“The best french food in town”

It's an old restaurant, don't expect bright new shiny decor, the staff is friendly, educated, and the PASTRIES ARE TO DIE FOR!!!

“Still the best place for dinner in Downtown Ensenada”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

The tourist strip (Ave. Lopez Mateos) in Ensenada is not the sort of place one would think of for a quiet, romantic dinner. Most of the restaurants in this neighborhood cater to tourists, especially travelers from the cruise ships that come into town a couple of days each week, offering "2-for-1 margaritas and $1 tacos". El Rey Sol is different, although it looks from the outside like many of the other dining establishments in town. The outside dining area looks the same as other cafes, but most patrons opt for a bottle of wine to enjoy with an assortment of appetizers rather than chips and blended drinks. The ambiance inside is very European with dark wood, subtle lighting and tasteful art reproductions. Much more authentic than other Ensenada restaurants that try to look like a Hacienda from Spain but come off with a garish and faux feel.

For dinner, my wife and I selected a simple Caesar Salad prepared at table side, along with a simple appetizer; an assortment of cheeses with fresh baked bread. We knew our server (Jesus) from previous visits and were extremely pleased with the attention and "panache" in preparation and service. The wine list is very complete and reasonable, especially if one of the excellent local wines is selected. Our dinner, along with a bottle of wine (L.A. Cetto Cabernet), shared pastry for desert, and after dinner coffee came to less than $50. We were not looking for a full dinner on this visit, but on a previous visit last year ordered escargot and "surf and turf", and were just as happy.

Our experience has been limited to two visits but each dining experience included excellent service, great food, and good value. Highly recommended!

“Days gone by food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

This is one of my favorite restaurants. It is a French establishment that has been around for decades. A perfect place for a date or special evening out. The ambiance is dark wood, and upolstered furinshings. The service is excellent and the food delicious and fresh. Enjoy the classics of table side ceasar salad, the chateaubriand for two and the escargo. The wine selection is satisfying as well. Don't forget to order the Mexican coffee at the end of your meal. Dress accordingly. They won't turn you away but you will feel much more comfortable if you avoid the tourist outfit of t-shirt and shorts and the environment/restaurant warrents it.
