“Popular, very good value, excellent food”

Not a fancy restaurant. Excellent seafood. Big rotation. We had very good time. Far away from Ao Nang, on the beach north of Ao Nang.

“We've never been disappointed here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

My wife and I eat here every time we go to Ao Nang. It is our favorite restaurant in the area offering fresh seafood as well as regular Thai dishes.

Also the price is right. We spend about 60% of what we do in Phuket for the same quantity of food as we get in "Krua Thara (after tsunami)".

“Hyped up and Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013 via mobile

Having read awesome reviews of Krua Thara, my wife and I headed off to the restaurant from the town at about 6.30 pm to avoid the peak hours. The tuk tuk cost 80 baht, and we arrived at 6.45 pm to find the restaurant packed with locals in the majority and probably 3-5 tables of tourists.

The place I would term as busy and humid, typical of a Thai eatery. There was a solo perfomer, who plays the guitar and sings popular numbers. We were lucky to find a table for 2 as the customers behind us had to queue and didn't get to sit for another 20 minutes.

The waiter was prompt to provide us with menus, and was able to provide a recommendation. Food arrived 30 minutes later which was acceptable to us.

We love seafood, and were looking forward to trying our dish. We were disappointed to find that our lobster, tiger prawns and white snapper were overcooked and the soft shell crab was salty. Probably they were cooking for so many people that quality control is more difficult.

Having been to other seafood restaurants in South East Asia, we believe the seafood experience at Krua Thara is average. We were charged 2000 baht for it. Whether that pricing is reasonable or not is subjective - as such I'll leave my thoughts out of this.

“Our Favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Thank you Tripadvisor community for letting us know about Krua Thara. We would not have discovered it otherwise.

One of our least favorite things about travelling is walking past countless hawkers trying to get you into their restaurant. The main road in Ao Nang is filled with them. And a hundred indistinguishable restaurants all looking like tourist traps.

The reviews of Krua Thara sounded like what we were looking for. It was a bit far from town, so we asked our hotel if their shuttle would take us there. It is located across from a beautiful, uncrowded beach which is part of a national park.

The sun was going down, so we decided to walk along the beach before going to dinner. Everywhere we looked was beautiful. The breeze felt wonderful. We could walk out to karst formations. The long boats apparently spend the night here, and we watched one after the other float by in the reflection of the setting sun.

And then dinner. Just what we hoped. A menu with page after page of choices. Fresh food all around, reasonable prices, with as many Thais eating there as tourists. We re-lived this experience 3 of our 5 nights in Ao Nang. Each time we'd order 6 or 7 different dishes to try new things. All were good, most of them great. Our plates were always empty when we left, and by the time a tuk-tuk drove us back to town, we felt like we had a fantastic evening.

“Mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

We had a mixed experience at this restaurant. The service was slow and almost no one would speak any english. I had a doubt about a dish and it took a long time for someone to appear. When the girl finally came, she was really upset and aggressive with my question. And the question was which was the difference between two dishes with same name, but one costing twice the other? Anyway, I can't say service was good. Thai food is good, nothing special. Fish dishes are big, so if you're not hungry you can share even the sliced fish. Fish and chips was greasy and my husband couldn't eat it. The place is expensive and in my opinion overrated. But maybe we weren't lucky.
