We stayed at the Acapulco Princess for a week during the Ontario school break. We have two boys 7 and 12. This review will be of particular interest to Canadians booking through Sunwing or Sunquest as part of the AAI package.
We booked through Sunwing and flew out of Montreal. Flight was late as was the return flight which proved to be the worst part of the trip. Transportation to and from the Hotel was smooth and is only a 10 minute drive(first drop off and last pick-up by the chartered bus)
The most remarkable part of the vacation was the relative lack of
guests at the Hotel. Although our flight had well over a hundred people just 12 were staying at the Princess or Marques. During the first five days of our stay the Hotel was running at around 33% occupancy. A large conference started during the last two days and although the Hotel was then at capacity, there was no drop in service.
We joked about our "private resort" as we would often be less than 2 dozen people around the pool or dining at any of the restaurants. Although the Hotel did close certain restaurants due to the lack of guests, this is no way diminished the quality of the offerings or service.
Upon check-in we were given wristbands indicating the Almost All-Inclusive (AAI) package. At first we were concerned about the restrictions attached to the AAI program. However, there were no issues whatsover. The AAI included all buffet meals at the Chula Vista (Breakfast and Lunch) and Dinner at the Veranda. At the Veranda for dinner we had the choice of the daily menu or buffet. We always choose the buffet as was the choice for most guests. The variety and quality was excellent. We have been to AI resorts in the Dominican and the Acapulco Princess was by far superior.
Standard drinks were included in the AAI package at any Bar or restaurant. The poolside service was very nice and we used it often. Many other Canadian guests had similar questions concerning the AAI package and its restrictions. The Hotel staff also seemed to not know what was in or out. However, in the end it appears that everything is included with the exception of beach service, food at the beachclub, fancy drinks e.g. with a pineapple, and orders a la carte from the Menus.
Other guests from our flight golfed every day and stated that the courses were nice, not crowded and were included as part of the package with the exception of a 20.00 USD charge for the cart. Rounds were played in three hours.
This was not a party resort. By 10:00 at night the lobby is quiet and the last bar open would have less than 20 people. There was a night club but we did not go and I'm not sure if it was even open. They had a kids club which offered a daily program but more geared to younger ones. There was an arcade room that our two boys used that cost 50 cents a play.
Rooms were fairly large, clean bathrooms, large balcony and marble everywhere. We did not see one bug or mosquito the entire week.
We used the main pool for most of the week but our boys would alternate between the salt water pool with the water slide and the main pool with the waterfall. Both pools have deep parts over the heads of most adults so be carefull if you have young children or weak swimmers.
The beach was excellent. Large, public and great for walking. The vendors wait for you at the entrance from the Hotel property but a polite no gracious worked every time. We rented boogie boards for our boys for 5 USD an hour and they had a blast. The waves are quite strong as is the undertow. Children must be watched in the water due to these factors. I personally swallowed enough salt to put away the shaker for a year.
There is a market on the beach close to the Hotel that sells the usual t shirts, silver, crafts. We found it and the vendors very nice and not too pushy. This is the market on the airport side of the Hotel as you face it from the beach.
You do have to sign for every drink and meal which can become annoying but you tend to get used to it. Although we were AAI the prices seemd high for those paying the going rates. For example, breakfast for four was 72 USD, lunch was 92 USD, and dinner was 140 USD.
Gratuities were included with the package but we tipped the maid daily and waiters at every service. We probaly tipped around 12-15 USD per day in total. The Hotel staff are not well paid but very polite and we did not feel pressure to tip.
All in all a great week and for the service and resort we felt excellent value for what we paid.
