Arriving just after 12.30 we approached the bar in this lovely old inn, no-one else at the bar. 'Hello' say i to the girl behind the bar - a grudging hello in response and then she turned away .... 5 minutes later another member of staff noticed us standing there, discussing where else we might go to given this remarkably poor reception, and served us some drinks. OK the girl was making (very slowly) a latte for another customer but she could/should have said 'be with you in a minute' or something or indeed called her colleague over to help but no ....
The rest of the experience was ok but not much more, which is a great pity because it is a lovely pub and convenient for anyone travelling on the A14. The decor is pleasing - though why they think we want to watch daytime TV quizes on a large plasma TV i don't know.
My husband's burger looked generous - the onion ring i stole was crispy and light - and he was satisfied. My fish and chips would have been lovely had they bothered to drain the oil off properly - and serving it skin side up meant that the oil dripped to the other side, making the batter on the flesh side soggy. Oh and those were crushed peas not mushy - fine by me but some are more particular!
And if you have any difficulty at all in reading small print, take your glasses with you - the print on the menu and wine list is so small that they should issue magnifying glasses with them! I made some comment along the lines of 'you'd think they'd know that not many customers will be able to read this' to my husband and the chap at the next table said 'I couldn't agree more'
We'll probably go back but only because it is convenient - i hope that we'll see improved service next time!
