This may not be the vacation for you if you want to be pampered at pool side, have room service and experience all of the amenities a large resort has to offer. Las Gaviotas has it's own niche, completely unlike other resorts. The resort is small and there is no restaurant on location. However, the locals are friendly, there are many restaurants, grocery stores and shops in short walking distance. The resort staff was very friendly and helpful and certainly made us feel welcome--especially Elgardo.
Not exactly easy to get there. Some fly into Cabo and then take the bus or drive up to LaPaz (about 2 hours). We chose to fly through Mexico City then directly into LaPaz. A longer layover than we care for, but it was worth it for us. The LaPaz airport is small, it's best to make transfer arrangements with the resort prior to arriving or rent a car. Taxi fare to the resort is expensive. We enjoyed having a rental car--nice beaches are 20-25 mins from resort, we went several times.
During the week is best time to visit the beaches. Tecolate Beach has full facilities and absolutely beautiful (Francisco is a great waiter at the restaurant on left side). Snorkling trip to Sea Lion Island was awesome! (all day). Wet suit is optional $10 (US) additional--we were glad we made the investment, the island is in the middle of the Sea of Cortez and the water was be a bit cool. We visited in May. No gimmick, we swam and played with Sea Lions! We saw many different types of protected species as well. We stopped at another secluded island for a relaxing lunch, more snorkling and kayaking before heading back. Dolphins found our boat and started playing in the waves, jumping in and out of the water--a perfect photo op and wonderful experience. We had people come along just for the ride and they enjoyed seeing the natural beauty and the animals in their own habitat (Baja Tours, Lorenzo--good guy). My son and I went ATV riding with LaPaz Adventure (Hector--another good guy), 2-3 hours riding on beaches, dunes, etc.) Morning ride was great.
At first, we were a bit worried about the resort and it's location, but once we got out and eperienced the beauty of the area and discovered what LaPaz had to offer, we really began to enjoy ourselves. Our 16 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son were not completely bored---so that was a good vacation barometer for us. Overall we're glad we experienced LaPaz before the word gets out about its sheer beauty and the masses of resorts and people begin to arrive.
