If this were in the South of France it would be called a Boutique Hotel – In New Zealand it’s a Backpackers! Shayne and Tania have taken my favourite place in New Zealand and made it their home. Being able to share this amazing location with them, if only for a short time, has been a real pleasure.
On return from our recent stay I received the following email from Shayne & Tania “Look forward to having you stay here again in the future – you can tell J..... the fish are here waiting for him”
And that’s one the reasons while we’ll be back!

Stay here! You won't regret it :-) The location is idyllic, the hosts welcoming and friendly, and the hostel charming and homey. The accommodation is suitable for anyone, including families. It's not your typical hostel, so even if you're not hostel types you'll feel quite at home here. You wake in the morning to the sound of birds singing and step out the door to the beautiful bay of Anakiwa. Right on the doorstep of this hostel is the beginning of the Queen Charlotte track, which is breathtaking beyond words. Thanks Shayne and Tanya for a lovely few days away from the ratrace.

Room Tip: We stayed in the self contained apartment. It had it's own kitchen and bathroom facilities. It...

We were backpacking the South Island for a few weeks last year and stayed here in May 2012 at the end of the season. This didn't really strike me as a backpackers as it was so nice! We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves, so effectively had a self catering holiday let at backpacker rates! I'm sure it would have been lovely even with other people though as it's not got so many rooms that it would be crowded. The place was really charming, with the feel of a colonial villa rather than a faceless hostel. The owners lived in the other half of the house so weren't far if we needed them for anything. Really handy location at the end of the Queen Charlotte Track (literally) - we got a lift up the road and then walked back to the hostel one day. It was also good for a quick nighttime wander along to see the glow-worms. Just loved this place; having stayed at a fair few backpackers and hostels this was a really nice one - though you would stay here for a quiet peaceful experience rather than for a party atmosphere.

We were recommend this home by the owners of another BBH lodge and we were really pleased that they lead us to this cosy , friendly and very professionally run backpacker hostel . Shayne and Tanya were very easy going and able to offer different activity options with no fuss at all and treated us as we were all best mates.
Perfectly located at the start of the track and great area for biking and kyaking or the hammocks under the trees for lazing and grazing.
We could have stayed a lot longer and will certainly return for longer on our return to this area; well done guys - you should be very proud of your little "paradise".
Good luck on your bike ride for charity.
Terry and Rosemarie

Room Tip: We had the " old verandah " room with own ensuite and little private balcony ; great room

This is the most wonderful place, more of hotel than a backpackers hostel. The surroundings are breathtaking and, being at the end of the road, so peaceful.
We received a really warm welcome from Tanya and were pleased that we were up graded from a double bedroom to the self contained annexe. This was very well equipped, spotless and comfortable. Shayne and Tanya are both really engaging and made us feel like long lost friends and that nothing was too much trouble for them. On their advice we walked up the track to see the glowworms then down to the jetty to catch the phosphorescence.
Our only regret was that we were unable to book for the two nights we wanted. It is justifiably popular and I imagine that you need to book way in advance if you have specific dates you want.
I hope that we may make it back to this charming place one day.

This place was such a great find; it is right next to the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track and the views from the jetty are unbelievable. It is such a homely, relaxing place to stay, with hammocks, free tea/coffee, a barbecue and a really cute dog! If you go onto the jetty at night the stars are awesome. The free kayak hire was also one of the best things as it is a fun way to see the sounds. The owners were so so friendly and helpful with everything- I stayed five days and could easily have stayed five weeks!!!!

I stayed one night at this wonderful place, and didn't want to leave. It is so clean, well appointed rooms, comfy beds, and has a great location next to the Queen Charlotte Sounds Track, beside a beautiful bay. Small and homely. But most of all Tanya and Shayne run this place wonderfully and offer such a warm welcome and service above and beyond. It was so appreciated, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure you have everything you need, and are a great source of information on the area. I totally recommend this place if you want a relaxing and comfortable stay in a beautiful part of NZ. It is the best place I have stayed in, in NZ and one of the best in the world. If I can I would love to come back.
