This may not be the vacation for you if you want to be pampered at pool side, have room service and experience all of the amenities a large resort has to offer. Las Gaviotas has it's own niche, completely unlike other resorts. The resort is small and there is no restaurant on location. However, the locals are friendly, there are many restaurants, grocery stores and shops in short walking distance. The resort staff was very friendly and helpful and certainly made us feel welcome--especially Elgardo.
Not exactly easy to get there. Some fly into Cabo and then take the bus or drive up to LaPaz (about 2 hours). We chose to fly through Mexico City then directly into LaPaz. A longer layover than we care for, but it was worth it for us. The LaPaz airport is small, it's best to make transfer arrangements with the resort prior to arriving or rent a car. Taxi fare to the resort is expensive. We enjoyed having a rental car--nice beaches are 20-25 mins from resort, we went several times.
During the week is best time to visit the beaches. Tecolate Beach has full facilities and absolutely beautiful (Francisco is a great waiter at the restaurant on left side). Snorkling trip to Sea Lion Island was awesome! (all day). Wet suit is optional $10 (US) additional--we were glad we made the investment, the island is in the middle of the Sea of Cortez and the water was be a bit cool. We visited in May. No gimmick, we swam and played with Sea Lions! We saw many different types of protected species as well. We stopped at another secluded island for a relaxing lunch, more snorkling and kayaking before heading back. Dolphins found our boat and started playing in the waves, jumping in and out of the water--a perfect photo op and wonderful experience. We had people come along just for the ride and they enjoyed seeing the natural beauty and the animals in their own habitat (Baja Tours, Lorenzo--good guy). My son and I went ATV riding with LaPaz Adventure (Hector--another good guy), 2-3 hours riding on beaches, dunes, etc.) Morning ride was great.
At first, we were a bit worried about the resort and it's location, but once we got out and eperienced the beauty of the area and discovered what LaPaz had to offer, we really began to enjoy ourselves. Our 16 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son were not completely bored---so that was a good vacation barometer for us. Overall we're glad we experienced LaPaz before the word gets out about its sheer beauty and the masses of resorts and people begin to arrive.

“Great urban vacation”

Great casual resort for an urban vacation. One block up from the busy Mercado - the primary promenade around the bay. Easy walking access to a variety of restaurants and bars and shops.

Room came with all the basics needed for a relaxing week, including a full-size fridge, affordable water for drinking and making ice cubes, and a nice pool for that afternoon siesta time. The decor is minimal, but the beds and chairs were comfortable, and the outside deck was a great place to lounge in the shade.

The resort is on a busy street just one block up from a commercial area, and the truck noise can get loud in the morning. Try for a room off the first floor if you want a better view and separation from the road noise.

The staff are all fluent in English, and offer a lot of helpful advice on places to go and how to get around. Be sure to attend the Saturday morning presentation - its not a timeshare hustle, but rather a nice intro to local businesses and a good way to connect with local tours.

“Disappointing”

I am currently staying at La Gaviotas, and was therefore interested to see what others had to say as I sit here by the pool enjoying the sunshine.

I own a timeshare, which is how I got to stay here, but mine is not located in Mexico, so I did not know exactly how this one would compare to the ones I've stayed in previously. While the property I own is considered 4-5 star, I'm almost always surprised by what I find when I arrive at a destination.

I've owned my timeshare for 10 years, and have stayed in 8 Mexican properties all over the country. So I feel that I am judging las Gaviotas by a certain standard. While it's true that the place is spotless, it is very basic, and quite disappointing.

Compared to others I've stayed in in the Mayan Riviera, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta, Las Gaviotas falls very short. It lacks the amenities, luxury, and sheer comfort of other properties I've stayed in using the same timeshare as a trade in.

Lighting in the kitchen consists of a single lightbulb on the ceiling, and the bathroom fixtures make it impossible to shave or put on makeup with any accuracy.

The living room furniture is not comfortable, and there is only one TV for a two-bedroom unit that sleeps 6. The walls are rough concrete, as if they are awaiting a final coat of something.

Internet access is unreliable in most rooms.

The worst part about the resort (a true misnomer if I ever heard one) is that, while the view from my room overlooks the water, the noise from the constant traffic makes it impossible to sleep with the window open (and closed!) or indeed sit outside and read. So much for a room with an ocean view!

The beach outside the hotel is only for looking as the sand is heavily covered in thick algae. The closest decent beach -- even according to the management at Las Gaviotas -- is 20 minutes away by car.

It is true that the people who run the hotel are lovely; however, they do not mitigate the dreary atmosphere in the rooms. This place needs a good refurbishing to make me recommend it.

This little timeshare property in laid back La Paz is a real sleeper. The complex is not new, nor glitzy, but the place is immaculately cared for and the people could not be nicer. 16 units only, we got to it through an exchange with RCI, and spent a week there. Large unit, great king bed, plus other sleeping for up to 8. Pool, no jacuzzi, free WiFi in the lobby, no phones in the rooms. No oven, but two very nice BBQs around the pool. And we too went to the welcome talk, with coffee pastries, etc.
We bought the cut rate boat trip around Isla Espiritu Santo island ($45 for one) at the beach (Tecolote) and while that was a good trip, I went back and did the kayak one day trip with Mar y Adventuras for $95. Much better as the guide was fluent in English and we had a frolicking great time swimming with the sea lions, plus about 1 hour of kayaking.
La Paz is low key, though a typical Baja town. Have fun in the markets, ...I used a bike the resort has to tool around town. Not as cheap as one might expect , but you can have breakfast for $3 from a tiny street market, especially if you can puzzle out the Spanish.
Staff at Los Gaviotas is ALL fluent in English, and very very eager to please. AND there is some English language TV.
