeous. The palapas and tents were always ready to go and cleaned off every morning. We had no problem getting one and noticed that the day didn't really get going until around 11 am. * on a side note, there were vendors on the beach, not a part of the hotel, that we enjoyed. We rode ATVs, rented a boogie board and surf board, and even did some shopping while laying on the beach. They are constantly around, but once you say no once, they don't bother you anymore.

Activities: The Grand Mayan organized many activities each day for the guests. We played BINGO on several occasions (my husband won twice!), and had a movie night on the beach. It was an experience neither of us had had and we really enjoyed it!

Food: There are not a lot of restaurant choices at the Grand Mayan, but we still enjoyed the meals and found the prices to be ok considering it was a resort. We ate at their italian restaurant which is near the Mayan Palace, and you'll need to take the hotel shuttle over to. It was very good and we even went twice because we enjoyed it so much! The other times, we ate at Bakal restaurant which was also very good.

It was an incredible trip and we found Acapulco to be gorgeous! The weather was fantastic every day and we're looking forward to returning.

This was our third stay at the Grand Mayan, our first in Acapulco. The rooms are immaculate with very friendly and professional housekeeping staff. All staff is friendly and pleasant with the exception of the time share recruiters......those people are just plane rude. Avoid them!
The grounds and pools are immaculate and beautiful. The restaurants are all good but somewhat overpriced. You can do a few meals in your rooms to save money.
To make our trip very easy we arranged a driver his name is Roberto Alercon. He is very knowledgeable and will accommodate you in any way he can. His prices are fair. He made us feel very safe in the city, however, we NEVER felt unsafe at any time during our trip. We are rather sedate people and aren't looking for "action". It was a very relaxing trip. I would suggest people not get frightened by the media. It was a lovely trip and I plan on returning to visit Taxco very soon. Reach Roberto Alarcon at robertoalrey@yahoo.com.mx

The pools, buildings and grounds are immaculate. The amount of work that is ongoing to keep everything clean is amazing.

There no longer is a charge to use the lazy river and it does have a nice current, the water park is geared to the under 8 set so our 12 year old wasn't to impressed.

Make sure you ask the concierge for a activity guide listing, they don't offer it but it is really useful since there are a lot of activities put on by the staff. The staff are friendly and work really really hard.

We ate in the resort and outside the resort, the resort is marginally more expensive but the atmosphere and convenience cannot be compared since the resort was beautiful.

We also ate off the restaurant/shack that is on the beach, freaking amazing ceviche and shrimps.

WARNING: (this is the "but" part) do not book tours from the guys on the beach. They are lying misleading and won't show up for two days following your tour because I was watching for them. They tell you about a great buffet on the boat, snorkelling in two locations and all you can drink beer, pop, water and tequila. It wasn't particularly cheap, it was $70 u.s. per person.
The buffet was a styrofoam container handed to you as you get on the boat, a disgusting white bread mystery meat thing with cold french fries, there was some fruit in the box.
The snorkelling consisted of stopping in a bay that had a small rock in it on the way out and stopping in the same bay on the way back to go swimming at a really decrepit beach bar.
We ran out of beer after three hours, pop was gone after that and the tequila was some weird Mescale drink.
The funny part: They came around asking for tips for the crew, that didn't go far.

In due respect to the other vendors on the beach, they were great. The horse riding, ATV rentals, board rentals were very helpful and definitely negotiable.

The people hawking miscellaneous items are annoying but they do work hard and would go away easily enough when you said no.

We did book another tour, the tour guide was Benjamin Alarcon. He was timely, professional, courteous, responsive and got us around to a lot of areas that we would never have found on our own. His tour was definitely worth it.

We had an amazing stay at the Grand Mayan. They went above and beyond to make our stay pleasurable. Very kid friendly. Our son is 2 and he loved every minute of it. Amazing beaches also. Food was not as good as i expected but didnt take away from a aweseome vacation. Dont forget to hire Roberto Alacron as your driver. He was amazing. Made us feel very safe at all times.
