To celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, my husband and I decided upon Casa Farolito, a listing on Bed and Breakfast.com, so that we could be in Baja, Mexico. We have devoted many wonderful years of travel within Mexico and notably Baja, from day trips, rustic camping, fishing, and hotels, and it was important for us to return there for our milestone anniversary. But we wanted a venue that would be private, beautiful, close to us in San Diego, and not a regular busy hotel, so we took a chance on this unknown.
Wow. Serendipity strikes.
Casa Farolito is an exquisite bed and breakfast located on a dazzling stretch of pristine beach with 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. With additional panoramic views of the Coronado Islands and spectacular close viewing of dolphins, pelicans, and other sea life, it is evident from the moment you enter that your stay will be unforgettable.
Within the gated community home of Lorraine and Peter Pontell, the owners, their love of beautiful Mexican artifacts and graphic art abounds. Lorraine as a former interior decorator and Peter, as an artwork framer, have creatively adorned every aspect of their home and property to enhance it in striking ways. We reserved their oceanfront suite which is the only accommodation that has its own view, deck, and private spa. The bedroom and especially the bathroom are replete with luxurious amenities such as double sinks, two-person shower, robes, slippers, etc., which enhance the total experience of escape from busy lives. The suite with fireplace and deck are just above the shoreline so your stay is filled with the lulling crashing sounds of the ocean, day and night, glorious sounds which can even be heard while sitting in the spa with its jets bubbling.
We entered the suite upon arrival to find artificial rose petals arranged to form the number “40” on the bed. Peter later served margaritas on their upper oceanfront deck as we visited together while dolphins frolicked and the next morning, the actual day of our anniversary, a bottle of chilled champagne, two flute glasses, and a card appeared in our room while we were at breakfast, amazingly thoughtful touches that charmed our hearts.
Since Lorraine and Peter normally prefer to accommodate only one set of guests at a time, we were the only ones there. The magic of eating our delicious breakfasts alone served on their upper oceanfront deck was unparalleled, as was the opportunity to enjoy the lounges, palapa umbrella, and other home amenities, in addition to what our own suite provided. Our desire to escape to share our milestone anniversary alone together could not have intersected with a more perfect paradise than Casa Farolito.
In addition to their splendid accommodations, both Lorraine and Peter are exceptionally helpful with suggestions and information for restaurants, etc. Their gracious hospitality and warmth were just the natural extensions of the total vacation package that they have created with the needs of their guests paramount at all times. By the end of our stay, we felt as if we had known them as friends for much longer than three days and, as friends do, we will be back the same time next year from now on, with many more visits in between.
We were pampered beyond our highest expectations within the secure beauty of their magnificent retreat and thanks to them, our fortieth celebration reigns as the pinnacle of our years together. For us, serendipity struck with Casa Farolito, and when serendipity strikes, you follow.
