My girlfriend and I had heard a few people mention the Hilltop as a nice romantic place to go, so we decided to head there on our last night in Thailand.
Our hotel called to book a table and the restaurant came to pick us up almost on time.
There's no denying it, the venue is spectacular: nice open air seating, covered areas, snazzy bar, and of course the amazing view over Ao Nang and the bay. On the way in you pass a nice display of their fresh seafood ready to grill.
It was a bit cloudy when we went, but on clear evenings it must be really amazing.
We arrived shortly after 6pm and to begin with the staff were very attentive and keen to get our orders in. I guess because they wanted to be sure of space for a second sitting. We began with a couple of cocktails which were quite good. To start we shared the 'Duck The Hilltop Style' which was delicious. Then I had a grilled Sea Bass (from the outdoor bbq), and my girlfriend had a Massaman Curry with chicken and rice. The fish was wonderful, the curry was more of a soup, and perhaps not quite what we expected from the description. The dishes came out separately.
The band that played were ok, but the music was a bit loud and distracting. We weren't even that close to them so I felt a bit sorry for the people sitting in front of them.
Despite having a smart uniform a number of the staff had done everything possible to look as scruffy as possible, particularly the younger lads. Some of them were even wearing baseball caps, which totally spoiled the image the restaurant was going for. It was difficult to get anyone's attention after a while, which was annoying, especially when we wanted to pay.
The toilets were nice and modern, situated down some steps and across a lawn, but they were a bit messy.
The bill was 2-3 times more than we paid for similar meals in the town. For the location you certainly pay a premium. Nonetheless, the food was fine, and compared what you would pay in Europe it's still cheap. I didn't really feel I was getting value for money.
If you're on a budget then I wouldn't bother. If you've only got a few days and you're not too concerned about paying over the odds, then have a look. The free transfers softens the blow a bit.
