“Another lovely stay at Quinta Karla”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Tucked away from the bustle of the city, Pie de la Cuesta is an ideal vacation spot for those who wish to relax and enjoy the beach. You will have no problem doing this at Quinta Karla- a comfortable lodging located right on the beach. I have had the pleasure of staying here twice and will always go back. Karla and her family who operate the place are ever accomodating and helpful, the rooms are comfortable and very nicely decorated, the prices are economical, and the place is just beautiful overall. Karla speaks English very well and will take excellent care of you and your companions.

We ended up there based on tripadvisor reviews. It costs double so much as advertised. Around 500 pesos the night. There was no functional swimmingpool at the moment. The beds were so old that you could feel the stone hard surface beneath the mattress. Not every photo is from the place! We moved out the same day.

We come to P de la C about once a month from Mexico City and we always stay here for 2 reasons:

1. The price - it's one of the cheapest places to stay in Pie de la cuesta

2. the restaurant. It is hands down THE BEST in town. great food, incedible prices, wonderful staff. So really, we come once a month for the beach and this restaurant.

I knew the risk I took when decided to check it for myself, after reading the previous review here in TA. How could it be so bad with such higher rating? The is so ridiculously low too. Well, first of all, the location is away from the conventional touristic route from the coast busy area. There is almost no infrastructure nearby. What's available are few restaurants of local mexican food which are open 11am-7pm. To be there, you really want rest, rest and... rest. For anything else, move. The beach in the back of the hotel is clean and in pristine condition though. Some nice hammocks are available, so you can nap nicely in the shade at the sand. The downside is the room assigned to me, soooo basic and in need of lots of improvements. But noticing the area, the standards, and the people, it's an option for low budget mexican vacationeers, and apparently the hotel does not seem to have a problem in filling the rooms. And if not filled, the operational cost is almost zero. Which makes me believe that the hotel owner does not revert part of the revenue in improving it, as most of the guests may not be demanding it at all. The second part of the downside is the restaurant. The prices are high for the local standards and there is nothing special in the food. Well, it was 10 tolls rountrip from Mexico city in endless traffic jams so I cannot say it was a budget trip just because of the hotel low price, but an empty beach is priceless.

First, I would like to qualify this review with the fact that I did not stay at the property for reasons that I will list below. However, I did visit and get a look for myself. On many of the websites they list their rooms for $23 which is about 287 Mexican pesos. When I arrived it was I was told that the room would be 475 pesos. When I asked them about the internet price they said they didn't know anything about that. Also, I had a look at a few rooms, the pool and the grounds and I am shocked that they have such a high rating on Trip Advisor. Sounds like someone has been stacking the deck a bit. The rooms were grungy looking and the property did not look well kept. I am used to traveling very low budget including camping in my tent and do not have high expectations. The pool looked ok and was full of water but a little murky. However people were in the pool and seemed to be enjoying themselves. The rooms looked crowded and I would not have described them as "clean." While Pie de la Cuesta is a great beach and can be a little pricier than staying in town I think that you can do better if you look around. I did. Most places are pretty close together and a short walk up the beach and I found something for a little more money but significantly better! One last thing, the restaurant in front of Quinta Karla run by Manolo was excellent! However, they are not connected. I will write a separate review on that.

Room Tip: Don't!

Pie de la Cuesta is absolutely beautiful. The surroundings are breathtaking and the accommodation is amazing value for money!
Karla is so welcoming and friendly, it makes the stay all the more enjoyable. She also speaks brilliant English so there is no need to worry about difficulty in communication.
The restaurant Is lovely, with an amazing selection of ice creams and a very special barbecued red snapper.
The price is also unbelievable, leaving you with spare change for the piña coladas.
I shall definitely return, without a shadow of a doubt.
Awesome!!

Arranged in a motel-like fashion, the rooms are dark and dingy and decorated with leftover wallpaper from the 70's. There are no lamps to read by, just overhead lights. The very small pool is constantly about half full. The restaurant is EXTREMELY overpriced and the quality of the food is poor. There is no breakfast.
