We called it our redneck camping after seeing how packed our trailer and trucks were. We found El Cardonal on the web and decided to give it a try. Here in Baja, it's a tradition of local families to go out camping on easter weekend. El Cardonal is located on the east cape, just 40 minutes away from Los Barriles following the mountain road. You can also drive the coastal dirt road, but you need to have a good all terrain vehicle. We were towing trailers and some of use were driving compact cars, so we went the mountain road. You have to drive carefully, but you will enjoy some of the most amazing views of the baja mountains. At el Cardonal (no way of missing the spot once you are in punta pescadero town) you will find some bungalows (which we didn't use) but best of all, shaded areas for camping, with a power outlet on every tree. Bathrooms are cleaned several times a day, they have hot water and a sink to wash your dishes. If you are not into camping, don't even try this. Tarilers are also welcomed here.
We decided to bring an ATV with us, and that was the smartest idea. Many families bring theirs and they come handy for going to the store to get beer or ice, for bringing your stuff down to the beach, or for some great evening rides to Los Barriles following the coast road between Pescadero and los Barriles, which offers some fantastic views of the sea of Cortez. It was also fun to see all these families camping around with the same spirit of getting away from our daily routines. No blackberrys, no laptops, no checks to sign.
If you have spirit for camping and really want to get away from it all, this is a great spot in the esat cape. We are already planning our 2010 escape..
