“A spectacular bargain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2011

We had been to La Paz more than 10 years ago for scuba, and came back for sun and quiet. Costa Baja was great. A bit out of town [we rented a car at Fox, great service] but quite self contained. The included breakfast was spectacular- very interesting buffet Mexican dishes and omelets to order. Steinbecks has very good food, nice presentation, good service, and never much of a wait. Overall the staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The rooms are very nice- lots of counter space- but would recommend getting one away from the lobby which can be a bit noisy. Good lighting in the rooms for reading in bed. The onsite beach is ok for a walk but not swimming- we went to El Tecolate twice [about 15 mnutes by car] and had great grilled octopus there [a Thanksgiving tradition for us]. When we go back will again rent a car [valet parking was free] so that we can come and go as we please. Ate at one of the marina village restaurants [Azul] which was ok.

Room Tip: Get away from the lobby as it is noise. Odd number rooms on 2nd floor have LaPaz view.

First, I would like to thank you for selecting La Paz as your vacation destination. I can only imagine the excitement of returning to a place you have not visited for the past 10 years.

It is great to hear you were not disappointed and that you truly enjoyed your stay, especially our breakfast buffet and Steinbeck's food.

Thank you once again, and we look forward to have you back as our guest very soon.

Kind regards,

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days. Beautiful grounds, great sunsets, very relaxed and peaceful. The resort is part of a gated community that includes the resort itself, the marina, 3 restaurants (international, Japanese and Italian - all very good) a couple of tour vendors and a mini-mart. The restaurants at the resort are pricey and, other than the three restaurants mentioned above there is no other place within walking distance. The city of La Paz is a ten minute cab ride away - about $10 one way (hotel also provides a shuttle service). If you're looking for a relaxing place and don't mind spending $ on eating out, this may be the place for you. Beware all restaurants close at 11pm. If you want night life and vibrant atmosphere, look elsewhere. A special shout out to Israel and Xavier who were excellent!

At check out, with our luggage, we inquired about the free shuttle into La Paz with both the front desk and the concierge. We were given a schedule and directions to board the shuttle. The shuttle driver loaded our luggage and at no time indicated that this would be a problem. The driver then drove around the property to a location that was unknown to my wife and myself. He called several security personnel and they all stood around for several minutes repeatedly peering in through the windows of the shuttle van. During this time we had no idea what was going on. After about 10 minutes, the security manager pulled my wife and I from the van and explained to us that the free shuttle could not drive us to La Paz with our luggage. There was plenty of room in the van for the bags as the van had a large back cargo area. We were left to stand in an unknown parking lot and wait for a taxi to arrive.

Any of several Costa Baja employees could have informed us of this policy, not the least of which was the driver who loaded our luggage himself. This is not the kind of treatment that one would expect after paying the kind of rates that Costa Baja charges.

Aside from this incident, the overall level of service at the front desk and in the restaurants is generally poor. A lot of people standing around doing nothing and still it takes an act of god to get a drink from the bar.

The resort is quite a long way from town and the shuttle mentioned above is on a two hour schedule, it should be much more frequent, so bring lots of cash for taxi rides (~100 pesos one way) unless you want to spend all of your time in La Paz waiting for drinks with a superb view of the Pemex refinery.

Room Tip: Choose a good room at another hotel!

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

I would like to sincerely apologize for the inconveniences you and your wife experienced with the shuttle service. We failed to inform you that Costa Baja does not offer airport shuttle services. We do provide a shuttle service to town (downtown area) but we are not allowed to transport guests with luggage since this conflicts with the local transportation services/authorities.

I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

General Manager

My husband and I just got home from La Paz. We loved our stay at the Costa Baja Resort and Spa. We stayed there for just one night in January 2011 and I knew we had to go back. The resort is very tastefully decorated, and we were impressed immediately by the giant manta ray gracing the walls of the lobby. The mosaic of the pool made it visually interesting, and the water was warm and inviting. Our room was very nice, and most importantly, the bed was super comfy. The view from the balcony was breath taking, and I will miss seeing it last thing each night and first thing every morning, The staff were very helpful, and everyone seemed eager to be of service. We do not speak Spanish (yet!), but communication was not a problem. The food was fabulous, and I felt royally spoiled dining on chicken tacos poolside! We also recommend Fun Baja for any diving or snorkeling activities. They were super friendly, very professional, and well equipped and knowledgeable. We thought this would be our last trip to Mexico, time to try someplace else. But we will be back to La Paz. We will do our diving with Fun Baja and stay at Costa Baja. Thanks to everyone for an amazing holiday, and a special thank you to all the new friends we made!

Room Tip: I recommend the ocean view but I am a diver and it is all about the water for me!! Room 421 was gre...

My sincere thank you for your generous comments. I am delighted to know that what you had planned to be the last trip to Mexico has become your new home away from home!

It is very rewarding for us to know we were able to provide a relaxing and memorable stay. You can certainly come and practice your Spanish, enjoy chicken tacos by the pool as well as our comfy beds anytime. A big thank you from all of us here at Costa Baja Resort and Spa.

Muchas gracias!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience at CostaBaja Resort & Spa. Our check-in was quick and all the staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was spotless and the housekeeping staff add little unique flourishes while cleaning (fold sheets in the shape of fans, etc), and we got turn down service which included two Mexican chocolates (delicious and free!). The breakfast at the Mosaic restaurant was scrumptious, and dinner at Steinbeck's was also absolutely delicious (their flan is unbelievable!, and the view to the marina is gorgeous); we also tried the restaurant Azul Marino by the marina, and that was very good also. The prices are a little steep for food, especially compared to the value you get for the hotel room but the food is worth it. We used their free shuttle to the malecon and the shopping mall, which turned out to be very convenient and easy (downtown La Paz is not within walking distance, though, so you'd have to plan outings based on the shuttle schedule, if you dont hav a car). Their pool was great, and never had too many people, so you could enjoy the swim any time of day. The property is spotless and they have people cleaning all day long. I have great memories of my stay at CostaBaja and would definitely return again.

Room Tip: Pay extra to upgrade to pool view (vs. golf), its much better.

CostaBaja resort was a wonderful experience. The beds and linens were exceptional. We just stayed one night - but could see coming back in future trips to Mexico, The Beach Club cafe and pools were wonderful, had nice shallow areas and shaded area perfect for the toddler traveling with us.
the only less than perfect thing was that the mini fridge in the room was ineffective. it was stylishly concealed in a cabinet, but that trapped the heat from the motor. I predict that all the mini fridges will burn out unless they create a vent. We had to keep the toddler's food chilled via ice bucket - not a big deal for just one night. The rooms are modern and stylish and eco friendly - a dazzling glass shower in the middle of the room. staff very friendly. swimming in the sea of cortez was a delight - war water, gentle lapping waves.

Room Tip: we had a golf course view room, didn't want to pay extra for the ocean view as we were just stay...
